After nearly five years of hardship, the Russell Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion has officially reopened its doors and is calling on local veterans to recon- nect and rediscover the vital role the Legion plays in community life. Like many Legions across the country, the Russell branch faced significant setbacks during the COVID-19 pandemic, closing its doors from 2020 to 2022. Just as it reope- ned in February 2022, tragedy struck when a devastating fire forced another closure just months later in May. Despite insurance delays and numerous challenges, the branch was able to rebuild the damaged portions of the building and reopened once again in February 2025. “It’s been a long journey,” said Cynthia Paquette, First Vice-President of the Russell Legion. “But we’re back, and we’re more committed than ever to supporting our veterans and community.” Throughout the closures, the Legion remained active. Annual Poppy campaigns and Remembrance Day services continued without interruption, and the branch-main- tained support for cadet organizations in $BTTFMNBOBOE&NCSVO5IFCSBODITFSWFT veterans across a wide rural area, from Casselman to Morewood. /PX UIF-FHJPOJTXPSLJOHUPSFCVJMEJUT membership and reconnect with veterans who may have lost touch during the years of disruption. “One of our biggest challenges today is simply reaching the veterans in our region,” 1BRVFUUFBEEFEi8FIPQFUIBUCZTIBSJOH our story, we can raise awareness and welcome more veterans back through our doors.” That message is echoed by Paul Brown, president of the Russell Legion for the past year and a half, who emphasized the impor- tance of accessibility and inclusion. “Our biggest challenge is getting the word out that we're open, and getting the word out that this place is accessible to everyone, not just to veterans or family members of veterans,” Brown said. “This building, we want it to be - and it is - a cornerstone of UIFDPNNVOJUZ8FXBOUQFPQMFUPTFFUIJT as their place to come and be with their friends, or meet family members, or come to events.” The Russell Legion is founded on three core values. The first one is to support the veterans: “to support and advocate for our veterans and their families.” The second one

It’s a unique restaurant on Rockland’s main street and one that has plans to grow: Halo Chef, specializing in African- and Caribbean-inspired coo- kery, has been open on Laurier Street for approaching three years now, and, according to the family who owns the business, they’re looking ahead to further opportunities. “One thing about the restaurant business is that there’s more to it than just preparing food. There’s marketing the business, the financial projections, investments. All of that. Right now, the team is getting their rhythm in terms of operations but thinking about expansion, more exposure, possible fran- chising and investment so we can revamp,” according to Gorcky Mukendi. Mukendi takes care of the restaurant’s financial matters, and the “team” he refers to includes Halo Chef co-owners Justin Mukendi and Christine Mukendi, his parents. Customers, says Gorcky Mukendi, range across demographics in what he describes as “actually an almost equal spread.” They are considering working toward engaging with a third-party delivery company MJLF6CFS&BUT CVUUIFZOFFEUIFOVNCFST to balance first; on occasion, they have themselves driven food orders to some of their regular customers. As for the name Halo Chef, it seems to ring out as “Hello Chef!” but the family came up with name as way to blend, in a playful

manner, a sense of “angelic” perfection when it comes to delicious food and chef, Christine, cooking it. There are also Congolese pondu (feuilles de manioc on the menu), a stewed dish of finely chopped cassava leaves, as well as fumbwa, African wild spinach stew; both are staples in Central African cuisine. Charcoal is a defining feature In answer to the question of which is her favourite dish to prepare, Christine Mukendi is hard-pressed. The chicken, goat and the ribs are right up there, she says, primarily because of her long history cooking them in UIFGBNJMZmCVUUIFDIBSDPBMTFFNTUPCF the defining feature. “The barbecue with charcoal, that’s what I’ve brought here. It reminds me of the way we cooked it back home. I have thoroughly enjoyed the earthy viande de chèvre, and the menu includes makayabu saltfish, along with deep-fried plantain (aloco), and rice that is packed with flavour and colour from heady turmeric. Kwanga, a traditional dish prepared in De- mocratic Republic of Congo and throughout Central Africa, is another Halo Chef signature dish: cassava (or yuca) is made into dough, wrapped in a banana leaf and steamed to make it tender and slightly sweet. There is also a dish called samoussa, a variation of samosa, which is a dough pocket stuffed with spiced peas, potatoes or meat and deep-fried; for dessert, you can have a waffle or a pâte à choux (pastry dough) beignet. Universal foods differentiated by spices According to Justin Mukendi, the food at Halo Chef has a “universal” quality that in essence makes it familiar. “A chicken is a chicken, right? The diffe- rence between chickens from different parts of the world is only based on ingredients and the spices added. Cooks use different ingredients, for instance, at an Indian or 1BLJTUBOJSFTUBVSBOU uIFTBZT It speaks to Christine’s experience cooking at home when she was a kid in Kinshasa: the ingredients she incorporates into the Halo Chef menu selections create the unique flavours in a dish that is made with common poultry. The seasoning for the goat, a popular African and Caribbean protein source, is proprietary however. “The ingredients for our goat are a secret,” $ISJTUJOFTBZTi8FNBSJOBUFUIFNFBUGPSB couple of hours, and then cook it on charcoal.

ÉQUIPEMENT OBLIGATOIRE Transports Canada exige que vous vous équipiez au minimum d’une veste de flottaison individuelle (VFI) homologuée et de taille adéquate pour chaque personne ainsi que d’un dispositif de signalisation sonore (le sifflet sans bille dont sont munies certaines VFI suffit). Selon votre embarcation, le moment et le lieu de vos sorties, d’autres accessoires peuvent être obligatoires, notamment : • Une ligne d’attrape flottante d’au moins 15 mètres de longueur; • Une pompe à main ou une écope;

Les participants développeront des compé- tences en matière de communication et de narration qui seront utiles tant dans le jeu que dans la vie de tous les jours. Horaire et lieux des ateliers CAPRAC offre ces ateliers à trois endroits différents dans Prescott et Russell. À Rockland, les ateliers auront lieu les mardis de 16 h à 18 h à la maison Tucker (1731, chemin Tucker). L'atelier de cinéma aura lieu le 29 juillet, l'atelier d'écriture dramatique le 5 août et l'atelier d'improvi- sation le 12 août. À L'Orignal, les séances se dérouleront les mercredis de 13 h à 15 h 30 à la Vieille prison (1023 Queen St). L'atelier cinéma est prévu le 30 juillet, suivi de l'écriture théâtrale le 6 août et de l'improvisation le 13 août. À Casselman, les ateliers auront lieu les jeudis de 13 h à 15 h 30 au bureau de CAPRAC (750 rue Principale). L'atelier cinéma aura lieu le 31 juillet, l'atelier d'écriture théâtrale le 7 août et l'atelier d'improvisation le 14 août. Tous les ateliers sont gratuits, mais les places sont limitées. L'inscription est obli- gatoire. CAPRAC encourage toute personne intéressée par les arts du spectacle, qu'il s'agisse d'un débutant ou d'un artiste émergent, à prendre part à cette opportunité amusante et engageante. Cet été, les jeunes et les adultes de la région sont invités à explorer le monde passionnant des arts de la scène grâce à une nouvelle série d'ateliers créatifs gra- tuits présentés par le Conseil artistique de Prescott et Russell (CAPRAC). Ouverts aux participants de 14 ans et plus, ces ateliers sont conçus pour présenter les principes fondamentaux du cinéma, de l'écriture dramatique et de l'improvisation. Les séances seront dirigées par Étienne Savoie, coordonnateur du programme d'été du CAPRAC, et se dérouleront en français. Les participants bilingues sont également les bienvenus. Explorer le cinéma, le théâtre et l'improvisation Les participants à l'atelier de cinéma, qui se tiendra du 29 au 31 juillet (selon l'endroit), apprendront comment les techniques de caméra, comme les angles et la composition, aident à façonner la présence d'un person- nage à l'écran. La session comprend à la fois de la théorie et une expérience pratique du langage cinématographique. L'atelier d'écriture dramatique, qui se déroule du 5 au 7 août, permet aux partici- pants de découvrir l'art unique de l'écriture pour la scène. L'atelier se concentrera sur l'élaboration de dialogues et donnera à chaque participant la possibilité d'écrire son propre monologue théâtral. Fonctions : • Rédiger des articles sur une variété de sujets, y compris des sujets découlant de réunions municipales, d'événements communautaires, de sports, d'arts, etc. • Travailler dans une salle de rédaction composée de journalistes, en relisant les articles et en élaborant des plans pour chaque journal hebdomadaire. • Prendre des photos et enregistrer des vidéos • Mettre en page le journal à l'aide d'InDesign • Préparer des articles pour le site web et l'application mobile. Qualifications : • Formation en journalisme ou dans un domaine pertinent ; ou expérience pertinente. • Bilingue : capacité à communiquer en anglais et en français ; la capacité à bien écrire dans les deux langues sera considérée comme un atout important.
