without sitting down, he leaned over on the counter and said to China Sam, “ Remember me? I’m Freddie Weaker. I’ve been in here before when I was able to pay for my meals. But now I’m broke. Could you stake me to a meal?” China Sam looked at him, trying to place the face, and then said, “Me no remember you!” Naturally I overheard the conversation so I spoke up, “ Come over here and join us. I’ll be glad to buy you a meal.” He looked at me a bit sur prised and then said, “ You will?” “ Sure,” I said as I got up from my stool, stepped toward him, reaching out my hand to shake his and added, “My name is Leonard Eilers and this is Trapper Tom.” He shook my hand and Trapper Tom’s and then joined us. He got himself involved in a poker game at the Silver Dollar Saloon and lost all his hard-earned money. So he was broke and quite bitter about it. “ Sure sorry to hear you lost all your money,” I told him. “ That’s a very expensive way to find out that gambling doesn’t pay.” F reddie was very much interested in Trapper Tom and asked him all kinds of questions about his place and his work. Naturally, Trapper Tom told him about his cabin on the edge of Sand Lake and that he’d put in several winters trapping. How sometimes it was good and sometimes it was bad. However that winter had been ex ceptionally good and he had a fine bunch of furs all ready for ship ment and would clean up for a change. Freddie listened with great interest, and it seemed to me as I watched him, that I could detect a light of envy in his eyes. After he finished his meal he thanked me saying he hoped he could do something for me some-
