COMPOSERS
When watching musicals or movies, musical motifs narrate the story throughout, and their culmination in an overture provides an accessible and familiar way to enjoy the music of an orchestra. Richard Rodgers achieves this particularly effectively in the overture to South Pacific, exploring the sweeping lyrical melodies that comprise the music of the show; similarly, Justin Hurwitz’s Planetarium beautifully reprises music from the film La La Land, creating one of the most evocative and whimsical overtures of all time. Contrastingly, the overture to Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar opens with a haunting electric guitar solo, evolving into a frantic and powerful piece that captures the significant musical complexity and interest of the show.
