REMEMBERING GUNNER, BAILEY, AND TUCKER
Looking Back on the Memories With My Pets
One of the greatest joys in life is having a pet. They offer us a form of unconditional love you can’t find anywhere else, and despite the responsibilities that come with owning them, it’s fun to care for another animal. Unfortunately, between running a business and raising a family, my attention is spread far too thin to properly devote anything else to a pet, so I don’t have any pets right now. However, in honor of National Pet Memorial Day this September, I’d like to tell you about the three Labradors I had as pets growing up. As a kid, we always had dogs. I have many memories of playing in the yard with the dogs, including the times when we would throw sticks or baseballs into the woods for them to fetch. Sometimes, we would load them up in the bed of the truck, drive down to the lake, and throw sticks into the middle of the lake for the Labs to fetch. They loved diving into the
water! Then, at night, the Labs would sleep at our feet. Every time we came home, it was like having the greatest entrance anyone could ask for. Their tails would wag like crazy, and we would feel so loved. Of course, their welcoming demeanor didn’t make them the best guard dogs! I’m sure if our home had ever been broken into, there would be the Labs, wagging their tails happily as if the thieves were just another member of our pack. I was lucky to have three dogs while growing up. Gunner was our first Lab, and he was a black Lab. Then we adopted a yellow Lab named Bailey, and the last one we had was Tucker, another black Lab. Each one had their own personalities and way too much fur. This was back in the days before dusters and vacuums were as powerful as they are today! We really had to work hard to pick up all the fur! Still, the Labs made up for it with their love or by letting us use them as pillows when we wanted a good snuggle. I like to think that I’ll adopt a dog again in the future, hopefully when I have more time to dedicate to the dog. But I’ll always value the time I had with Gunner, Bailey, and Tucker. They were the best dogs a boy could hope to have, and despite their inability to stop a burglar, they were fiercely loyal to our family and those we loved. Nothing illustrates this more than Bailey’s story. (I’ll warn you that this story includes death.)
We actually only had Bailey for a short period of time, from when I was in preschool through first grade, when my family moved to California for a year. So, we left Bailey with a family in Washington, and the plan was to get Bailey after we moved back. Unfortunately, there was a fire in the region where our family friends lived. The fire ended up engulfing the house due to high winds and downed power lines. Sadly, the wife passed away in the fire. And when they found her body, they also found Bailey’s lying on top of her, trying to protect her from

Bailey’s bravery couldn’t save our friend or himself, but I’ll never forget his loyalty. Their loss was tremendous, but in a small way, it’s heartwarming to know neither one of them was alone in those final moments thanks to Bailey’s instincts. There truly is no love quite like that of a pet and a human. We may not speak the same language or understand what the other is doing half the time, but when it comes down to it, that bond is strong. I hope you have many great memories of your pets, just as I fondly remember Gunner, Bailey, and Tucker.
INGREDIENTS • 1 lb ground turkey • 1 onion, diced
• 2 tbsp ketchup • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 2 eggs • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley • Salt and pepper, to taste
• 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1/2 cup bread crumbs • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1. Preheat oven to 375 F and line a baking dish with parchment paper. 2. In a large bowl, combine turkey, onion, garlic, bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, eggs, parsley, salt, and pepper. 3. Form the mixture into a loaf shape and place it in the baking dish. 4. Bake for 45 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165 F. 5. Let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
