JUNE 27, 1937 RECREATION THAT DEVELOPS CHARACTER C olossians 1:18; 1 C orinthians 10:31 Meditation on the Lesson Should our lives be departmental? Can we pigeonhole our activities? Or is our living a unit, each phase of our conduct contributing an integral part to our whole existence? We know that the last-named condition is true. Those who know us can see whether or not in every activity our lives are consistent or inconsistent with our profession. The world soon detects any difference. A beautiful motto for a Christ-centered life occurs in Colossians 1:18: “that in all things he might have the preeminence.” Does the Lord Jesus Christ occupy the place in our lives which is accorded Him in heaven? There He is “ all the glory” ; there homage and praistf are ascribed to Him in whom “ all fulness” dwells; Is Christ reigning on the throne of our hearts ? If so, His presence will make a pronounced difference in our practical living. Every thing in our daily schedule will be as He desires and orders. Again Paul says in the passage in Corin thians that every detail of our actions should be in accord with the will of G od; “ what soever ye do”—eating, working, playing— “ do all to the glory of God.” How can one’s recreation be glorifying to God? It is easy to see how going to church might glorify Him, but we need to let our other activities honor Him. Man is a triune being, possessing body, soul, and spirit. Thus he is made in the image of God who claims first allegiance in every part of His creature’s life. We are to “ do all to the glory of God.” We can glorify God by showing to fellow Christians, as well as to a scoffing world, that Jesus Christ satisfies every longing of the hungry soul, that we find our springs of joy in Him. Recreation? Yes, but let it be only that which leaves the body re freshed, the mind stimulated or rested as need be, and the spirit untainted. Do our physical and mental relaxations magnify Christ? True recreation is that in which the mind and the fatigued mem bers of the body are reenergized and rested by appropriate change in activity. Truly Christian recreation results in the quicken ing of one’s spirit. Recreation in which Christ is preeminent is truly re-creative and glorifies our Lord who has ordained our lives to be well-balanced and our bodies to be temples of the Holy Spirit. F ruitful R ecreation Lute-strings sound all the sweeter for being sometimes let down; and fields sown every year become barren. So it is with both body and mind.— E. F oster . III. P ractical S uggestions Facing the recreational problems of youth, an experienced worker was discuss ing the fact that the primary appeal must be that of the Saviourhood of the Lord Jesus Christ, and of loyalty to Him. This leader went on to offer two suggestions for developing a recreational program for young people whose home and school en vironment is pulling strongly toward world ly and harmful amusements. The princi ples were these: First, emphasize outdoor sports; second, encourage the Christian young person to have many Christian friends, companions who will stand with him in choosing to have “good times” in the best way. Are not these the factors that contribute largely to the success of the camp-confer ence movement among young people ? Un der consecrated and understanding leader ship, the Bible study in a Christian camp offers spiritual food, and thus provides a basis for surrender to Christ If well- rounded, the camp provides wholesome out door recreation, with an abundance of fun amid the large circle of fellow Christians. Cannot these worth-while relationships be found also among the members of the local young people’ s society? The Christian group whose members can play together on an outing or at a party and then can pray together in the devotional gathering at the close of the day is knit together in a fellow ship more close and satisfying than any thing the world can know.— S elected .
