stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awaken to life and freedom. A movement comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new; an age ends, and the soul of a nation, long sup pressed, finds utterance. “ It is fitting that at this solemn moment we take the pledge of dedi cation to the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity. . . . We end today a period of ill fortune and India discovers herself again. The achievement we celebrate today is but a step, an opening opportunity; to the greater t r i umph s and achievements that await us.” This is from a speech made by India’s prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in Parliament on the eve of freedom, midnight, August 14, 1947. It is a very interesting proph ecy in light of recent developments in India and her increased role in world affairs in general and in Far Eastern affairs in particular. The World's Oldest' Living Thing A truly remarkable discovery was recently made. Living pine trees more than 4,000 years of age have been found. It has long been accepted that the famous towering sequoias on the western slopes of California’s Sierra Nevada are the oldest as well as the largest living things in the world. Recently however two dendrochro- nologists from the University of Arizona completed a study of the bristlecone pines f o u n d in the White Mountains, a range parallel to and east of the Sierra Nevadas. Using tree rings as the basis of their calculations, these experts determine not only the age of a tree hut basic weather changes dur ing the centuries of its growth. The men verified the ages of three trees as 4,100; 4,050; and 4,000 plus years. It is expected that some trees will prove to be even older. Thus the oldest were 1,000 years old when the ancient sequoias were mere seedlings! END.
