What's Inside: Fresh Line-Up of Local Performances

Member Spotlight: Judy Nyren Hills in the Community Feature

J anuary is the season of resolutions for many people - It is a time to plan for future success and better habits. For me, I like to instead spend this month in reflection. The end of the previous year always seems to be hustled along in the holiday season blur. It’s October, you blink, and it's January! This January has me reflecting with gratefulness on all that 2023 brought into my life. As a club we welcomed many new members (Hi! I am glad you are here.), tried all sorts of new activities, explored incredible destinations, and met new people every step of the way. You all helped make 2023 special for me and I have a feeling the same will be said about the year ahead! I’d like to make a special shout out to our fabulous line- up of local performances at Hancher and Theatre Cedar Rapids, and enticing day trips to warm your spirits this chilly season. Everything you need to know about this winter’s club activities are on the pages to come. I hope you’ll join us!

I will see you soon, Friends!

Friends Club News

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came to Southeast Iowa? After graduating from Iowa State University in the 1970’s, my husband Dave and I relocated to Iowa City. He took a veterinary position at the Lang & Kennedy Clinic while my art and home economics background led me to a teaching position in Tipton. Soon after moving to the area, we purchased our current (Moffitt) home in Iowa City. Coincidentally, we signed off on our very first home loan with Hills Bank’s former president, John Hughes. Little did we know that our small, historic, and quirky Moffitt home would one day reveal a secret under the uneven floorboards: A newspaper had been used to level a low spot under the old wall to wall carpeting and in that newspaper was a wedding photo of John and Karen Hughes! Over the years, as I have become more involved in local history and architectural preservation, I always enjoy sharing this serendipitous story. I have since come to love the area and the unique history of Iowa City. There is so much here to learn and preserve for future generations! How did you get involved in your volunteer roles originally? How did you get started? I guess I would blame my compulsive creativity and teaching gifts! It came naturally for me to plan events and create interesting or entertaining learning environments because of my interest in the work of these organizations. Some of my best memories are planning the children’s activity area at Mercy Hospital’s annual Festival of Trees and the seasonal pop-up museums I created for Friends of Historic Preservation. What organizations do you volunteer with? I have had the pleasure of volunteering in many areas in the Iowa City area, but currently I am actively volunteering with New Life Community Church, Melrose Meadows Retirement Community, Lucas Farms Neighborhood Association, and the Johnson County Historical Society. How long have you been involved with the Lucas Farms Neighborhood Association and the Johnson County Historical Society? Much of my free time the last ten years has been with leadership of Lucas Farms Neighborhood Association. Some other good neighbors did the groundwork to re-boot our association and then I became involved by planning special events and documenting our shared history. Our neighborhood sits on the land that once was owned by Iowa’s first territorial governor, Robert Lucas. Because of the annual history events I help plan for the neighborhood, I became more involved with the Johnson County Historic Society. I was delighted to help facilitate the Hills Bank Friends Club’s tour of the historic Lucas Farms Neighborhood and Gov. Robert Lucas’ Plum Grove home last summer.

Who in our community inspires you? There are so many people who work hard and serve others or accomplish important things in this area. At the moment, Lucy Murphy comes to mind - I guess you could say, “I love Lucy!” She is a 98 year old, long-time resident at Melrose Meadows Retirement Community and she still plays the piano for the weekly church services there and organizes special events with guest speakers to entertain and educate the Melrose residents. She does it all through the pain of severe arthritis. How do you see Hills Bank within our community? Being asked to reflect on how we view Hills Bank, it’s interesting to think back and realize that our bank has been a part of some of the biggest hurdles in our lives - from getting a home improvement loan for a major remodel, to a loan to expand or stabilize our business, to providing the central advisors to help us prepare for retirement, to enjoying traveling with the Hills Bank Friends Club tours! When we first moved to eastern Iowa, Dave’s boss recommended Hills Bank. John Hughes, the bank president at the time, and the staff at Hills Bank were very welcoming to Dave as a young veterinarian just getting acquainted with the Johnson County area. They also helped Dave when he took the next step to becoming a co- owner of the veterinary practice. The veterinary clinic, along with Hills Bank, were very closely tied to the agricultural life of rural Johnson County, supporting the County Fair, the Pork and Beef Producers, etc. In time, our practice re-focused to exclusively small animal veterinary medicine and Hills Bank helped with that transition as we added two more satellite clinics. They have always been family and community focused. We enjoyed the tradition of attending the Hills Bank BBQ held every year until it got too big and they had to go to other ways of showing appreciation to their customers. Thank you, Judy, for your commitment to the Iowa City area and for fostering community growth here in Southeast Iowa. A $250 donation has been made to the Lucas Farms Neighborhood Association to show our support for the work you do in our community.

Barnyar Da Though most of the first quarter of the year in Eastern Iowa is spent indoors, we encourage area families to come visit us as Spring approaches each year for Barnyard Days!

Friends Club News

rd ays What is Barnyard Days? This annual event is part of Hills Bank’s annual Ag Month celebration. At bank parking lots and inside our office buildings across the Corridor, you’ll see many different animals and maybe even pet a few. In the past, area animal handlers have brought everything from goats to pigs, and llamas to camels. Barnyard Days is a great reason to get out of the house after a long winter and an adorable grandkid photo opportunity! Why do we celebrate agriculture ?

Agriculture is intertwined with Hills Bank’s history, heritage, and values, and remains an important part of our culture today. We celebrate our agricultural roots with Ag Month: an annual celebration of spring and agriculture, including events all month long. When is Barnyard Days? We’re still working out the details for this years’ event – so stay tuned! The Hills Bank Facebook page is a great place to keep an eye on, as we’ll be creating calendar events for Barnyard Days to help remind our customers when it will take place. Watch for more information in the coming months about Barnyard Days 2024 at hillsbank.com/ag-month .

Over the month of December, Hills Bank employees took time to bring holiday joy to local families with Open Heartland’s Holiday Elves present drive! This wonderful tradition enlists individuals around Johnson County to “adopt” an immigrant family from Mexico and Central America, and shop for gifts for them (1-2 per family member). Once the gifts are purchased and wrapped, “holiday elves” drop them off at Open Heartland’s location in Iowa City to be distributed to each family – helping hundreds of neighbors have a warmer, brighter holiday. We’re happy to get the opportunity to hopefully make this family’s Christmas better! It really was a group effort from everyone.

Donor Advised Gift Fund

Basics by the Hills Bank Wealth Management Group

What is a Non-Endowed Donor Advised Gift Fund? A Non-Endowed Donor Advised Gift Fund (the “DAGF”) is a charitable investment account that is opened in your name and that can be used for the sole purpose of making future donations to 501(c)(3) charitable organizations of your choice. “Bunch” Charitable Giving for Tax Benefits Under the current income tax code, many taxpayers are no longer able to itemize their deductions, including charitable donations. A DAGF allows individuals to “bunch” charitable giving in a single year in order to itemize their tax deductions for the “bunch year.” To the right are two examples – the first example is without the DAGF and the second example utilizes the DAGF:

Example 1: No DAGF Year 1: Taxpayer donates $4,000 directly to charities. Year 2: Taxpayer donates $6,000 directly to charities. Year 3: Taxpayer donates $8,000 directly to charities. Example 2: DAGF Year 1: Taxpayer funds the DAGF

with $18,000 cash and distributes $4,000 to charities from the DAGF.

Year 2: Taxpayer distributes

$6,000 to charities from the DAGF.

Year 3: Taxpayer distributes

$8,000 to charities from the DAGF.

24

Friends Club News

What are the benefits of opening a DAGF? There are several potential tax benefits available to individuals who make contributions to DAGFs. These benefits include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following: 1. Most contributions to a DAGF are eligible as

an itemized tax deductible donation for the tax year of the contribution. This feature provides you with

the opportunity to utilize your tax deduction immediately, while still allowing you extra time and opportunity to identify 501(c)(3) organizations to which you desire to make donations and spread those donations out over an unlimited period of time.

2. Appreciated securities can be contributed in-

kind, which allows you to avoid capital gains taxes when the securities are sold within the DAGF. 3. Cash basis farmers can contribute commodities in-kind such as grain, soybeans, and corn to the DAGF. Talk to Your Tax Preparer Today All contributions to the DAGF are irrevocable and non-refundable. Therefore, please discuss your long- term charitable giving plans with your legal and tax advisors.

Example 2 demonstrates how “bunching” allows taxpayers to make multiple years’ worth of donations to the DAGF in a single tax year. In Example 2, the taxpayer contributes three years’ worth of donations to the DAGF during Year 1. The aggregated contribution makes it substantially easier for the taxpayer to exceed the standard deduction threshold and receive a tax benefit for their “bunch year,” while simultaneously allowing the taxpayer to distribute the funds to charities of their choice over several years.
