Big PGW site deal who envisaged a m ulti-faceted co mm er- cial develop m ent on the propert y , which includes the 404,000-square-foot PGW building.

HAWKESBURY | The town of Hawkesbury might get an early Christmas present in the form of a major real estate transac- tion. Asco Construction hopes to finalize b y the third week of Dece m ber its purchase of the for m er Pittsburgh Glass Works wind- shield factor y site on Duplate Street. Asco Construction President Anthon y Assal y confir m ed this week that his fir m is in the process of acquiring the 60-acre site. The local co m pan y has no specific use for the propert y in m ind right now. “We hope to find a tenant who will create jobs,” he said. Develop m ent of the site located north of Count y Road 17 would be a boon for the m unicipalit y . The propert y has been idle since the for- m er Duplate plant closed in 2009. In August, town council had given its ap- proval in principle to a Québec developer richard.mahoney@eap.on.ca VANKLEEK HILL | While there have been many views expressed about a proposed ad- diction treatment centre in Vankleek Hill, there is no question that there is a need for such a facility in the district. A residential progra m for people with sub- stance abuse proble m s is one of the ‘’ m an y big needs in this region,” sa y s Dr. Suzanne Filion, director of the Addiction Services of Eastern Ontario in Prescott-Russell. The area has tradi- tionall y lacked a wide range of addiction pro- gra m s, the ps y chologist noted. “There is a big gap” when it co m es to helping those with addic- tion proble m s, Filion reiterated. “The lack of a residential treat m ent is one of those gaps.” The agenc y is not associated with La Fondation de l’ange gardien , a privatel y -funded organiza- tion which had proposed opening an addiction centre in the for m er Vankleek Hill convent. “We have not had a chance y et to look at their m odel of treat m ent,” Filion said. Currentl y , to receive residential treat m ent for substance abuse, people in this district m ust travel to centres in Ottawa or Montréal. So m e have gone as far as North Ba y and Hearst for as- sistance, observed Hawkesbur y Ontario Provin- cial Police detach m ent spokes m an Constable Pierre Dubois. The detach m ent’s co mm unit y services officer was one of the few who e x - pressed support for the centre proposal at a re- cent infor m ation m eeting. There is little evidence to back up clai m s b y

The propert y is situated west of the Wal m art store and stretches all the wa y to McGill Street. The closure of the PGW operation in No- ve m ber, 2009 left about 190 people with- out jobs. Once known as PPG Canada, the op- eration was shut b y the Pittsburgh-based Pittsburgh Glass Works as part of a restruc- turing of the co m pan y . The factor y was constructed in 1968 and began production under the na m e of Du- plate in 1969. At one point, the operation e m plo y ed as m an y as 600 people on its three production lines. At the ti m e of its closure, the plant paid $256,000 for water and sewage services. In ter m s of ta x dollars, the town lost $77,000, school boards $48,000 and the united counties of Prescott-Russell $36,000.
