Leading a team dedicated to managing and controlling the University’s financial expenditure and performance of energy, water and carbon emissions, you will have strategic oversight of carbon management and utility functions sitting within FRCS, including lead responsibility for providing assurance with all relevant energy and carbon legislation. This role has prime responsibility for delivering business management support to ULEC – the university’s subsidiary energy company, providing specialist reporting on the District Energy Network, giving strategic advice on its development and decarbonisation, managing risk in respect of relevant operations and technically complex regulatory compliance, and recommending ongoing procurement strategies for the university’s utility (energy and water) supply and management. You will be responsible for providing both strategic and technical advice against the university’s mandatory sustainability obligations and commitments, including Net Zero by 2035 and those in the Strategic Plan and Sustainability Strategy. Also, to ensure they are in alignment with local and national policy development, and for leading on decarbonisation and high-quality carbon and energy accounting across the whole university estate. University Context: The FRCS teams have a critical role to play in maintaining the buildings and energy infrastructure of the University to support academic and research departments, based in 300 buildings (500,000 m2) across the 255-hectare site. The diverse estate includes many listed buildings from Georgian and Victorian periods as well as contemporary builds and conservation areas coupled with complex research laboratories. Providing power and heat to these buildings is an extensive District Network, operating from two core energy centres on the Main Campus. A third energy centre is situated at our newly renovated Greenbank site. Some additional solar PV generation is provided on the Main Campus and at our Ness Botanic Gardens in the Wirral. ULEC has made a major contribution to the university investing in energy infrastructure and generating both commercial cost reduction, resilient power and heat, and carbon reduction. This role will report to the Director of Estates and work in partnership with the University’s sustainability teams, engineering services, and project teams to support a thriving district network, excellent energy and water performance, and transition to decarbonised utility operations.
