North American 8480 Series Recuperator Selection Procedure and Engineering Worksheet

Sheet 8480-2

SELECTION PROCEDURE FOR THE 8480 SERIES RECUPERATOR

The following steps outline a typical process to select and specify the 8480 Series Recuperator. Following these steps will assure that the recuperator application will meet the anticipated performance requirements. To facilitate this process, the user is encouraged to use Sheet 8480-2 “Engineering Worksheet for the 8480 Series Recuperator”. Selection Process :

1.

Record the process temperature.

2. Record the radiant tube information including the mounting length (length from wall hot face to radiant tube exhaust flange), the centerline length (inside the furnace), the tube outside diameter and the tube inside diameter. 3. Calculate the heated surface area and the tube L/D (centerline length/outside diameter) 4. Determine the required output from the radiant tube to the process either by measurement of current conditions, current input with estimated exhaust temperatures or by manufacturing specifications 5. Make a preliminary recuperator selection based on radiant tube inside diameter and available mounting length. See the ordering information section of Bulletin 8480 for available options. 6. Determine the performance based on the recuperator selection and operating conditions by referencing the appropriate performance graphs in Sheet 8480-1 “8480 Series Plug-In Recuperator Engineering Data”. 7. Estimate the new radiant tube exhaust temperature given the application of the recuperator. Note that for the same input to the furnace, the application of a recuperator typically reduces the exhaust temperature exiting the radiant tube into the recuperator. Handbook Supplement #290 outlines a procedure for estimating exhaust temperatures from radiant tubes. Note that if this exhaust temperature varies significantly from the estimates made in step #4 then steps #5-7 should be repeated until a good match is achieved. 8. Record the recuperator performance metrics of expected preheated air temperature, combustion air pressure differential and exhaust pressure differential. 9. Refer to the “Ordering Information” section of Bulletin 8480 for options and part number selection.

WARNING: Situations dangerous to personnel and property may exist with the operation and maintenance of any combustion equipment. The presence of fuels, oxidants, hot and cold combustion products, hot surfaces, electrical power in control and ignition circuits, etc., are inherent with any combustion application. Components in combustion systems may exceed 160°F (71°C) surface temperatures and present hot surface contact hazard. Fives North American Combustion, Inc. suggests the use of combustion systems that are in compliance with all Safety Codes, Standards, Regulations and Directives; and care in operation.
