with the CAO for Nation Township and they have been extremely pleased with the re- sult of their solar projects. They now have two of them and are looking at installing a third one on the roof of their new fire sta- tion.” He noted: “The government has these programs out now for solar projects which makes it a good revenue for the municipal- ity. They are heavily subsidized by the pro- vincial government, but they have already been scaled back from the original pro- grams we looked at two years ago. If Coun- cil decides to pass on these projects, they

Thériault related the municipality could still borrow another $10 million, reiterating that the solar installations would be paid off in ten years. Councillors remained skeptical despite the CAO’s contention that the municipality ought to join the green movement now. “If these projects are successful, we could look into installing rooftop systems on other municipal buildings,” he said. “I have talked

PLEASANT CORNER | Despite evidence the installations would be lucrative, Cham- plain Township council continues to take a dim view of solar facilities. At its last regular meeting, council unani- mously rejected a suggestion by chief ad- ministrative officer Jean Thériault that so- lar panels be placed at sewage treatment plants in Vankleek Hill and L’Orignal. Two solar projects at the Vankleek Hill facility and a third in L’Orignal would require an investment of $2.1 million but would gen- erate revenues of about $312,000 per year. The township would benefit from re- duced energy use at these operations and from steady revenue streams for the next two decades, said Thériault, noting that The Nation is pleased with its solar-powered set-ups. However, as it did two years ago, Cham- plain council members expressed doubts about the long-term viability of the heavily- subsidized feed-in tariff (FIT) program. Councillor Paul Emile Duval observed: “For $2 million, we could pave all our roads.” Councillor Pierre Perreault agreed there were better ways for the municipality to spend its money while Councillor Helen MacLeod expressed concerns about the township nearing its borrowing limit. Solar projects are everywhere, noted Councillor Normand Riopel. “There is not one installation that is not making money,” he said. He wondered how long the “ridicu- lously high” returns would continue, how- ever. Duval concurred, advising that the !41(ŏ //1(0ŏ$.#! ALEXANDRIA | A 41-year-old Alexandria man has been charged with sexually as- saulting a girl under the age of 16. The accused is scheduled to appear in Alexandria court August 7. The charge was laid after Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry On- tario Provincial Police officers responded to a report of an assault June 16 in Alexandria. HAWKESBURY | The public is being asked to help find the person responsible for a daytime burglary June 10 in Hawkesbury. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were dispatched to a home on Cécile Boule- vard, near James Street, after the break- in was discovered at 4 p.m. Someone had walked through the backyard and gained entry to the residence via a window. The thief stole two Toshiba laptops. One laptop was blue and black with the battery miss- ing. The other computer was white/beige and had a black female devil sticker. The burglar also took a beige HP Lazer 2000 printer, two gold chains with a gold cross and heart and seven golf rings. It is believed that the suspect left through a side door.
