BUSINESS BUILDING
Social workers are great listeners. Listening is one of the most essential skills for a Melaleuca Marketing Executive to develop. If you can listen to your contacts, you’ll be able to identify and understand their needs much more fully. You’ll genuinely want to help them improve their lives. Actively listening to someone is an unselfish act that breaks down barriers and builds deeper, more rewarding relationships. Social workers are professionally trained to be great listeners. “We have to approach everyone ready to learn a lot about them,” Bernadette says. “And we have to be humble enough to let others teach us about themselves.” Krista has found that empathy comes with listening. “You have to be able to
to them. I feel like I have a little more perspective on human beings, and that has been incredibly helpful to me as I’ve built my Melaleuca business.” They succeed through service. To build a robust, thriving Melaleuca business, you have to see yourself as a servant. That empowers you to help anyone who wants to learn how to build their business—and then to stick with them through the ups and downs that follow. “Social workers recognize that servant attitude right away,” Krista says. “They see our Mission Statement—to enhance the lives of those we touch by helping people reach their goals SM —and say, ‘That feels familiar. That’s exactly what I do.’” “The first core value of social work is service,” Phebe says. “What gets us up in the morning is our desire to serve.” And serve they do! “Enhancing lives is our life goal,” Bernadette says. “Doing good is in our blood. We are change agents, helping people get their needs met. As a disaster case manager, I was once assigned to assess the needs of the people who were impacted by Hurricane Harvey. I helped them find resources, sometimes taking them by the hand and helping them apply and follow up. I tried to leave every contact in a better place than where I found them.” Finding fulfillment in the work they do, even at times when the work feels thankless, takes humility and the ability to firmly place themselves in their clients’ shoes. “You have to have the heart and the desire to improve people’s lives—because it’s a lot of work for not a lot of pay,” Krista says. “And that’s why a Melaleuca business makes so much sense.”
quickly that I had to listen first to my mentors. Only then could I start to apply some of what I was bringing to the table as a social worker.”
They see past the surface.
Sometimes we talk about chicken lists at Melaleuca—lists of contacts that a business builder has been too afraid to approach because they assume those contacts won’t readily accept what Melaleuca offers. In truth, that list only exists because of the business builder’s preconceived notions. Social workers are good at getting rid of the chicken list. “As social workers, we see anyone, anywhere, as a potential client,” Phebe says. “In our minds, we’re already trying to see how we can help that

put yourself in somebody else’s shoes,” she says. “There’s a lot you see and deal with in the social work field. If you’re not able to step out of your own ideologies, you’ll never be able to give the help your client needs. When you understand their situation and their background, you’ll be anxious to learn how you can help them move forward.” Social workers also know that listening is essential to learning. They’re quick to recognize a learning opportunity. With Melaleuca, that’s called being coachable. “I admit that I began building my Melaleuca business with certain ideas in my mind about how I would approach working with others,” Bernadette says. “But I found out
person. So for us, building a Melaleuca business is for anyone who’s willing to listen, learn, and run with it! You can’t discount anybody. Melaleuca is for the little guy—but it’s for the big guy too. I don’t care how fancy you look. You still need Melaleuca.” Through the course of their work, social workers develop a ground-level understanding of what makes people tick. They’re able to look inside when most people can’t see past someone’s outer layer. “As a social worker, I worked with people from all walks of life,” Krista says. “I got to know them—their family values, their core beliefs, their cultures, and what was most important
