Before attempting to make any physical checks or repairs, make sure that the circuit breaker supplying the blower starter is open and locked out.
1. If the blower will not run, check for the following: a. Blown fuses or heaters. b. Bad electrical connections. c. Burned out motor, the impeller(s), or drive. d. Incorrect wiring due to recent work or repairs. e. An obstruction in the impeller or drive.
2. If the blower motor is overheating: a. Check the ambient temperature. b. Check the motor amps.
3. If the motor amps exceed the nameplate rating, including the service factor: a. Check the motor amps with no load by closing the valves in the inlet and/or discharge line. The motor amps should be be- tween 30% and 50% of the nameplate rating. b. Check the line voltage at the motor and the starter. c. Check the motor rpm’s. d. Check the configuration of the inlet piping. An elbow or butterfly valve located too close to the blower inlet may create a false load on the motor. 4. In rare instances, pre-rotation of the inlet gas in the direction of the impeller’s rotation can reduce the available suction, volume, and thus, the overall efficiency of the exhaust blower. A short section of straightening vanes or tubes can eliminate this phenomenon, which can be caused by the piping configuration, especially in long, straight runs to the exhaust fan inlet.
