Funeral continued stick-god in the fire, he couldn’t pull it out without burning him self. He loved his own hide more than his god, and so it turned to ashes, and he wailed, “God is dead.” A few others have thought the same thing. God spoke through the Psalmist, “ Thou thoughtest I was altogether like you.” Some have thought that. Some men have said, “ If I were God I’d do things this way.” But God didn’t do things that way. They said, “God must be dead.” Some good men have wondered about God. Daniel had a hard time explaining to himself why his prayer wasn’t answered. The early church probably pondered this idea when the men of God went to jail. Thomas doubted that the Lord was living, but he received ample proof and be lieved what he should have be lieved without the proof. If God is dead, you would think you’d read it in the stars, but there isn’t any crepe fluttering from the doorknobs o f the morn ing. No evenings go wending home as though they were drag ging their clouds toward an emp ty house. If God is dead and they have Him ready for burial, I want to see the size o f that casket. I won der how many pallbearers it will take. Oh, quiet now! Here comes the procession. The music is sad. The doors open outward. But the cas ket is ordinary size, and there are only six men. “ You, sir, are you the funeral director? Well, tell me, is God in that casket?” “ Oh, no, God is not in that casket.” “Well, I’m glad to know that. I couldn’t really believe He was, but . . . Somebody’s in the casket, though, who is it?” “Oh . . . Oh . . . Oh, yes, well, that seems possible. One o f the theologians. Well, well.”
