FREDDIE continued

he was about to give up. Several times he wished he’ d never taken the furs. He sat down for what seemed the hundredth time to rest. He was hungry but cold beans didn’t appeal to him. And that was what he had the most of. He felt he just couldn’t carry that pack another step. He realized that he didn’t dare stay still too long because he might fall asleep and freeze to death. Suddenly he got an idea. He’d hide the furs at some spot that he could come back to and go on without them. Thinking about it, he sort of got renewed strength to go on. So he dug away the snow between two tall pine trees right up against a huge rock, placed the big bundle into the shal low hole and covered it up with what brush he could gather without too much effort and then started on down the creek. W hen I reached the Big Tree Ranch I found things in good shape. I put Deerfoot i n t o the bam, stuffed his manger full of hay and gave him a good feed of oats. Then I went to the house to fix my supper. Later on after I’d washed the dishes I was sitting by my stove in which a cheerful fire was making comforting noises. I was reading a magazine I’d brought from town that day. Suddenly I was startled by a loud knock on the door. “Who in the world — this time of the night — way out here?” I said to myself as I hurried to open the door. “ Freddie!” I ex c l a imed , as I looked at him. He was all covered with snow and looked like he was about ready to fall over. I reached out and gave him a helping hand, bringing him inside and leading him over to an old rocking chair just back of the stove. He collapsed into it and then leaned forward, holding his head in his hands. I stood by, trying to be patient but could hardly wait to find out what had brought him on such a night, where he’d been and where he was going. And to make things even worse, all he kept saying was, “ Oh no, no, it can’t be — it just can’t be.” “What can’t be? What are you

really needed them. So it was up to Him to do whatever was neces sary to get the furs back. Then after I had prayed I said, “ Tom, only God can see to it that you get those furs back and I believe He will do it. So in the meantime, let’s go about our business while we wait to see how He’s going to do it.” It was necessary for me to return to the Big Tree. As I continued over the trail that led me homeward,. Trapper Tom was on his way back to Coyote Springs to see if he could find some trace of the thief and his furs. Before I got halfway back to the ranch, snow began to fall and it looked like we were in for a stormy night. A real cold wind was beginning to stir among the trees, and when I got ou t i n t o open country things were taking on the shape of a blizzard. Of course I didn’t know, it but God was beginning to answer my prayer in behalf of Trapper Tom and his furs. Back in the moun tains Freddie was having a bad time of it. The pack on his hack was proving to be a much bigger load than he figured. It was wear ing him out. He was making very slow time. The country through which he was going was strange, rugged and very difficult to travel. He was not sure where he was or which way he was going. W hen the storm developed he had to admit he was lost. Finally he a r r i v e d at a stream. It was Bear Creek but of course he didn’t know that or that only about three miles away was the Big Tree Ranch. He decided to follow the stream be ing pretty sure it would lead out of the mountains and possibly to some ranch where he might find shelter. He was right, but had he had any idea what ranch it was going to lead him to, I’m sure he wouldn’t have gone that way. Naturally, after having been on his way as long as he was he expected to be farther away from Sand Lake than just a few miles. But he didn’t real ize that he had wandered around in circles. The second night out found him nearly exhausted and

As Christians we owe the Jewish people a tremendous debt. Through Jews God’s Holy Word was revealed. Our Saviour was born a Jew. Yet we have given them so little. Millions of Jewish people today do not even know that their Messiah, the Lord Jesus, died to save them. We can repay our debt by giving them the Gospel — now. Will you help us reach Jews with the Gospel message through the MESSAGE TO ISRAEL broadcasts from coast to coast and around the world, wffT|. by mail and per- LdP5I ' sonal calls.
