Maternity Leave FAQ
Q. How far in advance do I need to notify my manager that I will need to take a leave of absence? A. Provide as much advanced notice as possible. At a minimum, notify your manager at least 30 days in advance or, if unforeseeable under the circumstances, as soon as possible. Q. What do I do if my doctor places me on light duty or gives me work restrictions prior to the start of my leave?
A . Please email the supporting documentation to the Benefits team at benefits@maac.com. The request will be reviewed to determine if a reasonable accommodation can be made.
Q. How do I apply for leave?
A . Submit a Leave of Absence request on AccessMAA or send an email to benefits@maac.com. The Benefits Team will provide additional information regarding the next steps.
Q . When does my maternity leave start?
A. Your maternity leave starts the day the baby is born or when your doctor places you off work for the duration of your pregnancy. Any additional time taken off prior to the start of your leave will need to be approved by your manager using your department’s normal procedure for requesting time off.
Q. How am I paid while on leave?
A. Any available paid time off, such as Paid Sick and Wellness, Paid Vacation, Personal days, or benefits payable under STD will be processed and paid by MAA’s Payroll Department. Q . How are benefit premiums paid while one leave?
A . If you are enrolled in any benefit plans for which premium deductions are made from your paychecks, these deductions will continue for up to six months during your leave if you’re receiving benefits under STD, Workers’ Compensation and/or using available paid time off benefits, such as Paid Parental Leave, Paid Sick and Wellness, Paid Vacation or Personal days. If you take unpaid leave, or no longer receive a paycheck, you are responsible for paying any benefit plan premiums that are missed while on leave. Failure to pay benefit plan premiums may result in coverage being terminated and/or missed premiums being deducted from your paycheck retroactively when you return from leave.
Q. How do I add my baby to my insurance?
A. The birth of a child is a qualifying life event that would allow you to add your child to our insurance plans. You must submit a life event in Workday within 30 days after the birth , otherwise, you will have to wait until the next annual open enrollment period, which is typically held November 1-15 for benefits effective January 1st of the upcoming plan year. When submitting the life event, you will be required to attach supporting documentation such as the proof of birth. If you miss any pay periods that occur after your coverage begin date (baby’s date of birth), you will have to make up any premiums missed on the next pay period. Q. When I return from maternity leave what are my options to continue expressing milk while at work?
A. MAA supports breastfeeding mothers by accommodating the mother who wishes to express breast milk during her workday for up to one year after a child’s birth. You will work with your Manager and the Benefits team to determine a designated private area (other than a restroom) for lactation breaks.
