Letter PRESIDENT'S
Mark J. Sobeck Westmoreland Club President
Dear fellow Westmoreland Club Members, As I am writing this we are just coming out of a very rainy and cold Spring, and now I'm looking forward to a warmer, sunnier, summer filled with fun. With the warmer weather it’s a great time to enjoy lunch and dinner at the finest setting in Northeastern PA, the Porch. Chef Luke's food creations have been amazing, and we are getting compliments on them all the time. With the creative specials and incredible food there are many theme nights lined up on the Porch in the Summer months, many of which are highlighted throughout this newsletter.
I'd love to see more of you at the Friday night cocktail parties. We always get a nice turnout of members and guests. The food and drinks are always the best, and the price is very reasonable at only $15 for members and $20 for guests. It’s a great way to start off the evening, followed by a nice dinner on the Porch. Don't forget about the two upcoming events at the Gallo Family’s beautiful Harvey’s Lake home. The beach and Tiki Bar setting are perfect for our member parties. June 14th in the afternoon and August 2nd in the evening. Make your reservations early, as these will surely sell out. Recently we have seen sell outs on a few of our member events. Keep your eyes open on the event calendar and make your reservations early so you don’t miss out. Here's hoping we have a nice, long, warm, and sunny Summer.

Matthew Riviello Westmoreland Club General Manager Message GENERAL MANAGER’S
As we turn the calendar and look towards our Summer months, we continue to focus on Member Experience and member programming to enhance your membership at The Westmoreland Club. We are thrilled to announce that the Porch is now officially open for both lunch and dinner service! We plan to expand our daily offerings on the Porch continually . Starting in June, we will reintroduce several of our popular theme nights to enrich your experience on the Porch. Our Summer Brunch Series will begin on Sunday, June 1 with live entertainment, an all new brunch menu and all new summer cocktails on the Porch. Whether you are looking for a casual mid-morning meal or would like to sit at the Porch bar and enjoy a few cocktails, we will be open from 10 AM - 2 PM every Sunday. There is no better venue to enjoy exquisite food, hand crafted cocktails and live entertainment. st
Our Interactive Seafood Market returns on Friday, June 13th, and every Friday and Saturday throughout the summer. In addition to our weekly Seafood Market features we will have an interactive “market” where you can stop by and peruse the fresh seafood and pick out what you would like to eat from this “fish stand.” Thursday, June 12th marks the return of Tacos & Tequila Thursdays. Every week our menu will change and offer a variety of unique taco dishes that you will not find anywhere in the area. In conjunction with this, Alex Cruz has created a unique Tequila experience that will change weekly. Although we will begin this weekly series with Neil Nicastro, Tori V will return on June 19th for this extremely popular theme night feature. “Cruz The Club with Alex” launches June 11th. This all new series will follow Alex as he rotates through all of the Clubs bars and offers a spirit tasting and conversation about some fine spirits. Most of these spirits are not available in any restaurant or bar in Northeastern, PA. This is a great opportunity to spend time with one of the most talented and knowledgeable spirit and wine enthusiasts on the Eastern Seaboard. Date, times, and locations as well as which spirits Alex will be focusing on can be found in the content of the Newsletter. I would like to personally thank the Gallo Family as they are opening up their homes for the members for 2 events this year. Saturday, June 14th, from 12 PM - sunset; we will be hosting a Clambake at the Tiki Bar. Join us for an enjoyable day filled with delicious seafood, poker tables, cigar smoking, and of course, a tiki bar, all with a stunning view of Harvey’s Lake. We will return to the Tiki Bar for our annual Tiki Bar event on Saturday, August 2nd. This year we will have a pig roast in addition to other amazing Chef Luke inspired dishes. There will be live entertainment, an amazing dinner, and of course the bar will be open all evening. As most of you already know we have made a minor switch to our annual July Summer Member party. This year we will celebrate all of our members. The evening will start off with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the 1st floor of the Clubhouse, followed by a served meal on The Courtyard. After that, we will have entertainment in all areas of The Clubhouse for everyone to enjoy. There will be plenty of fun all over your Club for what promises to be an amazing party. DID I MENTION - Premium OPEN Bar all evening!!!
Have you heard? The Westmoreland Club has a wine cellar. In the basement of the Club, we have a location that is unlike any other in the Club. The room was designed to stock all of our wines that we currently serve at The Club. With this being said, we are going to begin to offer an experience like no other. We are going to open up your wine cellar for special events and meals. More details soon!

MEET THE FOUNDERS
Robert Bruce Ricketts (1839-1918) On April 29, 1839, Robert Bruce Ricketts was born near Orangeville, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Elijah and Marjorie Lockhart Ricketts. His grandfather, Edward Ricketts, was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, serving as a Lieutenant in the Pennsylvania Militia. Having been educated at Wyoming Seminary, Ricketts was studying law in Wilkes-Barre and preparing for Yale when the Civil War broke out in 1861. In June, 1861, he enlisted in Battery F, 1 Pennsylvania Artillery (43 Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers) for three years. By August, 1861, Ricketts has been commissioned First Lieutenant. st rd Originally attached to the 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac, Battery F was transferred to the 1st Corps in early 1862, and Lieutenant Ricketts was named commander. Thereafter, Battery F would be known as “Ricketts Battery.” Small in stature, Lieutenant Ricketts was known by the nickname “Runt Ricketts.”
Promoted to Captain in May, 1863, he led Battery F and a two gun section of Battery G into the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863. A part of the Reserve Artillery Corps under Chief of Artillery, Brigadier General Henry Hunt, combined Battery F & G was posted to East Cemetery Hill in relief of Cooper’s Battery B about 4 PM on July 2. In this position east of the Baltimore Pike, the Battery was attacked by the Louisiana Tigers of Brigadier General Harry Hays Confederate Brigade around 7 PM. With its infantry support and Weidrich’s New York Battery on his left overrun, Ricketts men fought the charging Tigers in hand to hand combat until relieves by the counterattack of Colonel Samuel Carrol’s 2 Corps Brigade. The stubborn defense of East Cemetery Hill by Battery F & G until relief arrived prevented the Confederates from capturing the Baltimore Pike and splitting the Federal line in two. nd Mustered out of service as colonel and commander of the First Pennsylvania Artillery June 5, 1865, Ricketts returned to Wilkes-Barre where on October 1, 1868 he married Elizabeth Reynolds, daughter of William C. Reynolds, an early coal operator in the Wyoming Valley. They resided in half of a double house on South River Street (now Rifkin Hall of Wilkes University). Having inherited large tracts of timber land from his father, Colonel Ricketts continued to amass large holdings leading to the successful timber business he established and operated until his death. Part of these large holdings have evolved into the State Park bearing the Ricketts name today. During his tenure of ownership, he converted an old stone stagecoach stop at Lake Ganoga on the Tioga Turnpike at North Mountain into a summer residence. After celebrating his 50 wedding anniversary at their beloved Ganoga on October 1, 1918, Robert Bruce Ricketts unexpectedly died on November 13. Stricken with grief, Elizabeth Ricketts returned to Wilkes-Barre where she died on November 19, 1918. Colonel and Mrs. Ricketts were buried in a private family cemetery at the Ganoga estate. th Colonel Ricketts was active in veterans affairs with Conyngham Post Grand Army of the Republic and the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States as well as the Pennsylvania Gettsburg Military Commission. A member of the Wyoming Historical & Geological Society, Robert Bruce Ricketts was the first vice-president of the Board of the Westmoreland Club.
A PIECE OF HISTORY
WESTMORELAND CLUB PORTRAITS
Luzerne County Historical Society Collection Oil on Canvas One of the ten children of Jonathan and Ruth Tripp Slocum, Frances was five years old at the time she was taken into captivity on her father’s farm located at the present intersection of North Pennsylvania Avenue and East Union Street in Wilkes-Barre by a roving band of Delaware Indians on November 2, 1778. Taken to upstate New York, she was adopted by an Indian family in the Delaware tribe. The family first relocated to Ohio and finally settled in Indiana. Frances married a chief of the Miami tribe, Shepancanah, and settled in the Osage village where she raised two sons and two daughters on the banks of the Mississinewa River. Her family continued to search for the “Lost Daughter of Wyoming” when in 1837, her brother, Joseph Slocum, learned through an article in a Lancaster newspaper of a white woman living among the Miami’s who gave details of her capture. Joseph and his brother, Isaac, went to Indiana where they met with Frances. Despite all of the entreaties of her family to return with them to Wilkes-Barre, Frances chose to remain with her children and grandchildren where she died on March 9, 1847. Westmoreland Club FFWS Trip to Martha’s Vineyard October 2-6, 2024 Attendees: Peter Butera, Paul Lumia, Jim Shoemaker, Bill Spencer, Mike Weaver, and Jeff Wertz. For our 2024 trip, we rented a charming home from Hal Flack on the serene island of Chappaquiddick. Each day, we took the ferry—famously featured in the movie Jaws—from our rental to Martha’s Vineyard to meet our guides and embark on three days of fly fishing. We had the pleasure of fishing with three different guides, each with a unique boat. Two of us fished per boat, switching both boats and guides each day. Our catches included striped bass, false albacore, and bonito. The weather was ideal, and our rental home offered both comfort and character. Every meal, whether prepared at home or enjoyed at local restaurants, was a treat. Chef Spencer outdid himself with a delicious spaghetti and meatballs dinner one evening. Though the fishing was a bit slow, the breathtaking scenery on the water made up for it. Above all, the camaraderie among the six of us made this trip truly unforgettable. -Peter Butera, Fly Fishing & Wing Shooting Club Chair

Mary & Hunter McGrane Est. November 9, 2024
“After touring the Westmoreland Club, it was abundantly clear we needed to host our wedding here. There's a certain charm and character that makes the Club a perfect canvas for moody pictures, cordial conversations and enduring memories. In addition to the atmosphere, the staff welcomed us with open arms and made us feel like we’d been members for years. We felt their genuine excitement for us, and everyone was ready to accommodate us and our guest’s needs. While our special day was quite a whirlwind from beginning to end, we could talk for days regarding the details, interactions and emotions we experienced. Some of our favorite memories include our first look out front, tearing up the dance floor, little moments to ourselves and saying “I do”! As for some personal favorites, Mary still reminisces about the 40” disco ball and Hunter spawns goosebumps looking at wedding photos on the main staircase. We wouldn’t change a single detail. We’d like to thank the staff, our vendors, our friends and our families for helping execute our vision. We wouldn’t have such wonderful memories without each one of you. Cheers!” - Hunter & Mary McGrane

"On October 26, 2024, Westmoreland Club members David Ziegler and Dr. Kathleen Bannerman celebrated their wedding day with an evening in the ballroom they will cherish forever! Friends and family travelled from Canada and surrounding states to join the happy couple on that momentous day. We wish David and Kathleen a lifetime of love and happiness!"
“ Katrina Wallace and Christopher Russell got engaged December 6, 2024. There was no better time as the Christmas season is Katrina’s favorite. The couple spent the day at the Christmas market in Bethlehem. From there the proceeded to a wonderful dinner, and a horse drawn carriage ride all throughout downtown Bethlehem. The carriage ride came to a close and as always Katrina wanted a picture. In that moment Chris dropped to his knee and popped the question. It was truly the most magical moment. The couple has made plans to get married on April 11 2026 at the Legacy Castle in Pompton Plains New Jersey.“

BOOTE PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS
Recently, I had the honor of photographing a styled editorial inside Westmoreland Club’s breathtaking Grand Hall. Stepping into that space was more than just a creative opportunity, it was a powerful reminder of what’s possible here in Northeast Pennsylvania. You know when you’re having a “white glove” experience. Like walking into a five-star restaurant, you feel it in the weight of the flawlessly polished glassware, in the perfectly timed hospitality, down to the quiet grace of the drink service. Understanding what makes an experience truly unforgettable isn’t lost on me and it’s something I strive to infuse into my work here in Northeast PA’s wedding industry. The Westmoreland has always embodied timeless sophistication, but what struck me most during this shoot was how effortlessly the space lent itself to the kind of elevated experience often associated with far-off destinations. It reaffirmed something I believe wholeheartedly, our region deserves beauty, intention, and celebration on a world-class level. This shoot was designed to do more than showcase aesthetic sand convey emotion through design and editorial portraiture; it was meant to inspire our local creative industry to raise the bar. To think bigger than what’s been done. To infuse our events with meaning, emotion, and a sense of legacy. Whether it’s a wedding, a private event, or a creative collaboration, moments like these can become once-in-a-lifetime memories when approached with care, vision, and excellence. Our culture here is rich with story and heart. My vision for this shoot was to spark inspiration, to create an energy around celebration that goes beyond tired trends, and instead welcomes a warm, romantic atmosphere that envelopes our designs and sets the stage for core memories and legacy moments to unfold. I’m so grateful to be part of this creative community and to The Westmoreland for providing a space that allows us to dream bigger and explore what’s truly possible. - Brittany Boote

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ide are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Alistair Randolph Ide, on the eighth of February, in Massachusetts.
The detachment's role delivers a 47-person medical element capable of operating in a contaminated environment. The members triage victims, treat injuries and track patients - ultimately preparing casualties for a transfer to a medical facility. An Army National Guard component provides search and extraction for living causalities, while the 182nd Force Support Squadron provides an 11-person Fatality Search and Recovery Team with the ability to remove deceased victims. Dr. Neale completed Officer Training School in Montgomery, Alabama in Jan 2025.

FOOD & BEVERAGE THE DOWNTOWN GRILLE
UP IN SMOKE: SWEET AND SPICY “The combinations of sweet, spicy, and smoky are dominating the flavor trend predictions of 2025,” according to Tastewise. From cooking techniques that implement smoky flavors, to the utilization of hot honey and other sweet and spicy condiments, the year of 2025 will bring out boldness amongst restaurant menu creations. According to the latest consumer reports from The Michelin Guide, restaurant diners are seeking nostalgia in the form of flame-cooked flavors. After research, one Michelin inspector states: “Diners prefer the traditional smoky flavors of grilling or stir-frying over an open flame to the effects of electric cooking methods.” Executive Chef Luke and the Westmoreland Club culinary team have composed a most recent edition of The Downtown Grille menu, featuring an incredible selection of flame grilled favorites from Westmoreland Club Prime, along with other enticing entrées fit for the 2025 trend, such as the Chipotle Seared Shrimp & Scallops, pictured above. SUMMER REFRESH Chipotle Seared Shrimp & Scallops: coriander spiced parsnip purée, roasted winter squash, pancetta crisp, chipotle honey drizzle, blood orange

COCKTAIL CORNER
Classics: Revitalized Amongst the top trends for 2025 Summer cocktails lies the implication of simplicity, quality, and revitalization. Following the “less is more” trend, mixologists are curating classic cocktails that not only feature higher quality, premium spirits, but less ingredients, with a primary focus lying specifically on emphasis in flavor. (Indulge in a Mezcal Orange Crush from the latest Downtown Grille menu, and thank us later.) Flower Power In line with quality ingredients, plant-based inclusions are making their way into popularity throughout the mixology scene. According to sources, “expect more cocktails to feature edible flowers and herbs, adding both flavor and visual appeal.”
