The idea of using pleasant-smelling

ingredients to create specific “fragrances” is almost as old as civilization itself. The earliest evidence of perfumed products goes back nearly 4,000 years, when ancient Egyptians in the Bronze Age distilled botanicals such as lily and rose into concentrated essences. When worn on the body, these essences served not only to make people smell pleasant but also to indicate a higher social status. Fragrances and perfumed products have been present in almost all major societies ever since. However, perfumes and other scented products have been subject to intense scrutiny in recent years. Specifically, listing “fragrance” as a single, generic ingredient has raised concerns among consumers.

For many, “fragrance” has become a watchword potentially indicating undisclosed chemicals or toxins. Look familiar?
