When Terry Fox started his Marathon of Hope in 1979 he hoped to raise one dollar from every Canadian—decades later, Ter- ry Fox runs across the country have raised many, many times that and are still going strong, as shown on Sunday, September 16, on the Embrun-Russell trail. Long ti m e coordinator of the local run, Cind y Saucier, told the asse m bled runners, walkers, bikers, and rollers that, not count- ing this y ear, the co mm unit y had raised $223,055.54. Last y ear’s a m ount was over $15,000. With last Sunda y ’s contribution, the a m ount is approaching a quarter m il- lion dollars. Saucier was thrilled with this y ear’s turn- out. A fleet of volunteers greeted regis- trants, including so m e of the Russell Sco- tiabank’s staff, which contributed $5,000. Local businesses including Foodland, Fill Yer Boots café, Giant Tiger, Euphoria and others provided refresh m ents. Schools, co mm u- nit y groups and the township helped with a m enities like power, tables and toilets. Entertain m ent included striking face paint- ing b y Sharon Elliot, a Zhu m ba war m up b y Caroline Rail, and singing b y Barb and Izzie Dobko. Township m a y or J.P.
