Stitching together a professional look.

Two of the most important qualities of a strong team are a sense of pride and a shared purpose. But one of the quickest ways to showcase that unity is through a polished, uniform appearance. Here are a few guidelines to help ensure we always look as sharp as we feel.

6

ACCESSORIES • Belt buckles should not be oversized or feature excessive designs. • Black or gray socks only – no white or multicolored. • Any visible body piercings (including tongue piercings) are to be removed while working. • No excessive jewelry or accessories such as pins or buttons should be worn. • Women may wear earrings, but hoops and dangling earrings may not be worn while handling freight. GROOMING/APPEARANCE • Please keep yourself well-groomed and free from offensive body odors. • Due to possible allergies or sensitivities, associates should not wear personal fragrance products with a noticeable scent. • Facial hair should be groomed according to handbook guidelines. • All tattoos should be either covered or inconspicuous. No offensive or disturbing tattoos are allowed. See

HATS Associates should wear only official Averitt-branded headwear. Please wear your Averitt hat with the bill facing forward. SHIRTS All driver shirts should be tucked in and buttoned, except for Averitt-approved no- tuck shirts and women’s shirts with side slits in the lower hem. PANTS Approved pants and shorts should fit properly, rest on the hips and be worn with a black belt. Shorts should not be higher than 3 inches above the knee. SHOES Shoes should be solid black work shoes, and should be clean and in good repair. For safety, some shoes are also available with steel toes. See page 19 for all options.

page 17 for a sleeve option that provides a covering for tattoos.

Clothing should be neat, clean and in good repair. For tips on how to remove several common stains, see page 36.

REMEMBER... Your garments and hats should always remain their original Averitt Red. If it’s starting to fade or fray, it’s time to replace it. See page 37 for tips on deciding whether to repair or recycle your Averitt gear.

It’s an easy assumption to make... just because people wear the same uniform, they automatically think and act as a team. But we all know that’s just not the case. A uniform doesn’t make a team. It merely identifies a team. The best teams are built around a common central core – they’re made of people who want and respect the same things. They’re made of people who are tied together by something more than just a job.

8

THANK YOU Averitt Nashville Service Center

At the same time, the best uniforms reflect the spirit of the people wearing them – providing a visual shortcut that lets you know what to expect. That doesn’t just happen. It takes time. It takes a consistent history of performance. And it takes a dedication to going the extra mile in the service of one’s teammates and customers. In short, it takes the kind of proficiency, skill and passion you demonstrate each and every day. Yes, our sharp-looking uniforms go a long way toward communicating Averitt’s commitment to excellence. But your shared professionalism is the common thread that truly ties our team together.

Every thread strengthens our professional fabric.

28

Each of our associates represents a unique tale of passion, dedication and expertise. Together, they intertwine to form the vibrant tapestry that is Averitt.

29

Although there were a few detours along the way, it seems Tracy Norris was just destined to work with Mercedes. He was working at the company’s Vance, AL, facility back in 2009 when the automaker offered employees a buyout. Tracy took the money and used it to start a restaurant. Yet, as many before him have learned, it’s a difficult industry. So he opted for a more secure leadership position at a transportation company located near Mercedes’ Vance plant. But that job came with added pressure. “Being on call 24/7 was stressful,” he says. “And my health started to go downhill. I knew I needed to do something else.” That’s when two things happened. “I had a friend who was driving trucks, and he would post pictures on Facebook. I thought, ‘Oh my, this looks like a dream job.’” Then one day at church he met one of our driving associates, and the die was cast. “I told my wife as soon as we get the house paid for, I’m going to truck driving school. After six months with another company, I can get on with Averitt.” And that’s exactly what happened. Given his Mercedes experience, his Vance assignment was a natural. But while he went with the expectation of driving trucks on the open road, he changed his mind when he got a look at the yard trucks. “I thought, man, you’re at the plant, you’ve got the cafeteria, you’re not out on the road. I fell in love with yard trucks, and I’ve been doing it ever since.” When it comes to professionalism, he sees it through a dual lens. “When people meet you, they base their perspective on what they see. So professionalism is about your demeanor, your attitude, your clothes. It’s about following protocol and meeting the high standards that both Averitt and Mercedes have. It provides a sense of reassurance for a customer when they see Averitt show up because they know what they’re going to get.” Even before joining Averitt, Adriana Becerra-Hernandez was familiar with freight – she worked in a warehouse driving a forklift to load and unload trucks. But there was one key difference. “Over there it was always the same,” she says. “Same thing, same size, every day. Here, the freight can be anything – from car parts to air-conditioning units. Every single day is different, so it’s never boring.” And that’s not all that sets Averitt apart from her previous experience. “When I came in for my interview, I was surprised to see so many forklifts running at the same time. And they were all sit-downs. I got nervous because I’d only driven stand-ups. But my interviewer said, ‘Don’t worry, we’re going to teach you everything you need to know.’ And that really made me feel more confident.” What put Averitt on Adriana’s radar in the first place? The answer lies in the old adage that “it pays to advertise.” “Last year I decided to look for a new job. I was looking online when an Averitt ad came up. I looked up the reviews and they all talked about how great the company is – the good benefits and the great pay. Those reviews are pretty much what brought me here.” Another factor was the strong, professional look the company puts forward. “I feel like customers trust companies more when they see people in uniform. It makes them feel safe. I am proud to be working here and to wear this uniform. Even my kids, when they see me in uniform, they feel proud of me. Whenever we drive by Averitt, they say, ‘Look, Mommy, it’s your job!’” When asked about anything else that stands out to her about working with Averitt, she has an answer ready. “One of the things I really like is Averitt Cares for Kids. When I first came in and saw all that money donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, I thought that was pretty awesome. And I love how the associates are able to help.”

Prior to joining Averitt, Kendall Painter was in another job known for its bright red trucks – she spent seven years as a firefighter in her hometown of Sumpter, SC. But the charm of hometown living eventually grew thin. So in 2016 she and her spouse made the move to Nashville. Since large metro fire departments typically open the hiring process only once or twice a year, she found herself in need of a bridge job. That’s when she got a friendly suggestion from somewhere very close to home. “My father-in-law actually works for Averitt,” she says. “He asked, ‘Why not come work here? If you enjoy it, stay with it. If not, wait ‘til the fire department is hiring and go from there.’ And I’ve been here ever since.” Although she started on the dock, leadership quickly saw her potential. “[Former Service Center Director] Tony Brown gave me the rundown of all the different things I could do at Averitt. Leadership really pushed me to move up. So I completed the Dock-to-Driver Program, and now I’m a city driver.” She’s also active on the recruiting front. “I have a whole spiel for that,” she says. “I have drivers come up to me all the time and ask me about working for Averitt. I tell them it’s a great place to work. The amount of professionalism at every level – it gives you a real sense of pride. It’s one of the reasons we have so many 20-, 30-plus year people. Because we all enjoy being here.” Still, one recruiting story stands out from the rest. “I delivered to a funeral home one day, and the director pulled me aside. I wasn’t sure what was going on at first. But he told me he’d been a funeral home director for 25 years and was ‘tired of death.’ He was looking for something else. A few months later he got his license and ultimately got hired by Averitt on the Nissan account.” It’s only natural to wonder what someone did before signing on with Averitt. And Steven Jean’s story is as amusing as it is unique. “Well,” he says, “I was a baby.” While that may be an exaggeration, it’s only a slight one – he just celebrated his 34th year with the company. “I started when I was in college, studying architectural drafting. I applied to Averitt to work on the dock part time. Well, it turned out the guy who interviewed me, [former Service Center Director] Tony Brown, was coaching my little brother in baseball. So I took my brother to baseball practice trying to score some brownie points. Tony came over to the fence and we talked some more, then he said, ‘Come on down to the office tomorrow. I’m going to give you a job.’ That’s how it started – working a split shift on the dock in Fayetteville, TN. And 34 years later, here I am.” When asked what’s kept him here so long, he doesn’t hesitate. “The way Averitt treats associates,” he says. “They care about you. You’re not just a number working to make the big guy more money.” He also sees the Winner’s Circle put into action every day. “Averitt takes care of us, we take care of our customers. It’s just a complete circle of happiness.” Given his time with the company, he has a unique view of Averitt’s distinctive red uniforms. “Red wasn’t originally the color for Averitt,” he says. “I’ve been through the blue button-ups, the buttoned-down collars, the navy pull-overs. But when they went with the red, it really separated us from the rest.” He adds, “And I’m a Georgia Bulldog fan, so red’s my favorite color.” He also appreciates how the uniform contributes to a professional appearance. “When we walk into a customer’s location, we look like somebody. We’re no secondhand transportation company. We’re top- notch. We look good, we provide good service. Our numbers speak for themselves. Fifty-plus years and still going strong. And getting stronger every day.”

After a decade of working as a camp leader with the YMCA, Charles Hunter decided it was time for a change. “I’d heard a lot of good things about Averitt,” he says. “And I had some friends who worked here. They referred me, and I’ve been with Averitt ever since.” That was 29 years ago. And he’s never looked back. “What I like about Averitt is how we grow each year. We have good benefits, and we really take care of our associates. And leadership is terrific. I’ll tell you, I haven’t had one bad experience since I’ve been here. That’s the honest truth.” In fact, he’s enjoyed the experience so much that he’s been eager to share it. “I’ve recruited several people that were hired here,” he says. “And they’ve been here 20-plus years now. That tells you something about the leadership around here.” Charles also has a unique appreciation for our team’s professional appearance. “Wearing Averitt red means a lot to me,” he says. “It means I’m providing for my family while at the same time enjoying a really good career. I love that.” Speaking of family, he and his wife have five grandkids (all between 7 and 3) who keep them on their toes. “We had all five of them for a weekend,” he says. “Oh my gosh, they were running all over the place. I told my wife, ‘I love my grandkids, but we’re just going to do this maybe once a year.’” When they’re not busy wrangling the grandkids, he and his wife enjoy a bit of globetrotting. “We travel twice a year. Never the same place twice. We’ve been to Jamaica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Our next trip will be to Hawaii for our anniversary.” Christopher Bennett got his early truck driving experience with the Georgia Department of Transportation, hauling heavy equipment. “One of the guys I worked with had a secondary part-time job. He said a lot of his coworkers were leaving for Averitt. So I looked online and the reviews seemed pretty good. So I said, ‘Let’s do this.’” Yet there’s an irony to Christopher’s time with our team that isn’t lost on him. “One of the biggest attractions of Averitt to me was the home time,” he says. “That was important to me, to be home on the weekends enjoying some family time.” And for his first year and a half, that’s exactly what he got driving with Truckload. Then the entertainment bug bit. “I’d been interested in On Tour Logistics since I started, but couldn’t talk myself into it. Once I did, I fell in love with it. Now I’m on the road three to six months at a time.” Having toured with names like Chris Stapleton, Brantley Gilbert, Old Dominion and others, he has an added appreciation for the role professionalism plays. “In the touring world, you’re not just representing Averitt, you’re representing the artists. The better you treat people and the more you respect them, the more they want to work with you,” he says. “And they love the fact that we’re uniformed and respectful. They say, ‘No other touring company dresses as professionally as you do.’” On the rare occasions that he’s not touring with superstars, he enjoys traveling. “I spent two weeks in France last year. I have an adopted sister over there. I also have a 5-year-old nephew that means the world to me. I love being able to be home for his dance recitals and jiu-jitsu competitions.”

The fact that he joined Averitt in 1996 affords Bradley Martin a unique distinction. “I’m the oldest Truckload guy,” he says. “Mr. Sasser’s told me that two separate times.” And before ’96? “I worked for a small company pulling dump trailers and the U.S. mail. When wintertime would come around, the rock hauling would slow down, and the mail would pick up. Especially at Christmas.” But when they shut down the rock hauling division, he knew he needed to find something with a future. “I’d noticed Averitt trucks up and down the highway forever. So I figured, ‘Well, let me give them a shot.’” After submitting his application, he called back a week later to make sure it had been received. “They basically said, ‘We’ll call you if we need you.’ So I went on vacation that next week and came home to a letter in the mail that said, ‘You need to call Averitt.’” After an interview and road test, he found himself in orientation. Fast forward to today, and Bradley has 27 years of proudly wearing Averitt red under his belt. Ask him what’s kept him at Averitt all that time and you’d better make yourself comfortable. “First off, you can’t build any kind of retirement or future when you start hopping around. You’ve got to go for longevity,” he says. “But there are so many other things as well. Like fueling at our own service centers. That saves so much time. You ever try to fuel at a truck stop? It’s aggravating. We also shower at our own places. You’ve got a place to wash your truck. You’ve got a place to wash your clothes. You’ve got a place to park. We’ve got our own shops. It’s not like you’re out on the road by yourself. It’s like we have miniature homes everywhere we go. You’re not just thrown out there in the jungle to fend for yourself.”

Uniform Care

By following a few simple laundering tips, you can see to it that we all maintain a polished, professional look.

SPOT THE SPOTS In a business like ours, stains are part of the territory. But that doesn’t mean they should take a toll on your professional appearance. Check your clothes for stains after each use. If you notice any, get the garment in the wash right away. The longer a stain sits, the harder it is to remove. DITCH THE DUST Although we know powdered laundry detergents are often handy, many contain corrosive chemicals that can break down fabric over time and can even cause colors to fade and run. So stick to liquid detergents whenever possible. CHILL OUT Cold water helps preserve colors and minimize shrinking. It also gets clothes just as clean as warmer water. That’s why you should always opt for cold water when washing your uniform. THINK BEFORE YOU THROW Tossing your shirts in the wash with heavier items like jeans and pants not only increases the number of wrinkles, but it can also shorten the life of the garment. Whenever possible, wash heavier items separately. HANG IN THERE Despite their convenience, commercial dryers can damage fabrics over time. If you have the option, use a clothesline or drying rack instead. (If an air dryer is a must, don’t overdo it – remove your clothes while they’re still slightly damp to avoid shrinking.)

FLIP BEFORE YOU DIP Turning your garments inside out before washing not only helps prevent fading, but it also helps preserve embroidered and printed elements.

Uniform Care

In pursuit of a spotless performance. A clean uniform goes a long way toward projecting a professional appearance. So if the job throws a few of these common stains your way, keep these tips and tricks in mind. DIESEL FUEL Here, you’re dealing as much with the smell as the stain. When the unexpected (and inevitable) splash occurs, hang the soiled garment outside to avoid having the odors spread. If there’s a significant amount of fuel, hose the garment off, wring it out (wearing rubber gloves), and let it hang outside for at least 24 hours. Once the smell is gone, it’s safe to put it in the washing machine. Set the machine for the largest possible load and use the hottest water the garment will tolerate. Add 1/4 cup of ammonia and a little extra laundry detergent and wash as usual. Only after the smell and stain are completely gone is it safe to put the garment in the dryer.

TIP: You could also use 2 cups of vinegar to help eliminate the odor.

OIL & GREASE Challenging stains require creative solutions. Try dusting the stained area with cornstarch and letting it sit for between 30 minutes and an hour. Then wash it with a heavy-duty detergent. Another approach is to spray some WD-40 on the stain and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Then rub a little dish soap on the area and wash it as normal. BLOOD Job one is to make sure everyone is okay. Then tackle a fresh stain by rinsing it under a lot of cold water while rubbing the fabric against itself. After that, wash as normal. If it’s an older stain, drench it in cold water, then soak it in a bucket with water and an enzyme-based stain remover like OxiClean. COFFEE & SODA Keeping your energy up shouldn’t bring your spirits down. Presoak the garment in a solution of liquid laundry detergent and cool water (about 2 tablespoons of detergent to 1 gallon of water) for at least 30 minutes. Then launder in warm or hot water. After soaking it for another 10 minutes or so, wash as normal in cold water.

Uniform Care

Repair or Recycle?

With the proper care, your uniform should have a long, fruitful life. But all things have an expiration date. Recognize when it’s time to retire those well-worn threads.

REPAIR: Stained Collar:

Try pretreating the collar with shampoo. Keep it from happening again by wearing it only once between washes. Stains Under the Arm: Dissolve a few denture-cleansing tablets in a bowl of warm water or try OxiClean. Missing Buttons: Time to sew what you’ve reaped! Get that needle and thread ready. EXCHANGE OR RECYCLE: Frayed Collar: Typically, it’s not worth the time or money to have a collar repaired. Frayed Cuffs: Replacing the cuffs can cost just as much as buying an entirely new shirt. Save yourself the time and trouble. Faded Color: Nothing waters down a professional appearance like a washed-out shirt. Once you notice your Averitt red starting to fade, it’s time to upgrade.

See page 42 to learn how to give your old Averitt shirts a new lease on life.

Footwear

Every step counts toward a professional appearance. Your shoes may be the last thing you put on, but they shouldn’t be an afterthought. They’re not just part of the uniform – they also help ensure your safety and comfort. Put your best foot forward. Your shoes play a key role in maintaining a clean, professional look. They should be black, clean, scuff-free and in good condition. Even if you don’t buy them from Averitt, make sure they fit our workplace standards. (That means no cowboy boots, loafers or sneakers.)

Sizing

Your roadmap to the perfect fit.

MEN NECK: Measure around the base of the neck, where a collared shirt would fit. CHEST: Measure across the fullest part of the chest, under the arms and across the back. WAIST: Measure over the shirt at the waistline, where pants are normally worn. Tighten the tape as snug as you prefer your pants to fit. INSEAM: Measure from the inseam to the top of the shoe.

WOMEN BUST: Measure under the arms and around the fullest part of the bust. WAIST: Measure around the narrowest part of the natural waistline (just above the hip bones). HIPS: Measure around the fullest part of the hips (normally 7" to 8" below the natural waistline). SLEEVE LENGTH: Measure from the center of the outside collar over the shoulder, around the elbow, to the point where the sleeve should end (usually the bottom of the wrist bone).

TIP: If you don’t have a fabric measuring tape, mark your measurements on a piece of string or yarn and measure it against a yardstick or tape measure.

Safety

Weave safety into every moment.

At Averitt, safety isn’t just about checking a box. It’s been our driving concern since the beginning. Because in our line of work, even the slightest lapse can potentially result in a dangerous situation for you, your teammates, or anyone else around you. So be alert, and stay focused in everything you do.

Embroidery

Pride made personal.

Give your uniform a personal touch by adding one or more of the logo options below. All are available at no cost, and you can choose any combination of two.

If you’re a current or former member of the United States military, you can showcase your service with the U.S. Veteran logo. It was one of the first associate-driven charities in the United States, and it grows stronger every year. If you participate in Averitt Cares for Kids, you can have the logo stitched on a range of garments to show your support for the good works of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Very few companies in the world can boast as many long-term team members as Averitt. If you’re a current member of the 20-, 25-, 30-, 35-, 40-, or 45- Year Team, you have our gratitude. And we invite you to show off your experience by having the logo embroidered on your garments. If you’re one of the exceptional trainers helping shape the future of Averitt by teaching the next generation of drivers, you can have the Driver Trainer logo added to your garments.
