The devil never fulfills his promise. He is a liar and the father of lies. He offered Adam a larger life and then pressed to his lips the cup of death. He promised the world to Alexander and gave him a profli gate’s grave. He said to Napoleon, “Bow down and worship me, and all shall be thine.” He gave him St. Helena. With lesser prizes he tempts you and me, but he is bent not on our enrichment, but our ruin. —M y Pocket Companion for 1937. JUNE 12 Christ, Our Object "Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until that he have mercy upon us” (Psa. 123:2). We are saved by faith, and we live by faith. Christ must dwell in our hearts by faith. We must not be occupied about our faith, but about the Object of our faith. Not_ with the laws of optics must we be occupied, if we would enjoy a beautiful landscape; we must look at it and feast upon it.—J. H udson T aylor . JUNE 13 Into His Likeness "But voe all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Cor. 3:18). Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, let us put our own hands afresh into His pierced hand today, and be lifted into His heavenly chariot, there to share His vision and zeal—there to abide moment by mo ment. This will mean a progressive trans lation into His image, from glory to glory, and such a development into His blessed likeness that “we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming” (1 John 2:28).—From The New Life by C aptain R eginald W allis . In the secret of Thy presence Mold my thoughts and speech; Only words the Spirit giveth Can lost sinners reach. — S elected . JUNE 14 The Surrender o f Self “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves” (Phil. 2:3). AM I INTELLIGENT? By JOHN RAYMOND HAND Mr. Hand presents a layman’s view of funda mental Christianity. His work is a powerful indictment of the modem pulpit of to-day. Mr. Hand’s training and background lends an air of sincerity to his experience which he trans mits to his readers in a most absorbing way. A Book of 72 pages—condensed and to the point. Beautiful new, large type. Can be had in paper covers at 35c, post-paid. Cloth bound, at 50c, post-paid. It will spare us much heart-burning, and heart-breaking, to recognize and to remem ber that “the way of the cross” is never the way of self-seeking, self-serving, or self-pleasing. Never! It ever is the path way of self-sacrifice for the sake of others for their good, and of loving surrender of self to the will of God for His glory. “Whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be the servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His life a ran som for many” (Mk. 10:44, 45). — B. M c C all B arbour . "If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether 1 speak of myself” (John 7:17). What is the real ego, the “ I,” that which energizes life—that in virtue of which a man is an active and significant personal ity? It is the will. When a man surren ders his will, he surrenders himself. When a man surrenders his will to Christ, when he accepts Christ’s will as the law of his being, he renders Him that supreme hom age which can only be given to God. In that final gesture he salutes Christ as di vine.—T. M iller N eatby . JUNE 16 The B ook o f L ife “ A ll Scripture is given . . . that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly fur nished unto all good works” (2 Tim. 3:16, 17). Blessed Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning, grant that we may in such wise hear them, that by patience and comfort of Thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which Thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ.— J ohn W esley . You will find in this Book guidance when you are in health, comfort when you are in sickness, and strength when you are in ad versity.— L ord R oberts . To a Greek poet we owe the lovely legend that when a certain goddess visited ancient Thebes it was always known be cause, though she was neither seen or heard, she invariably left rich blessings behind her. . . . The legend, after all, only palely mirrors the evangelistic ministry of Jesus Christ and of His church. It is no legend that wherever Jesus went in the days of His flesh unmistakable benediction found registration. All His peregrinations were marked by miracles both of word and deed. He looked upon the loveless and they blos somed into lovesome characters. He spake to the despairing, and a thrice-blessed, bliss-inspiring hope became theirs. He touched the slaves of Satan—and lo ! their shackles were snapped in sunder! — J oseph P earce .
