Fine Art Collector | Autumn 2021

THE EXHIBITION

The design of the exhibition centres on the use of light and colour to maximise the impact of the artworks. Magenta tones shine through from the lightbox panels, to bathe the gallery in an ethereal yet contemporary glow. Accents of colour pop throughout the gallery, thanks to carefully curated floral displays, chosen to echo the tonal scheme of the surrounding exhibition. Video projections provide a multimedia element, and capsule areas of luxe furnishing are in situ to offer comfort to guests during their visit. The windows to the gallery have been fully obscured, both to create an intimate environment in which to appreciate the art and to eliminate any natural light, creating complete sensory immersion for visitors.

After six years in the making, all was finally revealed about the latest collection by contemporary artist Stuart McAlpine Miller when it made its debut at Castle Fine Art in Birmingham’s prestigious International Convention Centre in September 2021. A closely guarded secret, kept under close wraps since its inception in 2015, the project has been a labour of love for the Scottish-born artist. Comprised of only eleven original artworks, collectors were given closed door private viewings, to take advantage of the immersive experience in the gallery, and interact with the work as it was intended.

Stuart’s interpretation of the Harry Potter stories, depicting some of the wizarding world’s most popular characters, and attempts to convey the powerful and immemorial message of ‘good against evil’, whilst simultaneously challenging whether such a polarised dichotomy can indeed exist. Created in Stuart’s signature abstracted style, this fine art series harnesses the power of bold colours and multi-layered imagery to deliver a narrative as compelling as that which inspired the work. The portraits fuse Pop Art with classical influences from Caravaggio and Hieronymus Bosch in a spectral style previously described as ‘supernatural realism’ by the BBC and Radio 2 art critic Estelle Lovatt, who also applauded its 4D aesthetic.
