Welcome

On behalf of the faculty and staff of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Sentry School of Business and Economics, I welcome you to our 2023 Spring Awards Dinner. I am very excited to get together once again to celebrate and honor our outstanding students and faculty. I am also excited to thank our generous donors who made tonight’s awards and this banquet possible. From their generosity we have been able to give away $93,700 to students tonight alone! We are especially pleased to welcome members of the Business Advisory Council (BAC) and our Corporate Partners. The BAC guarantees the relevance of our programs by providing input from our business and community stakeholders while our Corporate Partners help our students connect with local businesses. We appreciate your help in all our efforts. We would also like to extend an extra special welcome to our guests from Sentry, and thank them once again for their record-setting $10 million gift. As astute readers will have noticed, the school is now known as the Sentry School of Business and Economics in recognition of the gift. This naming is a proud recognition of the partnership that will elevate the profile of Sentry School, helping us attract more students to Central Wisconsin, benefiting all our business and community partners. The gift will also help renovate an existing building, Collins Classroom Center, to create a state-of-the-art facility to house Sentry School. When renovations are complete, it will be renamed Sentry Hall as a visible signal of the partnership between Sentry and UW- Stevens Point and the commitment to address the talent development needs of the region. The mission of Sentry School is to provide applied learning experiences to develop career-ready graduates. The Anderson Classroom to Career Center is a core piece of those efforts through the Mundt Internship and Career Readiness, Smiley Professional Events and Corporate Partner programs. At the graduate level, the MBA program is committed to the same goal, transforming both young and seasoned professionals.

2

Over the past year, Sentry School students: • Completed 178 separate internships in 119 organizations, gaining valuable on the job experience both regionally and nationally. • Interacted with 31 Corporate Partner organizations during 667 classroom visits and Smiley Professional events, developing professionalism skills and strengthening community ties. • Served 11 different organizations with MBA Impact Fellowships and graduate assistantships, enhancing their skills while helping our partner organizations. • Led a number of student organizations and clubs, including a Women in Business organization begun this year that has already impacted the university and the community. It is experiences and programs like these that set Sentry School apart as a leader in applied learning and student engagement. On behalf of Sentry School, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all our donor, business and community partners that help make all this possible. I would also like to thank UW-Stevens Point administration for their support, and our wonderful faculty and staff for their creativity, hard work and dedication to our students. Thank you! Scholarships and Awards

BUSINESS ADVISORY COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIPS The Sentry School of Business and Economics Business Advisory Council (BAC) was formed to keep our programs relevant to the needs of regional organizations– our external stakeholders. The BAC members are the business leaders from various industries. The inaugural meeting was September 2011. Through the generous contributions of our BAC members listed on page 22, we are able to award scholarships to our talented students. CENTRAL WISCONSIN APARTMENT ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP The Central Wisconsin Apartment Association is composed of rental property owners, real estate professionals, and others who have an interest in meeting Central Wisconsin needs for rental housing. CENTRAL WISCONSIN BOARD OF REALTORS SCHOLARSHIP Real estate professionals Rudy Ottersen and Pat Cassidy established this endowment around the time of the UWSP Centennial. At that time the organization was called the Stevens Point Board of Realtors. Shortly after, the name was changed to Central Wisconsin Board of Realtors. Together with the Central Wisconsin Multiple Listing Service, the real estate professionals in our area support an accounting, business, or economics student who has a connection to the real estate profession. CLIFTONLARSONALLEN ACCOUNTING SCHOLARSHIP Clifton Gunderson was founded in 1960 in Peoria, Ill., as Clifton, Gunderson, Coker and DeBruyn. In 1973, its name was shortened to Clifton, Gunderson. Under a new name, it added firms in Colorado, Wisconsin, Missouri, Maryland, Arizona, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Texas, California, and Pennsylvania. Prior to the formation of Clifton Gunderson, young entrepreneurs Rholan Larson and John Allen started a small public accounting practice in the suburbs of Minneapolis in 1953. Bob Weishair joined the firm in 1957 to form Larson, Allen, Weishair & Co., LLP. The firm has since expanded throughout Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Florida, Massachusetts, Texas, Wisconsin, Washington DC, Washington, and Idaho. In 2007, the firm changed names to LarsonAllen LLP.

STEVE AND SHARI DAY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS INTERNSHIP SCHOLARSHIP After completing his associate degree at Gogebic Community College in Ironwood, Michigan, Steve Day transferred to Northern Michigan University in Marquette and received a bachelor’s degree. Even though his education was earned through the G.I. Bill, Steve applied for a veteran’s scholarship and was awarded for his two years at NMU. Steve was very grateful to have that additional money. Steve and Shari are pleased to be able to sponsor this scholarship at UWSP for a deserving veteran, drilling reservist or guardsman, or student. Also, the Day family views this scholarship as a tribute to Dr. Tom McCaig who was instrumental in establishing Steve’s philosophy on leadership and Dr. Bill Kirby who was very supportive and encouraging as Steve pursued his master’s degree. EXPANDING HORIZONS SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is made possible by Marcia Tepp and Gary Hetzer. Marcia studied abroad as a business student and had experiences that would have never happened at home. The scholarship provides business and economic majors with the opportunity to study outside of the United States in a foreign environment developing their awareness of other cultures and experiencing people of all countries. JEFFERY E AND SALLY A FIDDLER CPS SCHOLARSHIP Jeffery and Sally Fiddler had backgrounds in business and education. Sally Fiddler was grateful for the efforts of Dean Warren Jenkins with respect to her receiving her degree. If it weren’t for his efforts she would not have had the ability to finish her course work and obtain her degree. With that degree, she went to Chicago, where she met her husband, Jeffery, and where she spent many years in the Chicago educational system. This allowed her to make a difference in the lives of her students, just as Dean Warren Jenkins made a difference in her life. Jeffery Fiddler was a very successful person in the computer technology area. Their combined gift will support worthy UWSP students in perpetuity. W.B. GREATON SCHOLARSHIP Wilson B. (Bart) Greaton, Sr., was born and raised in New Richmond, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls before completing the La Salle correspondent course in accounting. He began a long affiliation with UWSP in 1956 when he was appointed dean of instruction, the number-two administrative post. The position later became Vice-Chancellor for academic affairs and he held it until returning to full-time teaching as a professor of economics in 1974. He served as acting president of the university several times. When Haferbecker moved from administration to teaching in 1974, the faculty established a scholarship to fund in his honor. Haferbecker passed away in December 1998. His wife, Darlene, survives. Although they were both fortunate to receive scholarships while attending UWSP, there were none available to part-time students, such as Trish, through the School of Business and Economics. As a sign of their appreciation to UWSP for helping in their professional success, they established this scholarship to help part-time, non-traditional students with financial need who have responsibilities outside of school that make their pursuit of education challenging. KEVIN AND JORDAN ILE SCHOLARSHIP Kevin and Jordan Ile first met on campus at UW-Stevens Point as freshmen in 2015. Both Kevin and Jordan chose UW-Stevens Point as a result of program reputations, the central location of the university, and the on-campus culture. Spending six years in the Stevens Point area earning bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees at UWSP, Kevin and Jordan made a number of connections with other students and faculty members that they’ve held close as they relocated outside the area to follow career opportunities. Because of these

17

meaningful connections and the impact UWSP has had on them personally and professionally, Kevin and Jordan were naturally encouraged to give back to students in need of additional financial support. CLIFF KING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Clifford “Cliff” King was a 1983 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point graduate and a passionate supporter of the university and Stevens Point community. Cliff strongly supported UW-Stevens Point in various ways including as a member of the Business Advisory Council. His efforts directly contributed to increasing the university’s prominence in the business community. Bob’s values, passion for learning, and endless pursuit of excellence exemplified during his tenure as managing director is what makes every person in their community hopeful that tomorrow will be better than yesterday.
