JULY RADIO M ESSAGES
T here are many wonderful rela tionships which the believer is privileged to share with the God whom he serves. In Judges 5:31 we read, “So let all thine enemies perish, 0 Lord: but let them that love Him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might.” Here we find the union intended to exist between the child of God and his Lord. We talk a great deal about loving the Lord, but one of the greatest tragedies is that we don’t always get around to doing it. Christ’s big ques tion to us in these days is the one He asked Peter, “Simon, son of Jonas, do you really love me?” In the Greek He used the word agape. This is al ways used when talking about the love of God. Peter answered weakly, “Mas ter, I'm very fond of you.” The second time He asked, “Simon, do you really love Me with the same kind of love wherewith the Lord loved you?” The response, however, wasn’t any better. The third time the query was put to him Peter was grieved and terribly hurt. He had been confronted with the fact of his failure to love the way he
should. He had only been impressed and influenced by the Lord, so that the result was a strong attachment or fondness. Peter hadn’t really been enjoying the love of God shed abroad in his heart by the Holy Spirit to be given unto him. The picture was com pletely changed on the day of Pente cost. This man became a new creature, filled with the Holy Spirit. It is my belief that loving the Lord is something the Holy Spirit does. This is His activity within the soul. If you really want to love the Lord, but have to admit that you haven’t really gotten much further than being extremely fond of Him, you need the Holy Spirit to fill and flood your life. If you are prepared to abandon your life to Him, for the Holy Spirit dwells in all born-again believers, let Him accomplish His own eternal purpose in and through you. Just tell Him, “Blessed Holy Spirit, You came to live within me, to make the risen Christ real within my soul. I want You to know that I admit You haven’t been allowed to control, fill and flood my life with Yourself. I’ve been too 3
busy controlling my own life. Right at this moment I want you to captivate me.” If you do this you will discover that you begin to love the Lord in a way that you didn’t dream possible. This is not a love that just talks and sings hymns, but one which evidences itself by action. A young man wrote to his girl friend all sorts of wonderful things. He said he loved her so much that he was prepared to climb the highest mountain only to be by her side. He promised that he would swim the widest ocean just to be with her. He further affirmed that he would fight the biggest lion for the privilege of her company. Going on this way for a few pages of the most expensive lit erature he drew his remarks to a close. After an affectionate farewell and a few little “X’s” on the bottom, he added this P.S., “I’ll be over Fri day night if it doesn’t rain.” This sort of love is cheap and is only a lot of talk. If the Lord asked you the ques tion, “Do you really love Me?” how would you answer it?” What happens to people who really love the Lord is found here in Judges 5 :31, “Let them that love the Lord be as the sun when he goes forth in his might.” One of the strangest things is for an Englishman to talk to people living in California or other sunny areas of the United States about the sun. We just don’t know too much about it over in England. The only type of sunshine we have is the liquid kind. Flying above the clouds in Europe, however, I have seen the sun and I love it. I have never mis taken the sun for anything else, even though I haven’t seen it too often. It is absolutely unmistakable. We, as Christians are to be as the sun, so distinctive, so radiantly clear in our testimony. We desperately need Christians who are absolutely distinctive about their testimony. I have a wonderful friend who lives way up in the North of Eng land. He is a printer who is not very tall and who has a bent spine so that he is almost doubled over. Around town he is known affectionately as
“Percy the Printer.” People tease him because he is a Christian. I have heard more than one person say, how ever, “If ever there is a Christian around these parts it’s little ‘Percy the Printer.’ ” The reason is because he is just like the sun. One couldn’t mistake him for anything else. There is a certain and unmistak able radiance about the sun. Many young people, and we seem to have an abundance of the long haired vari ety over in England, tell me that whenever they have gone to church it always seemed to be such a miser able business. One fellow told me that he became in te re s ted in spiritual things and decided to go to a church. He didn’t want to go in but stood outside for the length of the whole service. As he watched the people come out he was greatly disillusioned. He said, “They all looked just as mis erable as when they went in.” The Bible says, “They that love the Lord will be like the sun.” Do you have a radiance about you? So many are* bitter and cynical, their entire approach is negative. Wherever we go we are to bring life in such measure that eternal life has been in us. To the degree in which we allow the Spirit of God to fill our lives we can demonstrate a sun-like quality of victorious existence. Illimitable power is available to us. The next time you see the sun, ask yourself, “Is that a picture of me?”

They That Know the Lord
by Stewart Briscoe
T he wonderful thing about wait ing upon the Lord is the blessed discovery that we can enjoy a new quality of experience. God desires that we should love Him with every part of our being. As we do, some thing wonderful happens. We are able to go forth to victory with a new vigor and vitality only He can give. In Daniel 11:32 we are told, “And such as do wickedly against the cov enant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.” There is a very clear distinction be tween knowing about the Lord and knowing the Lord. I know quite a bit about some of the very famous peo ple of the world, and yet I have met very few of them. It is possible to be fully acquainted with all the details concerning a well-known individual and yet not be personally acquainted with him. This is one of the trage dies of the 20th century. Our church es are full of people who know about the Lord, but so many of them have never become personally involved through faith. In John 14 the Lord spoke to Phil lip, “Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me?” Here was one who walked, talked, ate and slept with the Mas ter, he had spent three years with Him, but for some strange reason, he didn’t really know the Saviour. There is only one thing worth glory ing in, and that is that we know Christ. Paul said, “I count everything but loss except for one thing: know ing Christ Jesus.” Peter’s last words were, “Grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” Get to know Him bet ter! There is only one way you can know the Lord, and that is by revela tion. God takes the initiative and re veals Himself to us. God gave Daniel a glorious revela
tion of His power as well as His per son. When they talked of putting him in the fiery furnace, Daniel’s com ment in readiness was, “He is able and He will!” He had a revelation of God’s person, power, and purpose. He really knew his Lord. How does one get to know another person? It comes through spending time with him. We need to spend ev ery moment of every day with Christ. It is not sufficient to have just a few minutes at the beginning or at the ending of the day. The entire 24 hours must be shared with Him. The days, with all their joys, sor rows, tribulations and opportunities, are to be lived with an awareness of God’s matchless presence through the indwelling Holy Spirit. Put the Lord on the spot; test Him and claim His promises. The more you trust Him, the more faithful and thrilling you will find Him to be. There are two interesting things about people who really know the Lord as suggested in our text. It says they shall be strong and do exploits. Daniel reveals strength quite clearly. He lived in very dangerous days and yet was a man with a remarkable ca pacity to relax and be at peace. This is strength. The reason for his con fidence in the midst of danger was that he knew his God. Daniel lived in very disappointing days, too. Those who should have been pillars were crumbling away. Even in the face of failures from others Daniel’s tremendous confidence was unshaken. He was always con sistent. He had an inner reservoir of strength and power because he knew his Lord. He could say with calm assurance, “God is able and He will.” Your strength, too, can be made per fect in weakness. We are also told that those who love the Lord do exploits. It is too bad that we have neglected the doc- 5
trine of works not as a means of salvation, but as a proof of it. When we stand at the judgment seat of Christ, He is going to test our works (I Cor. 3). We are saved by grace, through faith and not of works, but rather unto works. Daniel seemed to specialize in ex ploits. When the edict came that they were all to eat the king’s meat, Dan iel was absolutely uncompromising. He purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself. There wasn’t anything negative about his testi mony either. When there was trouble over praying Daniel wasn’t an exhi bitionist who wanted everyone to see what he was doing. He knew God and without fear of man opened his windows to reveal his faith. Since he had always prayed with his windows open there was no need to stop now just because the king was annoyed. While he was thrown to the lions, he was almost oblivious of the situation. The person who didn’t sleep and who got up early was the king. Daniel was strong and did exploits because he knew his God. To the degree which we know the Lord will be the area whereby we show strength and do exploits. The question now resolves itself for each one of us personally, “How well do I know Him?” Commit your life to the Saviour afresh. Put Christ to the test and prove Him for yourself. This is the way you get to know Him bet ter.
When a person thinks he has some power of his own he is kept from taking all power from Christ. * * • DANGER OF FRETTING Have you ever been so concerned about a certain situation that you found your self in a “stew?” The Bible tells us, “fret not yourself"(don’t get in a ‘stew’), because of evil doers.’’ Such agitation will only serve to destroy our peace of mind and bring in confusion. Worry and anxiety not only rob us of our joy but also they are sins against God. In the long ago, John Wesley spoke forcefullyin declaring, “Iwould no more dare to fret than I would to swear or to curse. To have persons at my ears murmuring and fretting at everything is like tearing the very flesh from my bones.” Of course, modem science has now shown that one of the greatest causes for physical and mental difficulties cen ters right in these areas. A faithful Christian was discussing life with a friend who complained that everything went wrong for him. He was constantly fretful. The trusting saint asked, “Don’t you think the Lord governed the world without much problem before you came into it?” The friend stopped short and had to agree. The Christian continued. “And so God will govern the world very well after you’re called home. What makes it so difficult for you to trust the Lord to take care of all your concerns for the relatively little time that you’re here?” Too seldom do we look on the bright side of things. Consider the future and have faith in God. In this way you can welcome whatever comes, knowing that GocPs will is uppermost no matter how dark we may feel the outlook may ap pear. So, “Fret not thyself because of evil doers. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him and He will bring it to pass.” I f I really, really trust Him, shall I ever fret? I f I really do expect Him, can I e’er forget? I f by faith I really see Him, shall I doubt His aid? I f I really love Him, can I ever be afraid? * * * Too often we use weak threads in seek ing to mend our ways. 6

Dead While Alive
S OME STRANGE words about a wo man are given by the Apostle Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. In I Timothy 5:6 we read, “But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.” How sad to say these things about a beautiful woman. Of course, we don’t have her name, but we can get a pretty good picture of her. We all have five senses which are occupied with the things of life. Some people only live by those five senses. That is what the Bible means when it tells us that some peo ple are sensual and do not have the Spirit. This is the kind of individual who is dead while he lives. Solomon declared, “The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear with hearing.” How true that is. This is why new songs and artists are con stantly paraded before the ear, and why Hollywood continues to grind out movies to appeal to the eye. People are never satisfied. Sometimes they want to see a picture twice, but after that it has to go on the shelf and new ones must be brought out. If you live only for these things, you are spiritually dead. One time I was riding with an un dertaker in the hearse and asked him, “What did the Lord mean when he said, ‘Let the dead bury their dead’?” He replied, “I don’t understand, tell me about it.” I told him, “You’re a dead undertaker burying this dead person. “Are you kidding?” he shot back. “Do I look like a dead one?” I reminded him that there are three kinds of death; physical, spiritual, and eternal. God speaks and man does not respond. God commands and man doesn’t obey. God loves and man doesn’t reciprocate. No man who is dead would be able to. The Lord wants to see some life in us. You will not be able to win a soul unless you show signs of life. Let me illustrate. A dog is dead to the things
that are human. It doesn’t care about music, arts, sciences, mathematics, chemistry or medicine. He is dead to these things. Are you dead to God? Does His presence inspire your heart? The Lord so loves you that He gives eternal life when you trust the Sav iour. Another example is of a chim panzee who is dead to human beings. Its trainer, by using methods of coax ing or a whip, can make it do some human things, just like some people go to church at times. They have to go, otherwise they would never bother for they are not really interested. The preacher talks for a half hour and they think they can never stand it, yet they aren’t bothered in spending hours in front of a TV. The unsaved person is alive to everything of this earth, because it all appeals to his senses. The Lord Jesus Christ gives us new life in Him. This is the kind of life that brings enjoy ment of God here as well as in the hereafter. One of the marks as to whether you are saved or not, whether you have eternal life, is determined by what you consider important. If you don’t care for His company down here, having no time for prayer or Bible study, what will you do when you get to glory? Is it easier for you to read a cheap novel than to go

part for spiritual things. He is sensual. Why should the Lord come running to help an individual like this? The Saviour wants to give you the gift of eternal life. In this way you will have the capacity as well as the desire to let Him have more of your life. While no one else may realize it, the Lord knows whether you are just putting on or if you are truly living for Him. Fall in love with the Saviour and He will give eternal life to your soul. tian educators: those who can speak positively about what science actually does teach, and how that true science and the Bible are never really at odds. A s a part of the instruction, as they prepare for their teacher's credentials, we offer excellent courses in science. Right now, we are working toward the erection of a second story on our overcrowded Science Building. On top of the structure, we hope to be able to put a fairly large telescope and covered dome. In this way students will have the opportunity to study thoroughly this subject under dedicat ed faculty members who have been trained in the field. Our Science Department does not have funds available for this project. Every penny will be needed to erect the building itself. The telescope will cost approximately $1,500.00 and the dome another thousand. We felt you would be interested in sharing this information. Perhaps the Lord will give you the vision. Think what it will mean to have godly teachers, knowledgabie in various fields of sci ence, who will be able to present the truths of the Lord's creation, rather than the false hypotheses of the world. Here would be a wonderful memo rial to a loved one, or a place where you can make a significant invest ment in the future of tomorrow's Christian teachers and leaders. through a small book of the Bible? If so, you are dead to the words of the Lord. This is why Paul wrote to young Timothy so that he would know how to differentiate between people who were saved and those who weren’t. “By their fruits ye shall know them,” the Bible reminds us. If you say you are a Christian, why is it you never seem to talk to Christ? When a person doesn’t have eternal life, there is no real concern on his

What Will God Do?
E very once in a while someone will pompously ask me, “What’s God going to do with the people in foreign lands who have never heard the Gos pel?” I always answer them with' a more important question “What’s God going to do with you?” Don’t jump to conclusions about people in such far off lands as Africa and India until you have settled your own soul’s eternal destiny. Here in our country people hear the Gospel over and over again. Yet, percentage wise, very few have ever taken the step of faith to truly receive the Lord Jesus Christ as Sav iour. In Colossians 1 :23 we read, “If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am a minister.” You see, the Bible tells us that the Gospel is preached “to every creature under heaven.” Incidentally, verse one of this same chapter reveals that the whole world has heard the message. While there are many places where preach ers have not gone, God has revealed Himself to all men (Romans 1:18-23). I saw Einstein’s theory on a black board one day but couldn’t understand a single part of it. It was so compli cated. Those who understand it, how ever, made atomic bombs. The Lord says that the Gospel has come to everyone in the world. We believe what God says. His Word is proven true! In Acts 10:34 and 35 we are told, “Peter opened his mouth and said, “Of a truth I perceive that God is no respector of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and work- eth righteousness, is accepted with him.” That simply means throughout all nations, Tibet, Afghanistan, China, Norway, Sweden, wherever and when ever you find someone who fears God and works righteousness he is ac cepted in Christ. In John 1:9 the Holy
Spirit uses the Apostle to tell us, “(Christ) was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” This may be hard for us, in our finite minds, to comprehend, and yet such things as this are not the only things I can’t understand. For instance, do you know where the color of the peahen’s eggs come from? (Pea cocks don’t lay eggs, you see.) Where does the lovely color originate ? Do you know that the pelican and other birds living around the cliffs along shore lines lay eggs which are pointed so that they can’t roll off? The pelican lays them on a flat rock to hatch. If a strong wind came along a’nd they weren't so formed, they would soon be dashed to pieces. How did the Lord know they needed to be pointed? (Ask me something easy!) In Psalm 19:2 and 3 we are given the beautiful words, “Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowl edge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.” The Zodiac is an interesting group of 12 constellations. Each one tells you something about the Saviour. The sun starts the course and goes around one month in each constella tion and ends up in the constellation of Leo, the lamb, exactly like the life of our lovely Lord. No wonder “the heav ens declare the glory of God.” The voice of heavenly bodies preach God’s message and declare His glory. Later in the Psalms we are reminded, “All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God” (98:3). Every thing God does, He does for all peo ple.” He is not willing that any should perish. God is not going to let any body excuse himself with the foolish words, “I didn’t know.” There won’t be a soul in eternity that can say the Lord neglected him. God talks to peo ple about righteousness in many kinds
of ways. When the heathen steal they don’t have to be told to hide that which they have taken. They know it’s wrong. This is evidenced by their putting it away in the dark. If they kill a person, they know enough to run and hide, or to blame someone else. God speaks to all men; He does that which is right and perfect. He will do with the hea then whatever He wants to. Remem ber, too, He is going to do with you whatever you do with Him. If you leave Him out of your life, He will leave you out of His life. That is only natural. If you don't want His heaven now, you won’t get any of it after you die. Let me urge you today to make Christ Jesus your loving Lord. TEACH M E TO LOVE There was a time when in my daily prayer I asked for all the things I deemed most fair And necessary to my life: success, Riches, of course, and ease and hap piness, A host of friends, a home without alloy, A primrose path of luxury and joy, Social distinction and enough of fame To leave behind a well-remembered name. Ambition ruled my life. I longed to do Great things, that all my little world might view And whisper, "Wonderful!" Ah, pa tient God, How blind we are, until Thy shep herd's rod Of tender chastening gently leads us on To better things! Today I have but one Petition, Lord: Teach me to love. Indeed, It Is my greatest and my only need. Teach me to love, not those who first loved me, But all the world, with that rare purity Of broad, outreaching thought which bears no trace Of earthly taint, but holds in its em brace Humanity, and only seems to see the Good in all, reflected, Lord, from Thee.
And teach me, Father, how to love the most Those who most stand in need of love — that host Of people who are sick and poor and bad, Whose tired faces show their lives are sad, Who toil along the road with footsteps slow. And hearts more heavy than the world can know. People whom others pass discreetly by, Or fail to hear the pleading of their cry For help, amid the tumult of the crowd; Whose very anguish makes them cold and proud, Resentful, stubborn, bitter in their grief. I want to bring them comfort and relief, To put my hand in theirs, and at their side Walk softly on, a faithful, fearless guide. Oh, Saviour, thou the Christ, truth, evernear, Help me to feel these sad ones dou bly dear Because they need so much! Help me to seek And find that which they thought was lost; to speak Such words of cheer that as we pass along The wilderness shall blossom into song. Ah, love divine, how empty was that prayer Of other days! That which was once so fair— Those flimsy baubles which the world calls joys Are nothing to me now but broken toys. Outlived, outgrown. I thank thee that I know Those much desired dreams of long ago, Like butterflies, have had their sum mer's day Of brief enchantment, and have gone. I pray For better things. Thou knowest, God of love, M y one desire now— teach me to love.
10
S ome interesting statements for our consideration are found in the Old Testament. In Jeremiah 2 :22 we read, “For though thou wash thee with nitre (alcohol), and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.” Then look at this question in the 13th chapter and verse 23, “Can the Ethiopian' change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.” Men have many colors. I have pre cious friends who have all different shades of skin. I have a particular love for the dear Indian people, such as the Navajos of our own land. While no man can change the color on the outside, the Lord expects for us to be cleansed within as far as the stain of sin is concerned. Apart from Christ, no man is better than another. We are all lost, unregen erate sinners, needing the Saviour. The moment we enter the world we are sinners. The Bible rightly tells us, “The wicked go astray from the womb, as soon as they be bom, speaking lies.” While he may like to, man can’t do one thing to change the color of his skin. The white skinned want to get brown and so go out into the sun. The brown or black people would like to have lighter skins. But as man can’t do anything to change the color of his skin so is it impos sible for him to work out a remedy for the sinfulness of his own soul. I have known some men who have finally rid themselves of some beset ting sin, and, as a result, have been so overtaken with their achievement that they have become proud. Pride, of course, is one of the worst kinds of sins. Our iniquities cover us from head to foot. In another illustration, the Bible
reminds us that the leopard has spots all over him, and it is not able to change any of them. The animal is born with them and there is no pos sible way of getting away from it. While the Ethiopian is dark all over, the leopard is dark only in spots. This is a picture of some sinners who are absolutely rotten, filthy and vile, while others just have pro nounced spots on them. The latter group may have a lot of nice things about them but every once in a while, their evil spots will come out. Both the leopard and the Ethiopian got his spots from his parents. Spiri tually speaking, this is true with every one of us. It was true with our parents as well. Too many people think they are like the leopard, only sparsely spotted. We need to come to the realization, however, that we are black all over, apart from the cleansing blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. Christ doesn’t try to remove the spots by scraping, washing, or cut ting. There is only one way to have them depart and that is through the power of the Lord. So, while some sinners seem to be all bad, while others appear to us as only spotted, they both desperately

need the Lord. These spots of sin in all of our lives cannot be covered by powder or paint, for the old nature is still underneath. We need to be made new men and women in Christ, transformed by the light of His glo rious Gospel. It is what we are inside that proves what we are outside. We must have the Lord who alone can bring us new life in Christ. In Psalm 49:7 we read, “None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him.” One’s eternal destiny must, and can only, be determined here while he is still living. The Saviour gave us the solemn words, “If you are still in your sins, where I go you cannot come.” Man is lost and guilty needing justification. Man is wrong inside. Washing the outside with bleach or peroxide will make no difference whatsoever. Ever present are the desires for evil things. For such iniquities, soap will never take them away. There is a paint company that car ries the slogan, “Save the surface and you save all.” This is not true, spiritually speaking. It is the life inside that needs regeneration. May the blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son cleanse us from all sin, placing all our iniquities upon the blessed Sav iour.
A Christian is one who has given up some of his own comfort in order to provide it for others. * * * SU STA IN ING STRENGTH An ancient monarch had twin sons, but no one knew which one was bom first. All who knew the pair thought them equal in intelligence, personal charm, and physical strength. The king had to make a very difficult decision. He told them in his declining years, “I am sending you together to a far comer of my kingdom. One of my advisors tfiere will place equal burdens upon your1shoulders. My crown will go to the one of you who first returns bearing his burden cheerfully as a king should.” On their way the princes met an aged woman who was struggling under a load too heavy for her to bear. While one stopped, the other protested, “We’ll have burdens of our own to worry about. Don’t waste your time on her," and he hurried on his way. His kindly brother stayed behind, however, receiving the poor woman’s grateful thanks. But his being sought for help didn’t end there. Along the road from day to day he found others who were pleading for as sistance. A blind man took him miles out of his way. One who was lame slowed him to a cripple’s walk. Many days had passed when he finally reached his fa ther’s advisor and secured his own burden. Then, it was with quicken pace that he hurried home. Arriving at the palace his brother was completely dis mayed. “I gave up along the way. How did you ever make it with such ease?’’ The future king thoughtfully replied, “I suppose the secret is that by helping others carry their burdens I found the strength for my own." The Word of God exhorts us to “bear one another’s bur dens.” We are to look, not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things (the spirtual needs), of others. Are you concerned about the weight that someone else has to carry? In this way your life and testimony for Christ can be enriched and extended knowing that He who gives you the strength to carry the load of another will give you the grace to sustain your own burdens in times of personal trial and affliction. * It's the duty of the pastor not only to comfort the distressed but also to distress the comfortable. 12 * *

Meaning of Names
I N THE GIVING of names the Bible has some interesting truths to re veal to us, particularly in the Old Testament. Ordinarily, unlike today, people were given names which would describe the type of life they were expected to live. This was true with the names of the disciples in the New Testament. Simon meant “hear ing with acceptance.” Scripture says, “He that heareth my word and be- lieveth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation but is passed from death unto life.” This is “hearing with acceptance” and typified Peter. James meant “supplanter” or one who takes the place of another. As a disciple, James, following the death, burial and resurrection of the Sav iour, sought to win others to the Lord. His life was given to do the work whereunto he had been called of God. John meant, “one whom the Lord loves.” How true this was of the be loved disciple. He leaned on Jesus’ bosom learning the precious secrets of His person. No wonder he was given such a tremendous revelation of the future. Andrew meant “a strong man.” This disciple was the one who went after his brother Peter. (How many of us have gone to seek out others for the Saviour?) Philip meant, “a man that loves.” How beautiful that is for there is a need for people to love the lost for Christ. It is easy to love those we like but how about those who are poor, beneath us socially and educa- cationally, or those whom we just don’t care for, perhaps because of the way they might have treated us. Matthew meant “a gift of the Lord.” What a precious name to have. God loves to give, which is revealed in the wonderful bestowment of His
Son, our Saviour. Matthew’s writ ings, in turn, are a gift to us. What blessings are there in store for us. Matthew was a politician. Sometimes we think that any man in politics has been consigned to the devil. This is not true. There are a lot of godly men in this field, and we need many, many more. Pray for those who are charged with the responsibility of running the affairs of life, whether it be in the city, county, state or fed eral government. Thomas was called Didymus. This meant “a twin.” We are to gather from this that the disciple had a brother or sister. We don’t have any specific information, however, to ar rive at any firm conclusion. It would appear that the other person was not interested in the things of the Lord. Thaddaeus meant “one who praises God.” What a beautiful name to carry through life. Regardless of what your given name may be, do people know you to be one who is always giving thanks and glorifying the Lord? When we come to Judas it gives us reason to pause and think of this

traitor. I have never known anyone who has named his child Judas, have you? The very word meant “betray er.” In a similar manner, there are the patriarchs of the Old Testament who were given wonderful names. Reuben meant “a son of his father.” A son is one who is like his father. All Christians who walk with God, serv ing the Lord, are called “sons.” We are to be like our heavenly Father even as Reuben was like his earthly father. Simon meant, “scholarship.” Here was an educated, cultured and refined boy. Levi meant, “lordship.” First we have sonship, then scholarship, and now lordship as we continually turn our lives over to Christ. Judah meant, “worship.” Here is one who loves his Lord singing and praising Him throughout the day. Dan meant, “judgeship.” We need those who base their decisions upon evidence and not hearsay. Naphtali meant, “workmanship.” Do we desire the Lord to do His eternal work in and through us? We ought to want Him to make us the kind of person we should be for eternity. Gad meant “companionship.” How wonderful to have the Lord by our side at all times. We can go to Him with all our burdens. He can be touched with the feeling of our in firmities. Every man needs someone in whom he confides. Jesus is a Friend who sticketh closer than a brother. Asher meant, “fellowship.” This has been described as being joined up together in the same job, project, or goal. Issachar meant, “partner ship.” This is one who shares profit as well as loss. The Lord is vitally interested in such things as your health and even the smallest thing of your life. Zebulun meant, “com radeship” which refers particularly to loving each other as they work and serve together. How wonderful to know this relationship with the Lord. Joseph meant, “leadership.” How sweet it is to know the Lord so well that He gives you the opportunity to be a leader in the church. This
doesn’t mean socially, but the more important area of spiritually. Ben jamin meant, “heirship.” The Bible tells us that through salvation we become joint heirs with Christ. How meaningful are these names, showing us that through faith we ONLY W A IT Oft there comes a gentle whisper o'er me stealing, When my burdens seem to me too great. GO YE INTO A LL THE WORLD (John 21:6) How many millions, alien to grace, Will pass into a lost eternity, The while we fish in the accustomed place! Launch out, launch out into the far ther sea! The oft repeated message scarcely wakes The lazy listeners, who dose and nod While countless numbers perish— for whose sakes The Saviour died. Give them the Word of God! "For God so loved the world." Not just the few Who by good fortune have the chance to hear In quiet church and comfortable pew The story, week by week, and year by year. Christ's great commission is the sim ple call, "Go Ye." The Gospel is for all, for all. — Helen Frazee-Bower ROM AN S 8:28 All my griefs by Him are ordered. Needful is each one for me, Every tear by Him is counted, One too much there cannot be; And if when they fall so thickly, I can own His way is right, Then each bitter tear of anguish Precious is in Jesus' sight. Far too well my Saviour loved me To allow my life to be One calm, long unbroken summer, One unruffled, stormless sea; He would have me fondly nestling Closer to His loving breast, He would have that world seem brighter Where alone is perfect rest. Though His wise and loving purpose Once I could not clearly see, I believe with faith unshaken, All will work for good to me; Therefore when my way is gloomy, And my eyes with tears are dim, I will go to GOD, my Father, And will tell my griefs to Him.

Is there some door closed by the Fa ther's hand Which widely opened you had hoped to see? Trust God and wait— for when He shuts the door He keeps the key. Unfeigned Faith
by Dr. John Hunter
A ll op us have personal problems, known only to us and not shared with the world. There may be sor rows, tragedies, and failures which cause tears and fears. In I Timothy 1:4, Paul writes that he is mindful of the youthful follower’s tears. We are not told what these tears might be. It could have been because of some personal failure or difficulties which had overtaken him. In the second chapter Paul exhorts Timothy in the faith, “Therefore en dure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” It appears to me that Timothy was a man facing up to problems. What a blessed word of as surance the Holy Spirit gave us through the apostle when we are ex horted, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel, according to the power of God” (I Tim. 1:7, 8). According to all information we have, this is the last epistle Paul ever wrote, and yet, from prison, he could speak with such forcefulness about hardships and tribulations. He himself had every cause to be fearful and despondent. No doubt he was cold, lonely and hungry. Everything was against him in the way of cir cumstances. His execution could come at any moment. What an encourage ment it is to see his strength, faith and confidence in the Lord. What a tender heart this great man had in telling Timothy, “I am mindful of thy tears.” When he dealt with the tears and fears he began with the subject of faith (I Tim. 1:5). In our own lives, if we have problems and difficulties, the thing that matters most is not the situa tion in which we find ourselves, but basically our faith. Here he is talking
about “unfeigned faith,” which means that which is undisguised and not hypocritical. What is your faith really like? If it cannot buoy you up on the waters of stormy adversity, you need to exam ine your own heart and life. The quality of our faith is judged by how deeply our roots go down in trusting the Lord. If our faith is only super ficial when the blustering winds of life begin to blow we will soon be toppled into the dust of discourage ment. One of the things which has inter ested me in America are the lovely artificial flowers. Sometimes it is dif ficult to tell them from the real and genuine. Unlike those which have ac tually grown, the plastic variety have never had any roots. Many people have faith just like these artificial flowers. It may look lovely and at tractive but it isn’t real and there is no life. You see, it is not how much, but rather the quality of your faith. How deeply have your roots gope down? Are they in contact with the living Word of God? Only then will t m S r iB r 1

his wife respondeth. “There are three, nay, even four things we must do ere we go.” “Three things cometh to mind,” he agreeth, “But not a fourth. Wilt thou tell me what they are? I recall first that we ask our neighbor to minister unto our flowers, then that we arrange for our grass to be mowed and watered, and of course that we have our mail for warded. Any more escapeth my mind." As she smileth the wife enjoined, “The fourth is like unto the other three, yet greater it is than all. Good husband, hast thou forgotten to dig into thy purse and take care of thy giving to the Lord? I f thou desirest to preserve the Lord’s ministry there is this to which thou must attend. Do this faithfully that it may be well with thee.” Then the husband replieth, “Verily, thou art noble and wise among women.” And he taketh care of his giving for the summer, which gave great cause for re joicing. you have the strength and wisdom to deal with tears and fears. If your faith is shallow, superficial or per haps even non-existent, you will be plagued constantly and beset with struggles. What is your personal faith like today? Is it, as Paul sug gested of Timothy, “unfeigned” ? May the Lord speak to each of our hearts concerning the personal needs of our own souls for overcoming joy and victory. VACAT ION ER 'S PARABLE Now it came to pass that, as the time of vacation drew near, a certain mem ber of the church began thinking of cool streams where fish were found in abun dance. His children thought of sandy beaches by the sea, while his wife longed for the mountains. So he saith to his family, “Lo, the hot days come and my work lieth heavy upon me. Come, let us depart and go where fishes do bite, and where cool winds bring refreshment, and the land is only beautiful about us.” “Thou speakest words of wisdom," If you are not receiving copies of the BROADCASTER monthly, you may have them come to your home or office automatically by being a member of the Biola Fellowship.
