November 10 WAITING “And to wait for his Son” (1 Thess. 1:10).

November 14 WALK “That ye would walk worthy of God” (1 Thess. 2:12; cf. %:TK Those who are unsaved walk “ac cording to the course of this world,” and are dominated by the “prince of the power of the air” (Eph. 2:2). It is the duty of every one who has re ceived Jesus Christ as Saviour to live the life of Christ, and let Christ dwell in his life. The challenge to walk as He walked may be fulfilled by abiding in Him, the One in whom “we live, and move, and have our being.” May I abide completely in Him that my daily walk will be worthy of my Saviour. jA V A V A VA VA V A VA VA VA VA VA VA VA V A VaVA Vgj; We have been the recipients qf the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been pre served, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has ever grown; but we have forgotten God. We have for gotten - the gracious h a n d which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated w i t h unbroken fi success, we have become too H self-sufficient to feel the ne cessity of redeeming and pre serving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us. It behooves us, then, to hum ble ourselves before the of fended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness. — A B R A H A M L IN C O L N A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A / X i i s I Through the ages, the Jewish peo ple who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Messiah have suffered perse cution. Paul endured persecution for the sake of preaching the Gospel, and many other believers have been per secuted for “righteousness sake.” How many of us are willing to suffer for the One who paid the penalty for our sins? Paul said, "I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches . . . in per secutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake.” There are modern persecutions for the Christian of today. Can we take pleasure in them for Christ’s sake? November 15 PERSECUTION “And have persecuted us” (1 Thess. 2;15).

November 16 HINDRANCES “But Satan hindered us” (1 Thess. 2:18).

To wait patiently is most difficult for nearly all people; nevertheless, there are precious results and bless ings: as we wait in the presence of our Lord, we “renew [our] strength” ; David waited patiently for the Lord, and the Lord heard his cry. Some Christians have waited for the answer to their petitions concerning unsaved loved ones and after many years of earnest supplication the prayers have been answered. Our every need is supplied by God in recognition of our waiting upon Him. “The glorious ap pearing o f ... our Saviour Jesus Christ” is the most blessed reward of all wait ing. Be patient and wait for God to work. November 11 REMEMBER “For ye remember” (1 Thess. 2:9). There are many things we would like to forget. For example, “our past with its sin and shame,” but there are many priceless truths we like to remember. We are comforted to recall that when God blots out our sins, He remembers them no more. Paul ex horts us to “Remember . . . Jesus Christ.” David suggests that we “Re member the namfe of the Lord,” and the “marvelous works that he hath done,” and other innumerable bless ings. Let us center our minds on them, and our thinking will be spiritually constructive. November 12 WITNESSES “ Ye are witnesses” (1 Thess. 2:10). In a late publication, Dr. Basil Mil ler says that Dr. Reuben A. Torrey was won to Christ through the wit nessing of a godly mother; Sam Jones, by his own father; George Mueller, by a friend; John R. Mott, by a teach er; George Whitefield, by a book; and Count Zinzendorf, through a certain picture. There is no prescribed type of testimony except that it be Christ- centered, and Spirit-directed. Are we in the place where God can use our testimony? Are we making the most of our opportunities of witnessing for Him? November 13 GLORY " Who hath called you unto his king dom and glory” (1 Thess. 2:12). David said, "But thou, O Lord, art . . . my glory.” We, too, may say of our wonderful Lord that He is our glory. Someone has said, “We are but mirrors to reflect the glory of God. A mirror never calls attention to itself unless there are flaws.” Since our Lord is such a wonderful Lord, may we seek to reflect His glory at all times, and in all places. NOVEMBER, 1946

Just as Satan hindered Paul in his seryice for the Lorc|, down through the ages he has hindered God’s peo ple in every way possible in their ef forts to serve the Lord. Many times the attacks of Satan hinder us in the things we would like to do for Christ, and instead of our being “stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord,” we fail to over come the obstacles placed in our path of service by the evil one. It Is nec essary that we ask Christ to conquer Satan for us that our service may be unhindered. November 17 CROWNS “Crowns of rejoicing” (1 Thess. 2:19). The crowns awarded to believers are “stephanos,” or awards. How many of us will receive the incorrupt ible crown of victory to which Paul refers, when he compares to the born- again child of God the runner in a race? Will the soul-winner’s crown of rejoicing be awaiting us or the crown of life promised to those who endure temptation? Do we love His appearing so much that we ydll receive the crown of righteousness? The crown of glory is the crown jhat “fadeth not away.” How many crowns will we have to lay at the feet of our Lord? November 18 JOY “For what is our . . . joy” (1 Thess. 2:19). , When we win a soul for Christ, there is joy in Heaven among the angels. If we are abiding in Him, we have the fullness of joy in our hearts. God is glorified when we bear much fruit for Him (John 15:8). As others see the joy of our hearts ex pressed by loving seryice for our Lord, they too will want that joy which comes through knowing Him. May we always be prepared to show Christ to the unsaved, not only by our serv ice, but by an intelligent, spiritual, verbal explanation of the way of sal vation. November 19 HONOR “That everyone of you should . . . honour” (1 Thess. It:If). All honor should be given to God. Many times we wish to honor our selves. Jesus said, “ If I honour myself, my honour is nothing; it is my Father that honoureth me.” As Jesus realiz ed that His honor was as naught and that the honor of His Father was the all-important glory, so we should refuse to esteem ourselves highly, and no matter at what cost, strive to hon or the Lord, to win His approval and award. 17
