For most people, the appeal of DIY braces stems from a desire for results at a fraction of the cost. The allure of a cheap, quick fix for bad teeth is compelling. However, orthodontists compare DIY braces to playing Russian roulette with your teeth. Going the cheap route can cause serious infection and damage to the teeth and gums, which could end up costing significantly more than traditional braces in the long run. When you use DIY braces, you can move your teeth too quickly and along the wrong paths, which can cause the root to dissolve. You also run the risk of creating clenching problems,

They can range from home improvement projects to homemade beauty supplies, but the newest trend in DIY projects has nothing to do with home decor — it has to do with your teeth. People have started to take orthodontics into their owns hands by attempting to straighten teeth with items such as fishing line, electrical wire, rubber bands, and paper clips. Doctors say they’ve seen an increase in patients who have tried DIY braces. These projects have gained traction on social media, where teens make videos that capture their smile-correcting attempts. The American Association of Orthodontics reported that 13 percent of its members see patients who have tried DIY braces.

INGREDIENTS

1 heaping tablespoon fresh basil or mint, chopped 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon maple syrup 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar

1 pound strawberries, thinly sliced 3 medium peaches, thinly sliced

DIRECTIONS

1. In a medium serving bowl, combine the strawberries, peaches, blueberries, and basil. 2. Drizzle lemon juice, maple syrup, and balsamic vinegar on top. 3. Gently toss to combine. 4. Serve immediately, or chill for later.
