Where Your Water Comes From YLWD provides a reliable water supply that consists of local groundwater from the Orange County Groundwater Basin and water imported from Northern California and the Colorado River. Local Groundwater (About 85%) Most of your drinking water comes from local wells operated by YLWD, located on or near our headquarters. These wells draw from the Orange County Groundwater Basin — a large, natural underground water supply that stretches across northern and central Orange County. This vital resource is carefully managed by the Orange County Water District (OCWD) and replenished by rainfall, water from the Santa Ana River, and supplemental imported supplies. Before reaching your tap, groundwater is treated to meet all state and federal drinking water standards at our advanced treatment facility in Placentia and then delivered safely to homes and businesses throughout our community. Where Your Water Goes After water is used in your home or business, it flows into YLWD’s sewer system, an underground network of approximately 270 miles of sewer pipelines. YLWD does not treat wastewater. Instead, the District maintains and operates the local sewer infrastructure to ensure wastewater is safely conveyed to our regional partner, the Orange County Sanitation District (OC San), which collects, treats, disposes of, and recycles the wastewater. Groundwater Replenishment System Nearly one-third of Orange County’s wastewater is purified and reused to replenish local groundwater supplies. The Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS), operated in partnership by OCWD and OC San, is one of the most advanced water purification systems in the world using microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet light with hydrogen peroxide. This advanced treatment produces near-distilled quality water that is pumped to percolation ponds, where it percolates into the aquifer and helps replenish the Orange County Groundwater Basin. Imported Water (About 15%) About 15% of your water supply comes from imported sources. YLWD purchases this water from the Municipal Water District of Orange County, our regional wholesale provider. Imported water is supplied by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) and delivered to Southern California from two major sources: Northern California through the California State Water Project and the Colorado River through the Colorado River Aqueduct. Before entering our system, imported water is treated at MWD’s Robert B. Diemer Water Treatment Plant in Yorba Linda to ensure it meets all drinking water standards.
