NATURAL OILS IN FRAGRANCE If a product label lists out specific notes such as “orange oil” or “jasmine extract,” that’s because the manufacturer is adding these oils themselves and not as part of an agreement with a fragrance house. Natural oils are commonly used as an additive to topical products, but manufacturers are very limited in what can be used and listed in this way. Unfortunately, this listing doesn’t provide the transparency most consumers have come to expect in their products—which is why the noise about hidden toxins in fragrance formulas continues. applies to all fragrance oils developed by a fragrance house on behalf of a manufacturer. In turn, the manufacturer of a product cannot use the “Fragrance (Parfum)” ingredient umbrella to hide other ingredients they add to the formula.

adhere to the strictest standards of safety and quality. MELALEUCA’S FRAGRANCE PHILOSOPHY

THE POWER OF SCENT Not only does fragrance have the ability to impact your mood but science has shown that it can also inspire nostalgia by directly recalling specific memories. This is because our brains recognize smells in the olfactory bulb, where scent molecules fit into corresponding nerve cells (almost like a key fitting into a lock). This in turn stimulates memory and allows the scent to transcend a simple “pretty smell”—becoming a truly emotional experience.

1. While there are hundreds of fragrance houses and fragrances partners to work with, we only work with the best: partners who not only set exceptional standards for themselves but also allow us to collaborate with them in developing oil blends that meet the very highest standards of safety. 2. We choose scent essences that are sustainably sourced and have been thoroughly tested for safety (even if they’re more expensive) to ensure we are offering products free of toxins and unnecessary additives. 3. Even though what’s in a fragrance can’t be fully enumerated on an ingredient list, all of Melaleuca’s ingredient, safety, and sourcing standards are enforced with the fragrance houses we choose to work with. 4. Not only do our fragrance products meet global standards established by the EU and certain Asian countries, but we also adhere to strict internal standards of safety and quality everywhere our products are sold.

WHAT’S THE BIG SECRET? Ever wondered why the ingredients in a fragrance are never spelled out? It’s all about protecting intellectual property! Almost every fragrance you see on the market is created in a specialized fragrance house by trained perfumers who have studied for years to build unique scents that are both simple and complex. Very few fragrance chemists elevate themselves to the level of “master perfumer”—and those who do become celebrities in their field (much like composers of music). Because there are many fragrance houses to choose from, the competition is fierce. In order for fragrance houses to keep their formulas proprietary and not allow mass copying of a perfumer’s work, laws have been put in place to protect fragrances that may have taken years to develop. These laws only apply to the unique oil blend delivered to a manufacturer directly by a fragrance house. This is what you’ll see listed as “Fragrance (Parfum)” on an ingredient list. This listing requirement

NOT ALL FRAGRANCES ARE CREATED EQUAL (TOXIC OR NOT?)

There’s a lot of information out there asserting that carcinogens, toxins, and allergens are being intentionally hidden within the “fragrance” line on an ingredient list. Our purpose here isn’t to dispute these claims (we don’t know how each manufacturer chooses to develop their formulas in partnership with a fragrance house). However, what we can tell you is that even though the “fragrance” ingredient on a label is unspecified to protect intellectual property, some fragrances are safer than others. Here’s one truth you can rely on: the fragrances we choose to use at Melaleuca

Note: While our fragranced products align with the highest standards of safety and quality, natural oils and botanicals may still cause sensitivities or allergic reactions in certain individuals. If you’re prone to these sensitivities, we recommend testing the product on a small area of your skin before using regularly.
