September is here, and it’s finally warming up nicely outside! This month is always nice around Naples because locals see it as the calm before the “storm.” Hopefully, I don’t jinx anything by saying the word “storm” … I’m simply referring to the snowbird season, which typically starts Oct. 15. September is historically the quietest time of year here in Naples because even the locals are usually traveling this month. This month is also the absolute best time for golf because you can essentially get a tee time on any course (using the PGA pass) at any time and pretty much have the entire place to yourself! We in the office also utilize this month to put the finishing touches on preparing for YOU to come back into town. One of the things we are constantly working on is refining our processes and procedures with the ultimate goal of providing the best overall customer experience possible for you! When I think about it, I can’t help but laugh. Having two kids and another one on the way, I’ve visited more doctors’ offices this year than I have in my entire life, and it never ceases to amaze me how little 99% of clinic staff actually care about you, the patient. Seriously, Jenni and I have a running bet on if the receptionist is going to greet us before they hand us a stack of paperwork and tell us to have a seat in the waiting room. Nobody smiles. No provider tells us their name. Nobody tells us what we are going to be charged for or what to expect. It’s simply get ‘em in and get ‘em out as fast as possible so they can get on to the next victim! It’s not that hard really to provide a service superior to others in this town. What I’ve found is that by simply calling people back and greeting them by their name when they walk in the door, we’re already light years ahead of 90% of other health care clinics in this town. In my office, we call it GAS, which stands for Give A Shit. It makes it really simple when training staff. All you have to do is give a shit. My common question to my staff is, “How would you handle this if it were your mom or your dad we were talking about?” Would you email your mom if you were really concerned about how her back pain is holding up, OR would you pick up the damn phone and actually call her? For some reason,
in the health care field, we think that it should be different because it’s a “professional” relationship.
Welp, not in my world! Each and every one of you who has trusted me and my team to assist you on your health care journey means the world to me! I know you have plenty of choices when it comes to your health care, most of which do, in fact, take your insurance and don’t charge nearly what we do. TASTY TURKEY MEATLOAF This turkey meatloaf is packed with flavor and protein, perfect for a family dinner or meal prep!
INGREDIENTS • 1 lb ground turkey • 1 onion, diced
• 2 tbsp ketchup • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 2 eggs • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley • Salt and pepper, to taste
• 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1/2 cup bread crumbs • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1. Preheat oven to 375 F and line a baking dish with parchment paper. 2. In a large bowl, combine turkey, onion, garlic, bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, eggs, parsley, salt, and pepper. 3. Form the mixture into a loaf shape and place it in the baking dish. 4. Bake for 45 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165 F. 5. Let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Let’s Talk Genetics
Genetics is a controversial topic but always interesting. We are made up of genes. A gene is a unit of heredity that is passed from a parent to an offspring, passing from one generation to the next. Genetics can often be blamed for diagnoses that really aren’t due to genetics. Certainly, we carry genes. We do, however, have the ability to turn genes on and off. Yes, that is right — if you have the “gene for high cholesterol,” you do NOT have to have high cholesterol. Genetics are not dictating your life. Your food, beverages, activities, and environment are dictating your life. Certainly, traits are “passed down,” though this is related to the similarities in dietary methods, stress response, environment, and internal factors such as vitamin deficiencies, nutrient deficiencies, and gut health from one generation to the next. My mentor always uses the example that carries the majority of the “obesity genes.” The majority of her family members are also obese. She is not. She is not obese because of her lifestyle. She has been determined to maintain proper gut health, the right foods and balance of macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats) for her body, proper vitamin levels, and stress response management. This is what keeps her “obesity genes” turned off and allows her to maintain a healthy weight. I have had many clients come in to tell me that their high cholesterol is genetic and it is never going
to get better. Through their history, we identify other inflammatory and autoimmune symptoms. Further, we identify their gut permeability (poor gut health) and the stimulating factors to this. With a lifestyle change of identifying the right foods for their body, the right blood sugar control with the proper intake of their food, optimizing their vitamin levels and stress hormone, their cholesterol values actually DECREASED and after a couple of months of healing NORMALIZED. They are always shocked. They have always believed there is nothing they can do for their cholesterol, and they will have to always take a statin medication — until we can prove to them that their cholesterol is actually inflammatory and not genetic. A similar story goes for many autoimmune diseases, weight concerns, and blood sugar issues such as pre-diabetes and Type II diabetes. We are utilizing 23andMe genetic testing to help analyze individuals at a deeper metabolic level. We have been able to utilize the result of this testing with deep analysis to identify the underlying stimulation for blood sugar instability, weight gain, gaining weight back after losing it, autoimmune disease, inflammation, and poor response to exercise. It is enlightening to see the culprit of some of these diagnoses and actually have answers on how to FIX the actual problem rather than just treating it with prescriptions.
