ANCC’s Fort Richardson – A Civil War Artifact Did You Know? For many ANCC members, the name Fort Richardson is related only to the social room on the third floor of the Club House. Additionally, Fort Richardson is an existing vestige of President Lincoln’s “Defenses of Washington”, the main line of defense for protection of the City. That large mound just off Memorial Drive near the Red 9 green is a visible sign of what once was one of a series of 68 small to medium fortifications encircling Washington. Fort Richardson was built in 1861 on the highest elevation on the Virginia side of the Potomac River. The fort was constructed of timbers and earthen works, and it had an inside perimeter of 316 yards that was armed with 13 pieces of field artillery.
