Stemming the brain drain Several of the approximately 20 speakers were VCI graduates, noted Yvette Gray, one of the volunteers who organized the ses- sions for the grades 9 to 12 students. Many young people do not return after they have left their home towns to pursue a post-secondary education.

Richard.mahoney@eap.on .ca VANKLEEK HILL | “How are you going to keep them down on the farm after they have seen Paris?” It is a song that few high school students today could relate to. However, the tune aptly summarizes a conventional career path that has maintained a drain brain away from small communities. The range of career opportunities in this region was highlighted during the recent Career Fair at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Insti- tute.

Speakers provided insight into jobs such as auto mechanic, plumber, veterinarian, chiropractor, graphic designer, musician, machinist, welder, soldier, police officer, nurse, civil engineer, chef, and personal trainer. “This event is an important step in the decision-making process for students to choose their career,” said Grandy. High school students face a great many pressures and con- cerns; one of their biggest challenges is the need to choose what is to become their career path. “We are sure that this event will offer students a significant opportunity to be exposed to and to become excited about what our community leaders do on a daily basis.” Teachers and parents worked together to bring this activity to fruition. “We developed a dynamic schedule for the day with 20 diverse occupations represented by talented people from our lo- cal community,” said Brian McCormick, the chairman of the group. “It was a challenging task but a small group of dedicated parents worked alongside an impressive team of teachers and school staff members to put together a day that showcased many of the jobs that are available to our students.” “It was a dynamic and exciting format where we worked together to encourage our young adults to explore a variety of career choices in order to help them gain a bit of perspective on all the wonderful opportunities that are avail- able right here in our own communities,” said the organizers. “One of the goals of the event was to demonstrate to students that they can come back here and find jobs in their chosen fields,” noted Gray. “Whether students want to apprentice, go to college or univer- sity, or enter the work force, all of those opportunities were repre- sented here,” said VCI Principal Angela Grandy.
