Change and Stability

Fairburn’s concept of maps as a background using Turkish maps behind my painting and maps from England to represent the change, however I transformed this Idea into using patterns instead. My house is filled with Turkish and Ottoman antiques and ornaments, including Nazar boncuklari and ceramic plates – Kütahya çini, including some which have been passed down generations and were originally from the Ottoman Topkapi palace. Photographing these Chinas, I then edited them on photoshop by extracting the repeated patterns on the ceramics, I created a stencil for the pattern. This was then spray painted onto my piece using similar colours.
Growing up with a Turkish mother, Turkish culture, food and religion has been a constant pillar throughout my life. For my Art project title ‘Change and Stability’, I wanted to focus on my culture growing up and in particular my mum as a Turkish migrant who moved to England from Turkey in her 20s. Taking photographs of my mum, I wanted my painting to also represent the change in culture as my mum moved from a secular Islamic country to one with a westernised culture and how she adapted to these new surroundings. For the painting’s technique and composition, I took inspiration from Artist’s Cristina Troufa and Ed Fairburn. Initially I had planned to use
