René Campeau will run for re-election

Campeau says the past four years as a rookie councillor have taught him a lot about the difference between managing a business and managing a municipality. “What I never realized was how complex the city works,”he said.“It’s not a business. A business is simple, for me anyways.” Looking back over the past four years, Campeau feels that he and the rest of coun- cil have made some progress on infrastruc- ture and service improvements throughout all of Clarence-Rockland. He cited fire ser- vices as one example, with money spent during the past several budgets to upgrade equipment and also expand the number of full-time and volunteer fire fighters at the halls throughout Clarence-Rockland. “We are doing our best to bring up all the important services,” Campeau said. Other areas for improvement where the Ward 7 incumbent thinks council suc- ceeded include clearing and cleaning out
drainage ditches, including those in some rural residential neighbourhoods where flooding from overflowing ditches was a problem. He also noted that some road re- building has happened in all areas of Clar- ence-Rockland and money allocated in the municipal budget to the roadworks reserve fund for future rebuilding projects. He noted that the real challenge in man- aging a municipality is finding the money needed to both maintain and improve ex- isting programs and services. Campeau observed that council cannot depend on always getting money from senior govern- ment. For his own Cheney-Hammond ward Campeau’s priorities include upgrading a bridge on Drouin Road and ditch improve- ments along Gagné Road. But his overall campaign on one single goal. “I’mnot promising anything, but I’ll do the best I can,” he said. “I work for my ward, my villages, and then for Clarence-Rockland.”

Dam safety reviews scheduled
FINCH | Two dams and one dyke on the South Nation River are due for their safety reviews. The Chesterville Dam, Crysler Dam and the Crysler Dyke will all have their retention structures inspected as part of the South Nation Conservation Authority’s (SNC) reg- ular maintenance and monitoring program. “It’s in part basic housekeeping,” said San- dra Mancini, SNC water resources spokes- woman. “But proper maintenance and re- pair is essential to avoid long-term damage due to erosion and flooding. As dams age, risk can increase.” SNC staff will do the reviews with help from the provincial Water Erosion Control
Infrastructure program (WECI). The win- ter review inspection works best for SNC’s maintenance schedule, allowing any need- ed upgrades be done without interrupting the normal seasonal water flow. The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) manages WECI as a half-and-half cost- sharing program with SNC and other re- gional groups which maintain and manage flood control systems. This year’s review of the Chesterville and Crysler sites will in- volve about $100,000 worth of scheduled upgrades, including improved fencing to prevent unauthorized access to the Ches- terville Dam and repairs to the north abut- ment and retaining wall of the Crysler Dam.
