Letter from the Editor “If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it. Anything you want to, do it; want to change the world... there’s nothing to it.” -- Willy Wonka
So, I reached out to Genevieve Kroeker, the world-class, award- winning chocolatier behind Seed Confections (located at 159 Ross St., St. Thomas) and together, we created something very special: the Seeds for Change chocolate bar. It’s a sesame snap base topped with toffee and coated in rich chocolate. A truly unique and delightful treat! These limited-edition bars will be sold at Seed Confections for $8 each, with 100% of proceeds going to the St. Thomas Elgin Food Bank.
Two things my family and friends have come to expect to hear from me are: “I had the weirdest dream!” and, “I have an idea — let me know what you think.” Well, my friends … I’ve had an idea. Let me know what you think.
FOR AS LITTLE AS $1 P Recently, I was trying to find a way to help a local business whose owner has been struggling with her health. Naturally, that’s affected her business too. I wanted to do something meaningful, something that would lift her up, and maybe lift others too. Then it hit me: I could invest in her business. Personally, I think it’s a sweet idea — literally and figuratively. I get to support a local business doing amazing things, you get to enjoy something delicious, and together we make a meaningful difference right here in our community. Hence the name: Seeds for Change. Sow something sweet, grow something great.
A huge thank you to Gen for making this dream a reality. I hope you’ll pop into Seed Confections (open Wednesday to Friday, 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday, 10 am to 3 pm) to grab a Seeds for Change bar, and while you’re there, check out her incredible macarons, chocolates, and ice cream (from her husband’s company, Decent Ice Cream). Working together, we can make a difference, one chocolate bar at a time.
Now, before you think I’ve gone full Dragon’s Den, no; I’m not buying shares. But I wanted to infuse her business with support in a way that could grow. And what do I get for my investment? Chocolate. That’s right, delicious, handmade, top-quality chocolate. But as much as I love chocolate, I didn’t want to keep it all for myself. That’s when the second idea hit. What if I sold the chocolate, and donated all the proceeds to the food bank? That way, my support of the business could multiply into something even greater. Everybody wins!

50 Years and Counting of Monsignor Morrison Catholic School by Peri Hayes Emily Butler, Monsignor Morrison Catholic School Principal, began her teaching career in 2002: “I was fortunate to be able to secure a position with the London District Catholic School Board in 2004, and taught for many years at Assumption in Aylmer. In 2012, I accepted a position in our Learning Services Department working in numeracy and Monsignor Morrison was one of the schools that I supported. After serving as an Administrator at St. Francis, St. Theresa and Sir Arthur Carty in London, I was thrilled to return to my home community to serve as Principal at Monsignor Morrison in 2023! I strive to support my staff in creating a school culture in which every child feels seen, heard, valued and included. I want students to reach their potential as they develop academically, socially and spiritually in a faith-filled learning environment. My goal is that everyone at Morrison feels safe and loved.” Along with unique extracurricular opportunities to promote belonging, Emily offers meaningful history about this educational space: “Many of our staff attended school here at Morrison, and these classrooms are filled with cherished memories where lifelong friendships were formed. It is where many of us were first inspired by our incredible teachers to consider pursuing careers in education. We are blessed to still have Sr. Mary Boere, a former teacher of ours, visiting our school regularly and supporting us in our faith journey.”
school is an incredibly special place, and I am excited to provide the community with a chance to walk down memory lane.” The community is celebrating this milestone with a family- friendly Open House, which will welcome members of the community to gather and visit with past connections, tour their former classrooms and explore what has changed at Morrison since their childhood. While describing the property’s evolution, Emily details, “When the school was built in 1975, it was an open concept school.” Also at this celebration will be the school’s Spirit Singers’ performance and flavourful food truck options, with Dotsy’s Entertainment featuring balloon twisters and face painting. For those seeking further information, the ‘50th Anniversary Monsignor Morrison’ Facebook Event Page has been delightedly developed to promote their 50th anniversary festivities. Further regarding the nostalgia being honoured at Monsignor Morrison Catholic School, vintage logo shirts are being sold for sporting fashion from days gone by. Emily graciously concludes, “Anyone that is interested in purchasing our vintage logo can order online through ‘School Cash Online’, and pick- up their orders at the school: ldcsb.schoolcashonline.com/ Fee/Details/75537/183/False/True.”
About Monsignor Morrison’s upcoming 50th anniversary, Emily enthuses, “The Morrison community has always been a tight- knight family. I am excited for past students and staff to come back and feel that the family atmosphere still truly remains. This

CVD Photography Celebrates 10 Years in Business by Peri Hayes This June 1st is the 10-year anniversary of Candice Van Diepen’s CVD Photography, who had been photographing loved ones for about two years when she began being referred. Candice then decided to visit the Small Business Resource Centre and utilize guidance through their appreciated program. CVD Event Studio offers photography services for real estate and personal projects, as well as specializing in iGUIDE — a Canadian-owned company offering an interactive 3-D virtual tour system for any space — which Candice has been involved with as a Distributor for about eight years. Owning the required equipment, she is able to create detailed maps and floor plans with exact measurements; evidently resourceful for construction, insurance and predominantly real estate in Candice’s experience. She reveals the ways in which virtual tours increased in popularity during COVID-19: “When I started my company ten years ago, I went to the Small Business Resource Centre as an Event Planner and a Photographer. I had this vision of offering both, however, business coaches encouraged me to pick one. I felt like I was constantly in this tug of war until the pandemic when the real estate portion of my company excelled and grew.” In recent years, Candice moved her office space to her home, working often within the community and bringing her photography on-site. This entrepreneur proudly serves St. Thomas and London area, along with exploring further opportunities per client request. CVD Photography generally books a minimum of one week in advance. Asked what excites Candice about her business, she radiates, “For me, it’s always been a passion about capturing a moment and giving that to somebody; being able to give people that lasting memory of a moment in time to be treasured. More on the family side of my business, life is precious. Sometimes photos are the connection to the world, and this is the part where I do my job.” As a sponsor for the Business After 5 with the Chamber of Commerce this June 18th, Candice is looking forward
to collaborating with the Elgin County Railway Museum, along with Mary and James Meadows of Catering by James Meadows. “The Chamber of Commerce have been huge business supporters, and it has always been a goal of mine to host one of their events.” Candice thoughtfully expresses, “I wish to share a special thank you to the Small Business Resource Centre for my beginnings, being available for advice and support. They’ve been instrumental in what they do. To my clients, thank you for being with me for my ten years growing in business.” Follow CVD Photography on Facebook and Instagram, as well as explore the cvdphotography.ca website for further information. Candice will be facilitating a draw through the aforementioned Facebook page in honour of ten beloved years in business.

From There to Here: Newcomers to St. Thomas Welcome to a new monthly series where we get to know people who’ve recently made St. Thomas their home. This month, meet the House family. When Diana House and her husband Jeff first bought a home in St. Thomas, moving there was the last thing on their minds. “We actually bought a house in St. Thomas off an Instagram post,” Diana says. “It was meant to be a rental — we were just doing a lipstick renovation.” But when another opportunity arose in London, the family made a surprising decision: “My husband said the only way it makes sense is if we sell our house in London and move to the rental. I thought, never in a million years would we move to St. Thomas — but let’s do it.” Jeff and Diana made the move in 2021 during the pandemic, with plans to stay just 12 months. But then life took an unexpected turn: “I was pregnant, and we ended up landing the deal to develop the Talbot and First Plaza, which was totally unrelated to our move, and definitely not part of any master plan.” Suddenly, their work and life shifted permanently to St. Thomas. They’ve grown to love the community and the lifestyle. “It takes eight minutes to get anywhere. We’re obsessed with Wildflowers Farm; we love the hikes at Springwater, and we spend a lot of time walking the paths in Lake Margaret,” Diana shares. “There are all these hidden gems here. It’s a best-kept secret lifestyle.” Diana also praises the small-town charm blended with elevated experiences: “Grassroots and Quay Du Vin Winery (now Sky Chase Estate Winery) are better than anything in London. And Clovermead in Aylmer is incredible for families.” As a developer and entrepreneur, Diana says St. Thomas has been one of the best municipalities to work with. “We built the Talbot and First Plaza during the pandemic, and it couldn’t have gone smoother. Mayor Preston and the city were unbelievable to work with. Same with the high-rise, it’s been night and day compared to other municipalities.”
She and Jeff are behind The Highlands, a high-end rental project next to Talbot and First. “We wanted to bring a Toronto- calibre living space to St. Thomas that’s still accessible. You can walk to Starbucks, doctors, a pharmacy, groceries, and restaurants. It’s like small-town living, elevated.” Though they originally planned to return to London, Diana says they’ve deferred building on their lot in Lambeth. “We’ve really, really enjoyed living in St. Thomas. It just feels like we were meant to be here.”

Meet Me at the Market The Horton Market is now in full swing, and every Saturday from 8 am to noon, 10 Manitoba Street becomes the heart of local flavour and flair. You’ll find farm-fresh produce, handmade goods, and small-batch treats from passionate vendors from across the community. Bonus — on the first Saturday of each month, you can even get your knives sharpened! Let’s meet two of the friendly faces bringing their unique offerings to the market. Palmer’s Maple Syrup Brian Palmer is the third generation in a family rooted in the maple syrup business, though with his sons Cole and Christopher now involved, they’re officially into the fourth. Alongside his wife Laura, Brian runs Palmer’s Maple Syrup, a staple at the Horton Market for decades. “We started back in ’55,” Brian says.
Paterson Woodcrafts Adam Paterson of Paterson Woodcrafts discovered his love for woodworking in high school, but it was moving to St. Thomas that truly sparked his creative journey. “When I bought my house, it had a shop in it,” he says. “That’s when I started experimenting with different woods and techniques. I just love transforming raw wood into something beautiful.” Adam creates a wide range of handmade pieces, including keepsake boxes, charcuterie boards, lazy Susans, tealight holders, and even wooden whistles. “Each piece is unique,” he explains. “I mostly use Canadian woods — maple, walnut, cherry, but I also like to incorporate reclaimed wood and exotic accents when I can.” Paterson Woodcrafts is a newer presence at the Horton Market, but Adam is no stranger to the atmosphere. “I’ve always loved attending. The focus on local and handmade items really spoke to me,” he says. “This market feels like home; it’s the perfect place to showcase my work and meet people who care about community.” His most popular pieces so far?
Palmer’s syrup is made from 6,000 taps and is sold exclusively from their own production. “I strive for the best syrup around,” Brian explains. “It’s a passion, not a job.” You can taste that passion in every drop of his amber and dark maple
Keepsake boxes and cutting boards. But every item on his table is made with the same care and attention that makes Paterson Woodcrafts a must- visit at the market.
syrup, which comes in a range of sizes and containers — plastic, tin, glass, even fancy gift bottles. He also offers maple tea and sweet maple candies. Brian’s connection to the market runs deep. “My grandfather went, my dad took me 50 years ago, and now I’m here,” he says. “Saturday mornings at the Horton Market have been part of my life for as long as I can remember.”

Together, We Transformed Tomorrow When a Community Comes Together, Incredible Things Happen by the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation There are moments in a community’s story when everything changes. For St. Thomas and Elgin County, the Transforming Tomorrow – Diagnostic Imaging Campaign was one of these moments. What began as a vision to improve access to diagnostic care became a movement — a movement powered by love, driven by purpose, and united by hope. It was about more than a machine. It was about making sure no one we care about has to travel far when they need answers. It was about honouring the stories that brought us here, and turning that momentum into lasting impact — so more people can access the care they need, right here at home. Thanks to 1,635 donors, 180 volunteers, 19 community events, and a community that never gave up, we didn’t just reach our $8 million campaign goal, we surpassed it. Together, we raised $8,921,173, bringing advanced diagnostic imaging and our communities first-ever Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to
“From the support of local businesses to kids’ lemonade stands, every act of generosity helped transform local healthcare,” Jeff shares. “This campaign wasn’t just about technology — it was about coming together.” And come together we did. Vera’s Why: A Mother’s Love, A Lasting Legacy For Vera Warren, the campaign is deeply personal: her son, Tyler, underwent more than 60 MRI scans during his cancer journey, each one requiring long drives to other cities. The
St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH). Today, lives are being changed because of it. Jeff’s Leadership: From Vision to Victory
At the helm of the campaign stood Jeff Yurek, whose leadership helped shape the vision and spark community-wide action. Jeff Yurek, former Member of Provincial Parliament for Elgin– Middlesex–London, had long championed healthcare access during his time in office. When he stepped into the role of Campaign Chair, he brought energy, experience, and heart.

care, bringing greater comfort, peace of mind, and a better healthcare experience right here at home. Grateful patient Rosalie put it best: “There are no words other than ‘life-changing’ to describe that experience. I didn’t have to travel far; I had answers quickly. And I was cared for by familiar, kind faces. It felt truly world-class.” Thank You for Believing The Transforming Tomorrow -- Diagnostic Imaging Campaign was built on commitment, compassion, and a belief in something better. It was our community’s way of saying: we deserve access to excellent care close to home, when it matters most. Because of you, STEGH’s Diagnostic Imaging Department has been transformed, delivering faster diagnoses, shorter wait times, and better care closer to home. Because of Jeff. Because of Vera. Because of every volunteer and every donor. We’ve proven what’s possible.
physical toll was hard. The emotional toll was harder. After Tyler passed, Vera knew something had to change. “We did everything we could to be there for Tyler — every appointment, every scan,” Vera shares. “But the travel was exhausting. If MRI had been available here, it would have meant more time together. Less stress. More comfort.” As the Transforming Tomorrow – Diagnostic Imaging Campaign Ambassador, Vera bravely shared Tyler’s story; his courage, his kindness, and his drive to make a difference. Her voice became a rallying cry for families across St. Thomas and Elgin County. Because of Vera’s advocacy, more people understood what this campaign meant and why it mattered. A Community Answering the Call Over two years, volunteers gave tirelessly, serving on committees, organizing events, and spreading the word. The campaign was supported by everyone from longtime donors to first-time contributors. A special thank you to FDC Foundation, whose $1 Million Matching Gift Campaign inspired our community to give generously, knowing their impact would be doubled. Their belief in this vision, and in the power of local healthcare, helped make advanced diagnostic imaging a reality at STEGH. People gave because they believed. They gave because they cared. They gave because someone they love might one day need this care. Today, thanks to our community, patients are getting answers sooner, right here at STEGH, surrounded by care they know and trust. Now, more than 5,000 people each year no longer need to leave town for excellent diagnostic imaging

Andrew Lawton, Elected MP by Peri Hayes
Andrew Lawton is a former Broadcaster and Journalist, about which he shares, “I used to work at 980 CFPL in London, broadcasting over the region. From 2018 to 2024, I was working for a national organization called True North, and I also wrote two best-selling books.” Both of these works are journalistic pieces, detailing The Freedom Convoy protest in Ottawa and the response to this; the second being a biography about Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre, released in May of 2024. Asked about what led to his journey in politics, Andrew responds, “I have always been interested in politics, going back to when I was a teenager. In my media career, I was talking and writing about politics. With the direction that the country was headed in, I was feeling more frustrated and couldn’t see myself watching this election from the sidelines. Instead of just talking about things, I wanted to help bring forward the solutions that the country and the riding need. I decided that it was time to hang up the headphones, and head to the House of Commons.” With the Conservative Party of Canada, Andrew is MP for Elgin—St. Thomas—London South: “One of the big things that I think is really important to our riding is that we have a lot of variety and diversity, both rural and suburban. St. Thomas, for example, has grown and has such a thriving business community. I appreciate that government policy affects everyone differently, and I want to ensure that no one is being left behind.”

As Andrew proceeds to offer, “Then there is the uncertainty with tariffs, trade with the United States, the affordability crisis and crime -- these are national issues that we feel at home that I want to advance solutions for as a local representative and advocate to help deliver that support.” While describing his goals, Andrew voices, “One of the things that I loved about the campaign was meeting people from morning to night, learning about who they are and the businesses that they run. I got to learn about people’s priorities, and the challenges they face. I love that I now get to make that part of my job, speaking to the wonderful people of this community and uncovering what we can do to succeed and thrive. I love meeting people and asking questions -- that is what led me to journalism and now I get to do this as a politician.” To conclude, Andrew declares, “My first jobs were in hospitality and customer service. Those values are still important to me, now more than ever. Being a constituency representative is the most important part of my role. Regardless of how anyone votes, my job is to support and serve everyone. We are going to work hard for every person in this riding, and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone around the community.”

How Dougie Wuggy’s is Spicing Up St. Thomas BBQs For Doug Carey, owner of Dougie Wuggy’s Barbecue, crafting BBQ sauce isn’t just a business — it’s a passion that’s been simmering for years. “Born and raised in St. Thomas, I spent a bit of time in Toronto before returning home,” Doug says. “The barbecue sauce business really started as a hobby.” That hobby grew from backyard experimentation. “I grew up on a propane barbecue — the crispier and blacker the burger, the better,” he laughs. “About 15 years ago, charcoal started making a comeback. I made a lot of mistakes — my family was very patient. They’d smile and say, ‘Oh yeah, that’s really good,’ while discreetly tucking it into a napkin.” As his skills with the smoker improved, friends and neighbours started asking about the sauce on his ribs. “That was the turning point. I had the meat down — beautiful ribs, four or five hours on the smoker — but the sauce was always store- bought. I started experimenting.” Encouraged by positive feedback, Doug decided to give it a shot. With support from the Elgin Business Resource Centre and guidance from the Foodpreneur program, he navigated food safety regulations, earned his food handler’s certificate, and secured a production kitchen at Seed Confections. Dougie Wuggy’s debuted at the Horton Market during the July long weekend last year. “I remember saying to my wife, ‘Nobody’s going to buy this. What am I doing here?’ But as soon as people started sampling, I knew I had something.”
Doug’s current line-up includes his Original Kansas City-style sauce, Honey Garlic (featuring local honey and garlic from Mazak Farms), and a whiskey-infused BBQ sauce using Forty Creek. “To me, supporting local is very important,” he says. There’s also a sauce made with Caps Off Brewing Co.’s Paddy Wagon red ale. “That one’s my current favourite,” says Doug, “Though my daughter puts the whiskey BBQ on everything — even sandwiches and homemade pizzas.” Dougie Wuggy’s sauces are available online, at the Horton Market, and in a few unexpected spots — including the farm store at Mazak and the front counter of CrossFit Elgin. Doug would like to acknowledge great assistance from his neighbour and good friend Chris Aubry. “We were neighbours and started experimenting with the grill around the same time. He is a huge help when making the sauces, volunteering to help me in the kitchen when preparing each batch”. As barbecue season heats up, Doug Carey is just enjoying the ride. “As long as I’m having fun with it, I’m going to keep doing it,” he says. Whether it’s a Saturday at the market or a backyard taste test with friends, Dougie Wuggy’s is a local flavour worth discovering — one bottle at a time.

Summer BBQ Recipes I love to BBQ—there’s something about it that always reminds me of my dad and Father’s Day. He was more of a grill master than a fan of smoking food, but he absolutely loved cooking outdoors. There was a joy in it that was uniquely his. Included is my mother’s Potato Salad, which was always one of his favourite side dishes. Here are a few recipes to get both your creativity and your meat juices flowing. Enjoy! Smoked Pork Tachos Featuring Dougie Wuggy’s Whiskey Barbecue Sauce & Pougie Wuggy Rub Ingredients 1 pork butt 2 cups tater tots 1/2 cup Dougie Wuggy’s Whiskey Barbecue Sauce Dougie Wuggy’s Pougie Wuggy Barbecue Rub Directions Smoke the pork butt until it reaches an internal temperature of 205°F. Let the pork rest for 30 minutes, then shred it. Spread tater tots on a baking sheet and season generously with Pougie Wuggy Rub. Raise the smoker temperature to 350°F and cook the tots until golden and crispy. 1 red bell pepper, chopped 2 jalapeño peppers, sliced 1/2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded 1 tomato, chopped
While the tots are cooking, chop the onion, bell pepper, and tomato. Slice the jalapeños and shred the cheese. In a cast iron skillet, layer the seasoned tater tots, vegetables, shredded pork, and cheddar cheese. Return the skillet to the smoker and heat until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Remove from smoker, top with fresh tomato, and drizzle with Whiskey Barbecue Sauce. Pro Tip: Serve straight from the skillet with a cold drink and your favourite people. BBQ Spatchcock Turkey with Maple Spice Rub by The Turkey Shoppe Ingredients 1 small turkey (5–6 kg), thawed, giblets removed 1/4 cup maple sugar 2 tbsp smoked paprika 1 1/2 tbsp salt

Once the potatoes are cooked, strain them from the water and add them to a large bowl. While the potatoes are still hot, pour the bacon fat over them. Cool and shell the eggs, then chop them and add them to the potatoes. Chop the bacon and add it to the potatoes. Once the potato mixture has cooled, add the spices and vegetables, and stir. Once mixed, add the mayonnaise and mix well. Optional: Sprinkle additional smoked paprika on top of the salad.
Place the turkey on a large surface, spine side up. Using poultry shears or a sharp knife, cut along both sides of the spine to remove it completely. You may need to make a few cuts to get through the bones. Flip the turkey over and press down firmly to flatten it. Transfer to a large baking sheet and set aside. In a bowl, mix together the maple sugar, smoked paprika, salt, oregano, parsley, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, and pepper. Drizzle the turkey with olive oil and rub it in well. Sprinkle the spice rub all over the turkey—don’t forget to get it into the crevices and under the legs. Oil the BBQ grates, then place the turkey directly on the grill. Cook for 45–60 minutes, or until the thickest part of the thigh reaches an internal temperature of 170°F (avoid touching the bone with your thermometer). If the turkey is browning too fast, cover it loosely with foil. Remove from heat and let it rest for 15–20 minutes before carving. Gloria’s Potato and Egg Salad This is a family favourite. It is not the healthiest for you, but it is a crowd-pleaser! Ingredients 3 pounds potatoes (use your favourite; Yukon Gold is a good option) 8 strips bacon 8 eggs

Readers Choose Pet Valu St. Thomas as Paws-Down Favourite Brandon and Karlee Taylor, owners of Pet Valu St. Thomas, are thrilled to be named Favourite Pet Store in this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards. “As one of the few remaining locally owned pet stores in town, we’re truly honoured to receive this recognition,” said Karlee. “It means so much to know that the community sees the value in supporting local.” The Taylors took ownership of the store in 2023, but Pet Valu has been a trusted name in the community since 1990. Brandon, who started working with Pet Valu at age 16, now manages the day-to-day operations in-store, often with their certified therapy dog, Kaiser, by his side. Karlee works behind the scenes, managing finances, marketing, and events. What sets their store apart? According to Brandon, it’s all about the people. “Our team and our customers help set our store apart. Those who come through our doors aren’t only customers they’re our friends, family, and neighbours.”
Voted #1 by the True Experts Pet Parents Like You! Thanks for naming Pet Valu your favourite pet store in St. Thomas! We’re proud to offer trusted products, expert advice, and care that pets (and their people) love. Come see why tails wag and whiskers twitch with excitement.
The team at Pet Valu St. Thomas is made up of passionate staff who bring “a wealth of knowledge, kindness, and energy to every interaction,” Karlee added. “We’re lucky to have such a dedicated group who are willing to go the extra mile.” Popular services include the self-serve dog wash, perfect after a muddy park visit or beach day, and the store’s convenient carryout and free local delivery service, including scheduled deliveries to Port Stanley and Dutton. “People are often surprised to learn about our free delivery,” said Brandon. Pet Valu St. Thomas proudly supports Canadian and locally made products, and they go beyond retail by giving back to the community. “From the start, we wanted to be more than just a place to shop,” said Karlee. “We support many community initiatives such as the St. Thomas Police and OPP K9 units, the Phoenix Canine Initiative, the Caring Cupboard, various pet rescues, youth sports, and Animal Aide.” Kaiser, their Weimaraner, has become a local favourite. In addition to visiting long-term care homes, he has achieved top prize classification in a Natural Ability test through NAVHDA. As for their proudest accomplishments, Karlee said, “Hitting our two-year milestone as owners was huge, but we’re also proud to have helped so many animals find their forever homes.” The Taylors are grateful for the community’s support. “We’d like to send a huge thank you to all our customers,” said Brandon. “We are so lucky to be part of this community.”

Railway City Cycling Club by Peri Hayes Founded by avid cyclists, Andrew Buczkowski and Derek Widash, Railway, Railway City Cycling Club was incorporated on March 24th, 2016 by a group of friends with a passion for cycling together. Ross Murray became involved with the club upon moving to this community four years ago and is presently the proud President of their Board of Directors. “The club is a group of passionate cyclists who enjoy getting out for what we call ‘social riding’ together. Our mission statement is to prioritize people enjoying a nice ride in Elgin County with opportunities to stop at a café, have time to socialize and build relationships. As well, we are part of the Ontario Cycling Association and they are our governing body for regulations.” While detailing Ross’ fulfillment with the Railway City Cycling Club, he shares, “The club certainly has grown since 2016. We are most proud of having maintained our club through COVID, and have spent the last couple of years rebuilding our membership. For me, what really excites me as a cyclist is being able to connect with a great group of friends to ride with. I really enjoy the people and this club.” As Ross encourages, “We are a very diverse club, offering a variety of pace and distance to be able to meet everybody’s current riding comfortability. We currently have four rides a week.” Their rides are held on Monday evenings, Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings, with their largest attendance being on Saturday mornings. Weather pending, their season typically commences toward the end of April and completes at the end of September. Their Annual General Meeting is scheduled for the 1st of November. The Railway City Cycling Club season commences with their Spring Social in March, thereafter entailing their routine rides and special occasions -- one of which takes place every July 1st as their ‘Summertime Get Together’. “Every one of our rides is led by a Ride Host, being the appreciated club members that volunteer.” Ross offers the following invitation: “For anyone that is new to cycling, we host a ‘Try a Ride’ in May. Bring your helmet and a bike in good working order to experience riding in a group. Not only is this exercise, this club is about having fun and meeting people. We welcome those interested in coming out, and are glad to have new residents to the community who have joined as members.” Visit the railwaycitycc.com website to register if over 18 years of age, and direct inquiries about Railway City Cycling Club via email to info@railwaycitycc.com.

Canadale Nurseries for 70 Years and Counting! by Peri Hayes Siblings, Tom Intven and Pauline Intven-Casier, speak on the history of Canadale Nurseries. Tom is their President and Nursery Manager, with Pauline holding the role of Vice President and Garden Centre Manager. Rooted in family, Tom and Pauline’s nursery and garden centre has been cultivating a connective sense of community while building their legacy which began with their parents, Bill and Joan, pursuing their deep love of horticulture upon immigrating from Holland. As Tom and Pauline express, “Our goal has always been to offer the widest selection of healthy, high-quality plants in Canada -- at prices that are fair and accessible. Whether you’re a backyard gardener or a large-scale landscaper, we’re committed to helping you grow something beautiful.” “One of the greatest blessings on this journey has been our incredible team. We’ve been fortunate to attract and keep key staff who are not just talented and dedicated, but who truly care about our customers and our company. They are the heartbeat of our operation, and we wouldn’t be where we are without them.” Presently, there are 80 people employed at this establishment -- with a variety of seasonal, part-time and student employees hired every year. Appreciated and long-time team members of Canadale Nurseries share their reasons for enjoying working in this space:
Rick Graham, Assistant Nursery Manager, states, “Canadale has been great to me over the years. Every time I have needed them, they have been there for me. That’s what a family does. I have made life-long friends and relationships that I cherish. I am very grateful.” Kate Holt, Garden Centre Supervisor and third generation of the Intven family, offers, “I’ve had the chance to grow alongside passionate people who feel like family, all while contributing to a long-standing tradition of excellence rooted in community and care. Canadale truly feels like a second home where every season brings new memories.”
