day, too. Paul told the Christians to be filled with the Holy Spirit, to let Him take every bit of their lives and to use them as He desired. He also told them to be joyful Christians, singing spiritual songs of praise to God, not only with their lips, but with their hearts also. (How many of us sing with our hearts? Most Christians never pay any attention to the words of the hymns which they sing.) A commandment hard to keep was given to the E p h e s i a n s : “ Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” It is easy to give thanks when we are happy and when there is no trouble or sickness in our homes..Only those who trust their Sav iour fully can give thanks "always for all things.” Sometimes it seems that God is giv ing us just the opposite of what we want and need, but we know that He does all things well. A baby who wants to place his hands in the fire thinks that his mother is cruel when she holds him back. We know that the mother is really showing her love for her child. So Christians must pray, “Teach me thy way, O Lord,” and then know that whatever He sends is for their best. FILMS Illustrating MESSAGES fro T LIFE By J. S. Points and Problems 1. "After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped" (1 Cor. 11:25). It is clear from these words that the giving of the com munion cup, as well as the bread, was performed in connection with an ordinary meal which the disciples of the Lord had eaten with Him. This is evident from other passages, such as John 13:2 and 4. This Supper came to be known as the agapae, or love feast, in the early Church. It was “when he had supped,” that the ele ments of the communion service were introduced. Some groups, such as the Brethren and others, still observe the love feast, or Lord’s Supper, in this manner and see In it a symbolic meal, stressing the I m p o r t a n c e of brotherly love, and an anticipation of the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. 2. "Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord" (1 Cor. 11:27). Some face a real problem here. They mistake the meaning of this passage, supposing that it indicates that only worthy persons are to par take, but even the best of believers in themselves are unworthy. The fact of the matter is that the communion service is for unworthy persons who have been saved by grace and made holy through the blood of Christ. The meaning of the passage is that the bread and the cup are not to be par taken of in an unworthy manner, that is, with carelessness or levity, or mere ly for the sake of the eating, since these elements represent the body and blood of the Lamb of God. Who would dare to enter His presence with a dis respectful attitude? Every Christian has a sacred obligation to observe the Lord’s Supper in the proper manner, that is, with all reverence. 3. "Let us walk honestly, as in the day" (Rom. 13:13). Christians are chil dren of the day. They have put away the deeds of darkness; they are the light of the world (Matt. 5:14). List the deeds and crimes which are done under cover of darkness. How can un believers who have the light of Christ shining in their hearts have any part in such evil practices? Because of the difficulty of travel, and because Paul had led so many people to the Saviour, he sometimes had to write to the new Christians rather than visiting them as he de sired to do. In a letter to the Christians in the town of Ephesus, Paul gave some ad vice which is good for Christians to
