Cumberland Invests (CONT’D FROM PAGE 30) reach. The company already ships as far as Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky, but closer markets are also promis- ing targets. “We see the higher likelihood of more graphics and that’s why we’ve upped our graphics game to be more competitive in that, but there is still a lot of industry close to the metropolitan areas like Nashville and Knoxville,” he said. Randy Swallows says Cumberland’s ramped up capaci- ty gives them a leg-up: “The biggest opportunity is capac- ity,” he said. “I don’t know of anyone who has the machin- ery that Cumberland has. Our abilities are almost endless, opening doors that were closed before. This,” he added, “helps us serve our customers and become more of a part- ner rather than a vendor.” Another benefit of the newer equipment is employee safety. Two core tenets of Cumberland Container’s mis- sion statement are “Service to Customers; Safety for Em- ployees.” Jared and plant manager Thomas Barker agree that the company’s safety record has improved with each capital addition. “The safety devices built into these ma- chines really make it a lot easier to do setups a lot more safely,” said Barker. “We have a tremendously good safety record – and we pay a lot of attention to that – but a lot of that is built into these new machines.” What’s Next? Mark Jared and his management team are vigilant in ensuring the future growth of the company. The compa- ny’s long history in Monterey, Tenn. – it’s the second oldest employer in town – and its longstanding record of custom- er service attest to its future. CFO Tim Dunn credits the legacy of the Jared family for the company’s solid founda- tion in the community. “The Jared family has reinvested heavily into the com- pany, and Mark has continued to do that, making sure the profits are plowed back into the business and making it more profitable,” he said. “The community here locally has been a big advantage,” he added, saying that some cus- tomers go back as nearly to the founding of the company 56 years ago. From the time Mark Jared “parachuted” into Cumber- land Container 13 years ago he has always deferred to his key management for their guidance and advice. His management team concept is proving itself to be a nimble and pro-active leadership tool, not only in the day-to-day operations of the business, but in its strategic direction as well. “We’re very pleased with the progress we’ve made,” he said. “And we’ve done it as a team.” What's next for Cumberland Container? Jared has some ideas, but he’s not saying. “Right now, it’s like the day after Thanksgiving: we need to probably take a break for a little bit. But I've broken promises before.” Steve Young is the former president of AICC and a reg- ular contributor to Board Converting News.
