HEALING BEYOND THE COURTROOM Meet Tittle & Perlmuter’s Wellness Advisor

One of my mentors once told me that there is nothing therapeutic or healing about going through a legal process. I just refused to believe that.

for clients in court, I’m ensuring they have everything they need to be happy, healthy, and more whole than before.

As a wellness advisor at Tittle & Perlmuter, I ensure the health and happiness of the staff who work tirelessly to help others in the workplace. I also take care of our clients in the community, finding them resources and ensuring they have what they need to heal and move forward. I have always wanted to be there for people who have experienced something difficult in their lives. My background is in therapy. I was a trauma therapist for many years, and I have a long history of working in communities similar to the ones the law firm works in. I began to realize that some of my clients were going through legal issues, and I also had clients who were attorneys or budding lawyers in law school. I had a light bulb moment. We have therapists in police stations, hospitals, and so many other systems around us now. So, why isn’t this in place in the legal world? I began to look at law firms with a desire to help because the journey of people going through personal injury claims or traumatic court cases spoke to me. No one expects to find themselves in a legal issue, and it can be very isolating. Victims experience something traumatic and then have to rehash that difficult story on the stand or be asked questions that sometimes traumatize them even more. I applied for a job with Tittle & Perlmuter and remember talking to Allen and Scott about their desire to have someone in-house to help care for their staff. Catastrophic law is hard on clients and staff, and we had many conversations about the best ways I could serve their clients, staff, and community. It felt like a great fit. I truly love the staff, and working here is such a gift. Everyone is very mission-driven and embodies that spirit from the start of their day to the last minute. A typical day usually involves meeting with several staff members and checking in with clients. I also meet with attorneys and ensure our staff participates in volunteer work. I coordinate any wellness activities, like after- hours team-building and staff meals together. I also do a lot of community support work, such as finding resources or health care options for clients. Recently, I’ve been helping our clients get to their medical appointments and acting as a patient advocate for them. While our attorneys are fighting

My favorite part of this work is how humbling it is to have somebody trust me to hear their story and help them. It’s so hard asking for help, and it’s an honor to have clients share that part of their lives with me. It’s incredibly grounding for me to be part of that journey with them. I want to support them through the process so they’re not re-traumatized and at least feel closure or comfort that they’re not alone during that time.

In my free time, I love hiking and spending time outdoors with my two gorgeous children. I love music, and I play piano and sing.

There are very few law firms I know of that do this, and it’s a testament to how much Allen and Scott care, not just about the clients and mission but also about their own team. It’s inspiring for me to come in every day knowing how invested they are in the wellness of their staff and the people we serve. I’m proud to be part of a firm that truly understands the importance of holistic care and is committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.

SUPERCHARGE YOUR MEMORY Neuroscience-Backed Tips for a Sharper Mind

In today’s fast-paced world, having a sharp and reliable memory has become more critical than ever. Fortunately, recent advancements in neuroscience have revealed new techniques to help us improve our cognitive abilities and retain information more effectively. Here are

four scientifically backed tips to transform your memory and unlock your full potential.

NOURISH YOUR BRAIN WITH THE RIGHT FUEL.

The saying “you are what you eat” is true for brain health. A diet rich in low-sugar, low-refined carbs and healthy protein and fat sources can support optimal cognitive function. These foods provide the building blocks your brain needs to keep your memory sharp and thinking clear. PRACTICE IMPROVES MEMORY. Practicing regularly is one of the most effective ways to improve your memory. Whether memorizing song lyrics, reciting poetry, or even just trying to recall your daily tasks, the more you challenge your brain to store and retrieve information, the better it will become. So, what are you waiting for? Start exercising, meditating, fueling your brain, and practicing today — your future self will thank you.

EXERCISE YOUR BRAIN AND BODY. Numerous studies have shown that regular physical exercise can profoundly impact cognitive function. When you engage in aerobic activities such as running, cycling, or swimming, you improve your cardiovascular health and stimulate the growth of the hippocampus — the area of the brain responsible for learning and memory formation. MEDITATE FOR A SHARPER MIND. Did you know mindfulness and meditation can improve your memory? Researchers have discovered that individuals who practice meditation regularly, even just a few minutes a day, exhibit increased brain volume in the hippocampus, resulting in enhanced memory performance.

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to forget the fragility of life and the importance of simple precautions. However, for Dr. Brian Hoeflinger, a neurosurgeon in Toledo, Ohio, these lessons have been etched into his life through personal tragedy and decades of frontline experience. Hoeflinger has dedicated over 25 years to treating patients with traumatic brain and spinal injuries and has seen firsthand the devastating consequences of neglecting personal safety. Driven by his loss — the death of his 18-year-old son in a drunk-driving accident — Hoeflinger has made it his mission to educate the public on the most common factors that contribute to these life-altering injuries. ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION At the top of Hoeflinger’s list of concerns is alcohol consumption. “Without a doubt, alcohol is number one,” he states emphatically. “So many cases I see when I’m on trauma call are related to alcohol.” The link between Simple Steps to Enhance Personal Safety HEED THE WARNINGS

alcohol and traumatic injuries is well-documented, with studies showing that alcohol impairs judgment and motor skills, leading to a higher incidence of accidents and injuries. LATE NIGHTS Hoeflinger’s second warning targets the dangers of late nights, stating that “nothing good ever happens after midnight.” He explains that many incidents, including fights and accidents, occur in the late hours when people are more likely to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs and less vigilant about their safety. NOT WEARING SEAT BELTS Another critical factor Hoeflinger emphasizes is the importance of wearing seat belts. “Whether you’re the driver or the passenger, always wear your seat belt,” he urges. Despite widespread awareness campaigns, failure to wear seat belts remains a leading cause of death and serious injury in car accidents. LACK OF SITUATIONAL AWARENESS Finally, Hoeflinger stresses the need for heightened situational awareness, particularly for older adults at higher risk of falls. “Pay attention to your surroundings,” he advises. “I can’t tell you the number of people, especially elderly people, I see who accidentally fell down a flight of stairs and ended up paralyzed.” By heeding his advice, we can all help reduce the incidence of severe injuries and fatalities and perhaps even change the world for the better, one life at a time.

PARTNERSHIPS CREATING STRENGTH IN OUR COMMUNITY How T&P and Hanson House Are Helping TBI Patients Rebuild Their Lives Each year, during the Tittle & Perlmuter Annual Open House, the team reaffirms its commitment to creating safer communities. This year, the firm proudly teamed up with Hanson House TBI Clubhouse to raise funds and awareness for individuals affected by traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Allen and Scott are committed to continuously supporting individuals with TBIs, as many of our clients are on the path to recovery from these life-altering injuries. Hanson House is located in Berea, Ohio, and was founded by Anita Ferut and her late mother. The organization was created following a life-altering bike accident that left Ferut’s father with a serious TBI. Hanson House demonstrates a mission that came from love and personal understanding of all the needs that TBI sufferers face. The clubhouse offers a warm environment where members of the TBI community can find support, therapeutic services, and social activities aimed at promoting long-term wellness and independence. By fostering connections through events and life skills groups, Hanson House helps individuals navigate the challenges of recovery and find a new normal. During this year’s Open House, a touching speech highlighted the partnership’s impact. A mutual client of both Tittle & Perlmuter and Hanson House shared her inspiring journey of recovery after a motor vehicle accident that resulted in a TBI. Her heartfelt testimony revealed the barriers she faced and how the compassionate support from Hanson House’s staff helped her regain her confidence and rebuild her life.

4. Tracing the Court Jester’s Origins

MEDIEVAL MISCHIEF-MAKERS When we think of court jesters, we often picture colorfully clad figures in pointed hats dancing and jesting for the entertainment of royalty. However, these medieval performers’ roles and responsibilities were far more complex than today’s caricatures. THE EVOLVING JESTER By the 17th century, as live theater was booming, jesters began transitioning from court entertainers to professional actors and comedians. Figures like The Antics of Court Jesters

THE ORIGINS OF COURT JESTERS We can trace the court jester’s roots to the comedic actors of ancient Rome. As the Roman Empire cracked down on these outspoken performers, many became traveling entertainers, sowing the seeds for the Middle Ages and Renaissance court jesters. Historical references to these “fools” became more common between the 12th and 15th centuries, with the term “jester” gaining popularity in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Richard Tarlton, the beloved jester of Queen Elizabeth I, became renowned performers in their own right. As jesters

found fame outside the court, they paved the way for generations of comedians, satirists, and performance artists. Though the court jester institution largely died out by the 18th century, the legacy of these multifaceted performers lives on. From Shakespearean fools to modern stand-up comedians, the spirit of the court jester continues to entertain, provoke, and enlighten audiences. So, the next time you see a fool in a pointy hat, remember the rich history and complexity behind this enduring archetype.

JESTERS: ENTERTAINERS AND ADVISORS While the jester’s primary role was to entertain royalty through stories, music, acrobatics, and flatulence, they were also often highly intelligent advisors. Jesters could critique political decisions and social norms under the guise of humor, providing valuable feedback to the nobility. They even accompanied soldiers to the battlefield, distracting the enemy and delivering dangerous messages.
