saved and who by their works are building on that foundation — after being bom again. I fear that there will be believers at the judg ment seat of Christ who will see the greater part of the fruit of their Christian service burned up as use less. Their souls will be saved be cause they trusted in Christ as their only Saviour but their works, re sembling “wood, hay and stubble” — combustible materials — will not abide the testing fires of the Lord. The entire passage should be read. The doctrine of purgatory is of one piece with the evil practice of the sale of indulgences in Europe during the Dark Ages when the Roman Catholic church led deluded souls to believe that they could buy immunity from punishment for their sins. Devils or Demons Q. Why does the New Testament speak of “ devils” when there is but one devil? A. It is a poor translation. While the Authorized (King James) Ver sion uses “ devils” the American Standard Version (1901) more cor r e c t l y t ran s l a t e s the wo rd “ demons.” You are right. There is only one devil, called Satan, Luci fer, prince of the power of the air and other titles — but many de mons. The Third Person of the Trinity Q. Is not the Holy Spirit more than an influence? That is what our pastor teaches and it disturbs me. A. He certainly is more than an influence. He is a Person, co-equal and co-eternal with the Father and the Son. The American Standard Version (1901) always translates the pronouns referring to Him as “He” and never “ it” and so does the Authorized (King James) Ver sion with the exception of one or two passages. Our Lord repeatedly called the Holy Spirit a Person, especially in His farewell discourse in John 14-16.

Unequally Yoked Q. Although a Christian myself, I married an unbeliever against the advice of all my Christian friends and relatives who pointed out the scriptural teaching that we are not to be “unequally yoked with unbe lievers.” Now God has done a won derful work in my heart and I have surrendered fully to Him. Shall I continue to live with my godless husband? A. The Word of God answers this unmistakably in 1 Corinthians 7: 12 - lb which reads in part, “ . . . And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him. . . . For what know- est thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? . . .” To be sure, it would have been far better if you had prayed for him before your marriage, asking God to save him before you married him. But now you can only ask forgiveness in dis obeying the will of God and pray for your husband’s salvation, and by your loving attitude seek to win him to Christ. Purgatory Q. From what passage of Scripture do the Roman Catholics get their idea of purgatory? A. They take 1 Corinthians 3:15 as the basis for their doctrine of purgatory, which reads: “ . . . but he himself shall be saved; but so as through fire” (ASV) . We know that neither this verse nor any other in the Word of God teaches that there is any such state or place as purgatory. There is no second chance after this life; what we do with Jesus in this life determines our eternal state. The verse referred to, taken in its setting, clearly refers to the testing of the believer’s works at the judgment seat of Christ. Our works done in the name of Christ will stand the test of His all-seeing eye, and as fire burns up the dross, so all that has not been done for the glory of God will be destroyed. Paul is addressing those who are
