Firefighters invite everyone for a visit

The “welcome mat” is out at the Hawkesbury Fire Department’s station after the Thanksgiving long weekend. Mid-October is Fire PreventionWeek and local firefighters are inviting everyone, from school students to seniors, to come on over for a visit and a chat. “We’re ‘stepping out of the box’ on how we’ve done this in the past,” said Chief Roger Champagne of the Hawkesbury Fire Department. “Rain or shine, we are doing this.” During past years the

department’s policy for Fire Prevention Week has been to schedule school visits around the town. This time, Chief Champagne and others at the fire hall decided it might be nice to invite the community to come visit with them,

have a chance to chat with local firefighters, tour through the fire hall, and see all the equipment used to both fight fires and save lives. “The population at large is more than welcome to come see us,” said Chief Champagne said. The plan during Fire Prevention Week this year, which runs from Oct. 10 to 19, is to schedule two open houses at the fire hall. The first one is Oct. 12 while the second is Oct. 18. The focus on the first open house is to host groups of students from various schools, though Chief Champagne noted that anyone else from the public is welcome to drop by. During both theWednesday and Saturday open houses, firefighters will roll out several of the trucks kept at the hall and set up four or five “stations” where firefighters on duty will be available to answer questions and provide information on fire safety and fire prevention. The Saturday open house will also feature a barbecue-fundraiser for the food bank. There is no charge for any of the barbecue treats but visitors are encouraged to toss a donation into the “boot fund” for the food bank.
