cal, regional, and internation- al level. My goal is to provide to property owners real-world examples of practical solutions and construction management approaches that GZA has developed to address complex contaminated sites that have allowed these sites to be rede- veloped for industrial, mixed or residential use. Internally, I have mentored a number of GZA staff and am currently an instructor of our Project Manager Training program. Tell us how and when you began your career in the profession you are in,

about your current posi- tion and why you choose the field/profession you are in today? My Eagle Scout Project en- tailed the restoration of a sec- tion of creek in a township park that was formerly a ce- ment plant and quarry. While I was working on that project I decided that I wanted to be an Environmental Engineer. At Penn State, I focused my studies on the remediation of contaminated soil and ground- water. A few years out of college I found my dream position at GZA, designing and managing the remediation of properties with contaminated soil, sedi- ment and groundwater. What were some of your early goals and did any- thing happen to change them? I went to Penn State to become an Environmental Engineer and clean up con- taminated Sites. For the last 13 years at GZA, I’ve done just that. My initial career path through college and my first year or two at GZA was solely to design and permit remediation approaches to allow for the redevelopment of properties. However, since then, my focus has shifted from the traditional design/ permitting role to construction management of these projects. What challenges and or obstacles do you feel you needed to overcome to be- come as successful as you are today? Over the past few years emerging contaminants such as perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) have stolen the headlines. In many states regulations for the cleanup of these compounds is in its infancy and many times prop- erty owners must modify their remediation strategies for unrelated compounds, sometime during construc- tion, to address these “new” contaminants. It is important not only to have a thorough understanding of the regu- lations, but have a strong management team in place to both technically select the most appropriate remediation approach and ensure that it is completed on (or as close to on) time and budget. In the last few moths alone, I’ve had several projects that have had to address these compounds at some level or another. 

As trends change from sub- urban sprawl to redevelop- ment of urban centers, in par- ticular the waterfront, so too have the projects that I work on. I’m proudest of the projects that I have managed over the last few years that ultimately transform properties from va- cant industrial ruin to thriving residential or mixed use. LSRP LEADERSHIP

Remediation of deep contaminated soil in residential neighborhood.

Remediating a brownfield resolves the past for a brighter future. At GZA, we’ve helped build that future with thousands of brownfield projects successfully completed across New Jersey, Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic, and worked to make New Jersey a model for more effective site remediation through a decade of LSRP leadership.
