The real deal on breast cancer prevention With the wealth of health-oriented information available on the Internet, it can be all too easy to confuse reliable, scientific information with unfounded claims of danger. Here are a few breast cancer myths debunked: Myth: Wearing an underwire bra can cause breast cancer. Fact: The Canadian Cancer Society reports that there is no reliable scientific evidence to support this claim. Myth: Using underarm deodorant or antiperspirant causes breast cancer. Fact: Several scientific studies have examined this assertion and have disproved any conclusive links at this time. When going for a mammogram, however, women are asked not to use an underarm product containing aluminum, which might lead to inaccurate screening results. Myth: Radiation emitted during a mammograpy can increase one’s chances of developing breast cancer. Fact: Mammography technology uses only small, safe amounts of radiation. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation affirms that it would take exposure at least 100 times stronger than what is used in a mammogram to pose the kind of risk that outweighs the benefits. Myth: Abortion and miscarriage are risk factors in developing breast cancer. Fact: Scientific findings supported by a wide range of medical and health organizations are conclusive that neither spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) nor induced abortion are linked with breast cancer. Myth: A hard knock to the breast can predispose the bruised area to developing cancerous cells. Fact: There is no known link between bruised breast tissue and cancer. It is important, however, to be familiar with the contours and texture of your breasts so that any unexplainable tenderness, scaling, or skin irregularities can be checked out by a doctor. The most important fact of all is that early detection saves lives: the Canadian Cancer Society recom- mends an early detection plan of regular breast self-examinations, mammographies every two years for women between 50 and 69, and clinical breast examinations for all women every two years.
Trois règles à suivre pour la santé de vos seins Des statistiques inquiétantes, comme celle à l’effet qu’une femme sur neuf risque de développer le cancer du sein au cours de sa vie, font en sorte que 6200 femmes ont reçu ce diagnostic au Québec, en 2011. De ce nombre, on estime que 1300 en décéderont. Le Mois de la sensibilisation au cancer du sein, coordonné en octobre par la Fondation du cancer du sein du Québec, revêt donc une grande importance. La Fondation du cancer du sein du Québec encourage les femmes à adopter les trois pratiques de santé du sein suivantes : - Premièrement, passer une mammographie aux deux ans dès l’âge de 50 ans. Des études ont en effet démontré que cela permet de réduire d’environ 25 % les mortalités liées au cancer de femmes âgées de 50 à 69 ans. - Deuxièmement, procéder à un examen clinique chaque année, et ce, dès la vingtaine. - Troisièmement, veiller au grain, puis observer, car il est important de se familiariser avec nos seins à tout âge. Bien les connaître prend du temps et de la pratique, mais cela nous permettra de découvrir ce qui est normal pour nous. La Fondation du cancer du sein du Québec a aussi lancé un programme de sensibilisation et d’éducation à cet effet car, a priori, associer santé et seins n’est pas un automatisme. La sensibilisation à la santé du sein est sans contredit au cœur de ses objectifs de prévention. Ce programme vise à diffuser de l’information et à offrir une série d’activités qui rejoignent directement la population.
Donc, en ce mois d’octobre, on s’informe et on opte pour la prévention!
