However, the tune aptl y su mm arizes a conventional career path that has m aintained a drain brain awa y fro m s m all co mm unities. The range of career opportunities in this region was highlighted during the recent Career Fair at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Insti- tute.

Speakers provided insight into jobs such as auto m echanic, plu m ber, veterinarian, chiropractor, graphic designer, m usician, m achinist, welder, soldier, police officer, nurse, civil engineer, chef, and personal trainer. “This event is an i m portant step in the decision- m aking process for students to choose their career,” said Grand y . High school students face a great m an y pressures and con- cerns; one of their biggest challenges is the need to choose what is to beco m e their career path. “We are sure that this event will offer students a significant opportunit y to be e x posed to and to beco m e e x cited about what our co mm unit y leaders do on a dail y basis.” Teachers and parents worked together to bring this activit y to fruition. “We developed a d y na m ic schedule for the da y with 20 diverse occupations represented b y talented people fro m our lo- cal co mm unit y ,” said Brian McCor m ick, the chair m an of the group. “It was a challenging task but a s m all group of dedicated parents worked alongside an i m pressive tea m of teachers and school staff m e m bers to put together a da y that showcased m an y of the jobs that are available to our students.” “It was a d y na m ic and e x citing for m at where we worked together to encourage our y oung adults to e x plore a variet y of career choices in order to help the m gain a bit of perspective on all the wonderful opportunities that are avail- able right here in our own co mm unities,” said the organizers. “One of the goals of the event was to de m onstrate to students that the y can co m e back here and find jobs in their chosen fields,” noted Gra y . “Whether students want to apprentice, go to college or univer- sit y , or enter the work force, all of those opportunities were repre- sented here,” said VCI Principal Angela Grand y .
