trine of works not as a means of salvation, but as a proof of it. When we stand at the judgment seat of Christ, He is going to test our works (I Cor. 3). We are saved by grace, through faith and not of works, but rather unto works. Daniel seemed to specialize in ex ploits. When the edict came that they were all to eat the king’s meat, Dan iel was absolutely uncompromising. He purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself. There wasn’t anything negative about his testi mony either. When there was trouble over praying Daniel wasn’t an exhi bitionist who wanted everyone to see what he was doing. He knew God and without fear of man opened his windows to reveal his faith. Since he had always prayed with his windows open there was no need to stop now just because the king was annoyed. While he was thrown to the lions, he was almost oblivious of the situation. The person who didn’t sleep and who got up early was the king. Daniel was strong and did exploits because he knew his God. To the degree which we know the Lord will be the area whereby we show strength and do exploits. The question now resolves itself for each one of us personally, “How well do I know Him?” Commit your life to the Saviour afresh. Put Christ to the test and prove Him for yourself. This is the way you get to know Him bet ter.
When a person thinks he has some power of his own he is kept from taking all power from Christ. * * • DANGER OF FRETTING Have you ever been so concerned about a certain situation that you found your self in a “stew?” The Bible tells us, “fret not yourself"(don’t get in a ‘stew’), because of evil doers.’’ Such agitation will only serve to destroy our peace of mind and bring in confusion. Worry and anxiety not only rob us of our joy but also they are sins against God. In the long ago, John Wesley spoke forcefullyin declaring, “Iwould no more dare to fret than I would to swear or to curse. To have persons at my ears murmuring and fretting at everything is like tearing the very flesh from my bones.” Of course, modem science has now shown that one of the greatest causes for physical and mental difficulties cen ters right in these areas. A faithful Christian was discussing life with a friend who complained that everything went wrong for him. He was constantly fretful. The trusting saint asked, “Don’t you think the Lord governed the world without much problem before you came into it?” The friend stopped short and had to agree. The Christian continued. “And so God will govern the world very well after you’re called home. What makes it so difficult for you to trust the Lord to take care of all your concerns for the relatively little time that you’re here?” Too seldom do we look on the bright side of things. Consider the future and have faith in God. In this way you can welcome whatever comes, knowing that GocPs will is uppermost no matter how dark we may feel the outlook may ap pear. So, “Fret not thyself because of evil doers. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him and He will bring it to pass.” I f I really, really trust Him, shall I ever fret? I f I really do expect Him, can I e’er forget? I f by faith I really see Him, shall I doubt His aid? I f I really love Him, can I ever be afraid? * * * Too often we use weak threads in seek ing to mend our ways. 6
