Consequently, it is morally unjust to refuse to provide medical care for a patient whose alcohol abuse is not their fault and could be down to their genetics. These facts suggest that alcoholism cannot be categorised as a self-inflicted illness and so should be treated as equally as any other genetics related disease. Furthermore, environmental factors and traumatic events may cause victims of abuse to turn to alcohol as a coping mechanism. For this reason, it is unethical to refuse patients without considering these factors. While it is still their choice to abuse alcohol, they cannot be blamed for it due to the circumstances for which they may have taken up this habit.
