Talking It Over

TANGANYIKA EN MOTO — that means “ lake of fire’’ in Tangan yika. Great, active volcanoes rear their heads and every native knows what those terrifying words mean. Tanganyika En Moto “ T LAKE r OF FIRE!

a Christian is fellowshipping with other Christians who truly love the Lord he will be strengthened. But if he is regularly in the company of unbelievers, he is apt to be acting like them. Recovery! So many of you write me about loved ones who are suffering from mental illness. For your encour agement, I am quoting from a letter which I have just received. This started some months ago when early one morning my phone rang. It was a grief-stricken mother call ing long distance about her grown son whose behavior had become so extreme that the parents were ser iously considering psychiatric help. After a lengthy conversation the mother decided on a plan of action. During the following months she wrote me, telling about placing him in a mental institution. Subsequent phone calls and letters told of visit ing him-—-noting the setbacks as well as the improvement he was making. And what is the ending of the story? Read the mother’s words: “ I am happy to tell you some thing that I think you will be glad to hear- 4 -the recovery of our son about whom you gave me counsel. And I know you will want to join us in giving thanks to our heavenly Father for answered prayer. “ The electric shock treatments were followed by miracle drug ther apy to no avail. Finally his mind seemed perfectly clear but the ner vous tension held him in its grip. Next came the insulin treatment, which I signed for with such mis givings. “ Praise God he seems perfectly well now! He has gone back to his work. He flies here to see the psy chiatrist for periodic check-ups. “ Thank you for your kind inter est and prayers and for the precious verse you gave us, Psalm 84:11, with its gracious promises. ‘For the L ord God is a sun and shield: the L ord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.’ ”

Wanted: School Psychologists Q. What opportunities are there for Christian psychologists, and what training is necessary? A. There is a great need for men psycho logi sts in public schools. Every year I know of vacancies in elementary schools which go un filled because I cannot find born- again Christians who are trained in this field. What a pity that Christian lead ers do not challenge young men to enter the field of school psychology. It is one of the greatest mission fields. Good salaries? Yes, but much more important is the fact that school psychologists who love the Lord have many opportunities to lead young people as well as adults to Christ. Requirements are established in each state by its department of ed ucation. These requirements vary somewhat but in general they are: 1) Bachelor’s degree in elementary education with emphasis in psychol ogy? 2) At least one year teaching experience in an elementary school; 3) Master’s degree in school psy chology. Too Old to Change? Q . Should we expect any person ality changes in people who are over 30 years of age? After 30, don’t our personalities just become more pronounced? A. As long as a person is still living there is a chance that he will modi fy his behavior. Changes are usual ly difficult, requiring a long time. However, a pe r s on who knows Christ as his personal Saviour can change much more quickly than one who does not. Why? Because through the Word of God a person is convicted of his inadequacies and his wrongdoings. And through the Holy Spirit who indwells the be liever he has supernatural power. “ I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Phil. 4:13). If a person wants to change he should also look at his associates. If

To Africans without God and His Son, the three words are dread fully real. Africans flock to hear the Gospel. Sometimes they walk a whole day to listen to PTL's workers and sound trucks preaching the Word. These are golden days of oppor tunity for all Africa! The demand is so great that occasionally Gospels must be rationed. They are given out at the rate of 30,000 a week — and still eager hands reach for more. Africa is awake, reading, listening!
