Oakland Promise FY 2024 Annual Report

AGES: 18 - 24

Oakland Promise’s College Completion program supports Oakland students in transitioning to young adulthood after high school, navigating postsecondary programs, reaching graduation, pursuing fulfilling careers, and giving back to their community. The demographics of our postsecondary Scholars closely align with those of our 12th- grade scholarship recipients and reflect the diversity of our community, with 18.6% Black/African American, 25.7% Asian, 47.6% Latinx, 3.5% White, 2.7% Multiracial, 0.3% Native Hawaiian/ Pacific Islander, 0.2% Native American/ Alaska Native, and 1.4% other. Through scholarships, mentorship, and advising, the program provides essential resources and personalized guidance from an Oakland Promise Advisor or one of our partners - Beyond 12. Our CREWS program connects first-year students with experienced peers, establishing campus-specific networks that include financial aid, health services, and resource centers. After postsecondary graduation, our Alumni Program continues this support by encouraging scholars to continue to stay connected to Oakland Promise by participating in career development events and volunteer opportunities. College Completion also creates unique and impactful experiences, such as the recent Global Academics program, where Oakland Promise Scholars traveled to Jamaica this past year. This immersive journey offers Black women students opportunities for leadership development and cultural exploration, fostering self-discovery and deep insights into the Black diaspora.

Oakland Promise has been such a game changer in my college journey. It was initially recommended to me by my guidance counselor at AIMS Charter High School, where I went to high school. Oakland Promise not only gave me financial assistance, but it has strongly encouraged my academic excellence. And it did so by easing a lot of financial worries and allowed me to fully focus on my education. But beyond that, they connected me with mentorship which has had such a big impact and helped me overcome any sort of imposter syndrome and navigate college life the way I want to.”
