REFLECTING ON 42 YEARS OF BOTH PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL PARTNERSHIP!

Hi everyone. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Georgette Braadt, Dr. Braadt’s better half ... I mean wife . This past June 25, we celebrated 40 years of marriage. We’re both in our very early 70s. I never paid attention to my age. Last time I noticed I was 50 and now, here we are, Septuagenarians , people between 70 & 79 years old. AND we’ve been partners in expanding our Chiropractic practice, Cedar Crest Chiropractic, over this same period of time. Whew! Like many of you, we’ve experienced the good, bad and the ugly barriers that life throws at you. We are the glass is half full vs. half empty people. We’re aware that we’ve been very fortunate to have each other to navigate life in addition to experiencing the help of family members and dear friends. Not everyone has this support and we give thanks continuously. I’m the 8th child in a family of nine girls and one boy, born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in New Jersey. Dr. Braadt is the 1st prince I mean child, in a family of three boys and three girls growing up in Williamsport, PA. As you may know, he’s a third generation

Chiropractor, extremely smart with a calm, caring demeanor and passionate about helping you, his patients. I’ve given myself the title of benevolent dictator . We find the combination is perfect. I’m also very fortunate to have been under his care all these years; lucky me! Through our partnership, we’ve developed “scar tissue” that has made us stronger and we’ve become more aware that everyone has their wins and challenges too. Our understanding and compassion for others has grown and we’ve learned that helping others is vital in helping to create a sane planet, person by person. We come from the perspective that something, even if it’s just a little, can be done about “it,” whatever it may be. We opened Cedar Crest Chiropractic in Allentown, PA, in June 1981, 42 years ago last month. We introduced our services to the Lehigh Valley community the traditional way at the time with an ad in the Yellow Pages phone directory, ads in the Morning Call newspaper, participating in local business trade shows and providing Wellness Workshops for service groups like the Rotary Club, the City of Allentown, police and teacher associations, parent groups, etc. Our focus was on sharing the benefits of family Chiropractic care while teaching daily healthy lifestyle habits in order to minimize future health risks. If you don’t feel good, your dreams are shattered. If you haven’t already received our newsletter titled “Braadt Family Reaches Milestone ... 100 Years of Restoring Health without Drugs or Surgery,” pick up your copy at our front desk. As Dr. Braadt wrote: “I am forever thankful to my grandparents and father for passing on the torch of Chiropractic as a safe, effective health care treatment without the risks of drugs and surgery. ” Many people come into our office in mystery about why they have pain. Our mission begins with identifying the cause of a person’s pain to determine if it is due to a subluxation, a bone out of place pinching on a nerve . If it is not in our area of expertise, Dr. Braadt

will refer them to another trusted healthcare provider. But many of the thousands of patients who stepped into our office, including you, had subluxations causing various degrees of pain and undue hardships that were finally addressed. I’ve watched my husband grow into an amazing competent doctor of Chiropractic. After a long week of helping hundreds of patients, he often shares your wins with me and how he’s helped to improve your lives for the better, living pain free so you can chase your dreams, big and small! I can see that he knows his work with you makes a difference. Pain relief is his first step, then correction and then maintenance. We learned to educate you on incorporating healthy, daily lifestyle habits to have more energy while minimizing future health risks. “Controlling the controllables” is what we named it. Many of you listened and confronted what you needed to change and, inch by inch, started eating healthier, moving your body more, finding ways to minimize the negativity and stress in your lives, squeezing in a few more hours of sleep, helping others along the way and learning to accept help when offered. We’re very proud of your success; keep up the good work! This past Father’s Day our 32-year-old daughter, Michelle, expressed how much she loves her dad and all that he does for her. She appreciated the way she was raised, which included healthy lifestyle

habits. Habits which she observes we actually practice ourselves. She recently saw that some of her friends were not as fortunate and, as young adults, are just now starting to address their body issues. If you have or are around children, do your best to set good examples for them . Of course they’ll experiment along the way, like most of us have, but in the end, they’ll remember the positive examples we as adults set for them.

The gift of Michelle on Father’s Day!

You are an integral part of our 42-year-old journey. We truly acknowledge your willingness to trust us with your health and for sharing your success with others. On behalf of our incredible staff: Ann, Annie and Alex, whose contribution to our practice is immeasurable, we thank each and every one of you for traveling this Chiropractic health journey with us! As always, we’re here to help as needed.

HOW SUGAR HARMS YOUR BODY

THE SOLUTION TO AVOID DAMAGE Many factors affect your metabolism (the conversion process of food into energy), but sugar is the most harmful. During my certification in clinical nutrition, we tested sugar’s effects. I was shocked at how toxic even a single grain can be! foods, your health and weight control are compromised. So-called “healthy” grains, like whole-wheat breads and cereals, stimulate insulin and block fat burning. Artificial

sweeteners, including aspartame, saccharin, and MSG, cause increased sodium and fluid retention. To digest sugar, potassium (a mineral) in your cells increases fluid retention, making you feel swollen, bloated, and thirsty. The Solutions Fat is a neutral food when it comes to secreting insulin, and it helps you feel full longer. Increase your consumption of healthy fats with avocado, raw unsalted seeds, and nuts (macadamias, pecans, Brazils), Kerrygold butter, organic coconut oil, hormone-free hamburger, fatty fish like salmon, uncured bacon (no nitrates), aged cheese, and organic eggs. Eat lots of leafy green vegetables like spinach, romaine lettuce, field greens, and cruciferous vegetables (plants from the cabbage family) like kale, Swiss chard, collard greens, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and radishes. These veggies provide lots of needed nutrients

All aspects of your health — especially how efficiently you burn fat — are enhanced by the absence of sugar. Cut out sugar and those foods that quickly become sugar, like refined carbs (bread, pasta, cereal, fruit drinks, etc.), and you’ll automatically trigger hormones that burn fat and accelerate your metabolism. Sugar triggers insulin, a fat-producing and fat-storing hormone that blocks fat from being burned as fuel. No fat is burned in the presence of insulin. As your insulin level rises, resistance occurs in your cells (insulin resistance), which advances to prediabetes and eventually Type 2 diabetes. As many as 70% of Americans are prediabetic, and at younger ages than ever.

and fiber, and they replenish your potassium, which stops cravings. Potassium-rich foods also help lower the effects of insulin to minimize fat storage. Include high-potassium foods like avocado, broccoli, mushrooms, salmon, beets, beet tops, and kale. If you use sweeteners, use the herb stevia (no maltodextrin), a 100% non-GMO sweetener called erythritol (NOW is a good brand), or non- GMO xylitol (extracted from birch wood). These three sugar alcohols do not stimulate insulin. These lifestyle changes will increase your energy, reduce your weight, and help minimize future health problems so you can continue to chase your dreams!

Most processed foods contain hidden sugar, too. Unless your diet consists of whole

While summer is a favorite season for many, it’s also a time when people start slacking in their sustainability efforts. They start using more air conditioning or try other environmentally unfriendly methods. While there are certainly some days when we need the A/C, there are many more we can survive without it. In addition to turning off the air conditioner, there are other things we can do regularly to ensure a sustainable summer. Here are a few practices to incorporate into your life this summer that will be less damaging to the environment than the alternatives. Control your home temperature and lighting. We all know how refreshing it can feel to walk into an air- conditioned home after a hot summer day, but air conditioners use a lot of energy. Instead of relying on the A/C, utilize your fans more often or open your windows after the sun goes down. Don’t leave your air conditioner on if you’re leaving the house for more than a few hours. Also, keep in mind that summer brings more sunlight, which means we can open the curtains and let the sunshine in instead of turning on a few lights. Get your produce from farmers’ markets. Farmers markets offer a great selection of local produce and other foods. If you’ve never been or don’t go regularly, you should make a habit of going as often as you can. Not only are you supporting local businesses and farmers, but you’re also helping the environment since you’re buying from vendors that don’t have to travel far to sell their products. Avoid using disposable products. Summer is the best time for picnics, and many will try to use Styrofoam cups and plastic utensils for easy cleanup. However, these items are incredibly harmful to the environment! Rather than buying single-use items, bring Tupperware or other reusable containers, and be sure to clean up after yourself. FIND THE PERFECT BEACH RENTAL Discover Your Ideal Seaside Retreat

One of the most important decisions anyone will make regarding their vacation is where they stay. This is especially true for summer vacations at the beach. Everyone has a different idea of their ideal vacation, and where you stay can make or break the trip. Here are a few things to consider before booking a beach rental for your vacation. Size Matters How many people are coming on your trip? Is it just you and your significant other, or are children coming? You will want to pick a rental to fit your family’s needs. If your traveling party is small, a condo or apartment overlooking the beach will likely work. If your family is large or you’re worried about the kids being too loud, consider a single-family beach house instead. Location, Location, Location You probably already know what beach to visit, but choosing a specific unit can be challenging. Is

a rental with a grand view of the beach and the ocean worth the cost, or is one without quite the view (but less expensive) still acceptable? You’ll also need to examine the surrounding area to ensure it has everything you need. If you don’t want to drive much once you settle in, choose a rental within walking distance of the beach, shops, and restaurants. The Extras You should consider a couple of other things when booking a beach rental. If you plan to bring your pets, ensure the rental you book is pet-friendly. It’s also worth investigating if the beach itself is dog- friendly, as bringing your furry friend to the beach can make the vacation even more enjoyable. Many rentals also provide beach toys, body boards, and more so you don’t have to spend money buying or renting them at shops. Read through the rental description, and don’t hesitate to ask the owner any questions.
