START OF HURRICANE SEASON IN FLORIDA

Hurricane season officially begins in Florida on June 1 and lasts through November 30 . This period brings an increased risk of tropical storms and hurricanes across the state due to its coastal location. While not every storm makes landfall, residents are encouraged to stay informed , review emergency plans, and prepare supplies in advance. Being ready early can make a significant difference in staying safe during severe weather. A hurricane is a very intense tropical storm that forms over warm ocean waters. It is characterized by: Strong winds (over 74 mph or 119 km/h), Heavy rain, And a rotating movement around a calm center called the "eye." Hurricanes develop when warm ocean water heats the air above it, causing it to rise and form clouds and storms. As the system spins due to the Earth’s rotation, it can organize into a hurricane. These storms can cause flooding, storm surge, and severe damage when they make landfall. It’s important to stay safe during a hurricane because: Winds can knock down trees, power lines, and roofs. Heavy rain can cause flooding that can sweep away cars or enter homes. Storm surge (a sudden rise in sea level) can flood coastal areas and put lives at risk.

That’s why it’s essential to listen to official warnings, have an emergency plan, and follow evacuation orders if needed. Being prepared can save lives.
