Why Did the Devil Tempt Jesus?

By Carey Kinsolving Summer 2025 “The problem with opportunity is that it only knocks,” writes author Michael Hodgin. “Temptation kicks the door in.” Of course, the wily devil failed in his cunning attempt to kick down the One who said, “I am the door.” But the question re- mains. Why did he even bother to tempt Jesus?

Bible scholar D. A. Carson. Second, Satan tempted Jesus three times, and Jesus resisted temptation three times by quoting the Bible. “Satan tempted Jesus because he still thought he was better than God,” says Valerie, 8. “The devil thought he was No. 1,” adds Peyton.

would not sin.”

Pride always produces stupidity because no one can carry the load of being God, except God. We’re created to depend on God and to worship Him.

“Satan tempted Jesus to make bread from stone, and he was very bad,” says Hina, 7.

Satan tempted Jesus because “he wanted to take over,” says Sam, 7. “The devil wanted to be the boss,” says Bianca, 10. “He was jealous be- cause Jesus was a higher boss.” After the mother of two of His disciples asked Jesus for choice seats in His kingdom for her sons, Jesus said, “Whoever desires to be great among you, let him be your servant.” Even Jesus’ disciples weren’t beyond grasping for power. Jesus told them He didn’t come to be served, but “to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45).

Jesus hadn’t eaten for 40 days. What’s wrong with turning a few stones into bread? Every- thing, when you’ve left heaven on a mission to live in total dependence on God the Father. Satan’s temptation began with a taunt, “If you are the Son of God...” (Matthew 4:3). Jesus heard this same taunt during His crucifixion: “If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” (Matthew 27:40). The difference between testing and tempta- tion is that the one testing you wants you to pass the test, but the one tempting you wants you to fail. God tests. Satan tempts.

The desire to have control and boss people around is more popular than ever. If you enjoy being bossy, remember the way up in God’s kingdom is the way down. Jesus washed His dis- ciples’ filthy feet. “The devil tempted Jesus so He would depart from God,” says Marci, 9. “Jesus did the right thing by quoting Scripture. The devil can’t stand words from God.” Marci, you hit the mark on two counts. First, “Satan’s aim was to entice Jesus to use powers rightly His, but which He had vol- untarily abandoned to carry out the Father’s mission,” writes

Think about this: Jesus resisted Satan’s temptation to turn stones into bread so that He could be the Bread of Life for all who believe in Him. Memorize this truth: “I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.” (John 6:51). Ask this question: Are you hungry for the Bread of Life? Pride, pure and simple, is at the heart of the devil’s fall and the temptation of Jesus. Actually, there’s nothing pure and sim- ple about pride. It’s impure and complex. The prophet Isaiah described Lucifer’s fall from heaven when he quoted him as saying: “I will exalt my throne above the stars of God” and “I will be like the Most High.” (Isaiah 14:13-14). What do you do for an encore after exalting yourself above God? Act stupid, says Hill, age unknown: “In all the devil’s stu- pidness, he kept on tempting Jesus even though he knew He

ment agencies during his presidency. In a 2023 campaign video, Trump criticized Biden for en- trenching “woke” ideology in the federal govern- ment, claiming the Biden administration was “weaponizing every tool of government power to push this racism and this Communism and Marx- ism.” Moreover, Attorney General Pam Bondi has spearheaded an effort to overturn Biden-era DEI programs at the Department of Justice and carry out Trump’s executive orders aiming to crack down on diversity policies at federal agencies. While many American corporations leaned into promoting various DEI and LGBTQ-related efforts over the past few years, a slew of major compa- nies have been retreating from diversity policies since Trump returned to office. Though, some ex- perts have warned that certain companies may be rebranding their DEI policies instead of eliminating them. “Because gay pride events and LGBTQ-related activities are all a part of the DEI landscape … they [companies] realize both in terms of popular support for DEI is dwindling, but also attention from the White House and state’s attorneys gen- eral into whether or not these DEI programs vio- late civil rights laws, that’s all kinda pointing to the idea that these companies are, like you have found, limiting their involvement [in LGBTQ causes],” Butcher told the DCNF. “And, it turns out, these are pretty radical causes, they are out of step with the mainstream.”

A host of American corporations are backpedal- ing from their involvement in gay pride events this year amid the Trump administration’s rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts across the country. There have been a growing number of reports that organizers of major gay pride parades and festivals across the U.S. are scrambling for funds due to several longtime corporate sponsors scal- ing back their support of LGBTQ events. Some scholars explained to the Daily Caller News Foun- dation that news of companies pulling back from pride events may reflect a broader shift away from DEI in corporate America. “We are seeing major companies, in meaningful numbers, either eliminating or modifying their DEI programs, which certainly does include sponsor- ing LGBTQ+ pride events and so on,” Stefan Pad- field, the executive director of the National Center’s Free Enterprise Project, told the DCNF. “I think really the bottom line here is that there has just arisen an awareness on the part of executives that this promotion of these [pride] events runs such a meaningful risk of being perceived as pushing transgender ideology on parents … I think corporations have finally woken up to the re- ality that that’s a very big risk for them to be tak- ing.”

This is really a step back to neu- trality, and I think we need to celebrate it and en- courage more of it.” The recent reports of some corporate sponsors backing out of major pride events come amid President Donald Trump’s ongoing efforts to elim- inate DEI policies across the public and private sectors, including signing several executive or- ders aiming to terminate what he has referred to
