CULTS CRITIQUE by Betty Bruechert

Readers are invited to send in questions regarding cults which can he answered briefly. Question • Will you please give me the Unity version of the Twenty- Third Psalm? Answer. We will quote it as it ap peared on Page 9 of the Unity pub lication Prosperity. We consider it highly irreverent to say the least. It reflects the Unity teaching that material blessings are included in the Christian life. It is not neces sarily so; God has promised to sup ply our need, (Phil. 4:19) but no where in the Bible is there assur ance that God’s people will become rich. In fact, He says plainly: “ But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith con tent. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some have coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced them selves through with many errors” (I Tim. 6:6-10). Here then is the Unity parody: “ The Lord is my banker; my credit is good He maketh me to lie down in the con sciousness o f omnipresent abun dance; He giveth me the key to His strong box. He restoreth my faith in His riches. He guideth me in the paths of pros perity fo r His name’s sake. Yes, though I walk through the very shadow o f debt I shall fear no evil, fo r Thou art with me; Thy silver and gold, they secure me, Thou preparest a way fo r me in the presence of the collector; Thou fillest my wallet with plenty; my measure runneth over. Surely goodness and plenty will .fol low me all the days o f my life; And I shall do business in the name o f the Lord forever.”
